The watercolour painting accurately depicts the Christian Salvesen cargo ship ss Saluta entering Leith Harbour in South Georgia. This ship regularly brought crews from the U.K. and Norway to South Georgia for the whaling season.
Condition : The watercolour on card painting is in very good condition and the colours are strong. There are no signs of foxing or moisture. The artist's signature printed in white G.R. Cummings Edinburgh is in the lower lh corner. The title "Saluta" Leith Harbour So. Georgia is printed in white in the lower rh corner. The painting is presented below a white mount board which is in good condition. There is slight toning to the cut edge of the mount window. The gilt wooden frame is in quite good condition but with a chip to 25mm above the lower rh corner and a small chip to the lh corner. The back of the frame is covered with a board and sealed with 35mm self-adhesive framing tape. At the top of the board is a label which states "Saluta Chr. Salvesen & Co Leith Edinburgh G.R. Cummings 1987". This painting offers an unusual depiction of a listed steam ship in a rarely seen region of the world.
