Watercolour on paper painting by A. Cardinal, Dimensions : Frame : 330mm x 280mm x 23mm. Image : 176mm x 122mm. Weight : 0.940kg net. Condition : Quite good.
Watercolour painting on paper, framed and glazed, signed by the artist A. Cardinal, c1890, entitled Rotterdam. The painting depicts a harbour scene in Rotterdam with boats and figures. The painting is signed at bottom lh corner. The painting is quite detailed in light watercolour tints. There are a few very light foxing spots in the sky but not noticeable in normal viewing. The painting is displayed beneath a golden mount board and the title Rotterdam is printed below with the artist's name printed as "A. Cardinal". The signature looks like A. Tardinal but this is confirmed to be Cardinal a quite well known Continental artist. The gilt frame is solid but with wear to the edges and some small sections of decoration missing which have been re-touched with gold paint. The back of the wooden frame is protected with a wooden board which appears to be the original, matching the frame, and the whole is covered by an old sheet of backing paper gummed to the frame. The board is held in place by old headless pins. There is handscript in the centre stating "January 1919 £5.0 (crossed out) £5.50 pair" and beneath very faint dark ink stamp which appears to state "...........Rotterdam......." probably the framer's stamp. Eye-hooks and old cord attached. An interesting 19th century watercolour by this known artist. Shipping Bands : UK : J. Euro/World : FIXED RATE 3/BAND M.
