Pictorial red linen front board with polar bear eating seal and hunters approaching. Front board is good with light wear to edges and light bumps to corners, light marking to face. Back board plain red linen with light wear to edges , bumps to corners and some marking to face. Spine decorated gilt and red, slightly faded, with wear to top and tail. Front decorated pattern paste-down with partly detached presentation certificate from Christ Church .........on-on-Trent Prize Awarded to ...Class Prize for the Half......October 1912 W.S. Oakden President. fpp follows with title and J £3 in pencil top rh corner. Frontisplate follows in full colour "Charles 1 on his way to the scaffold" with protective tissue. Decorated full colour Title Page follows with full details then Ttile Page with details of contents including "Illustrated with numerous wood engravings and frontispiece and title in colours".Most pages have black and white wood cut engravings. 320 numbered pages 8vo light gloss. The pages are generally clean and undamaged with exception of p289 which has crease at the top rh corner and some light usage marks. Light toning to border edges. Binding quite tight and fully intact. Split in surface gutter between back board paste-down and back e/p 140mm up from the bottom. A very interesting historical volume and in good general condition.
