Dimensions : Frame : 685mm x 492mm x 28mm. Image : 590mm x 392mm.
Condition/Notes : The oil painting on canvas depicts a tranquil Afghan village scene with two figures and a donkey with the mountains in the background. The colours are vibrant and quite fresh. The painting and canvas generally are in good condition with the exception of a horizontal 10mm tear in the canvas in the upper cloud above the mountains and to the rh side of the vegetation on the roof of the building. This tear is not noticeable in normal viewing and does not detract from the painting. The artist's signature, Qurban Ali, is printed in red English script and Arabic script in the lower rh corner. The canvas is quite taut. Qurban Ali is a known listed Afghan artist active in the mid 20th Century and this painting is estimated to be c1950 based on other known works. The frame is original stained wood and in good condition. The back of the frame is plain wood with the basic wooden stretcher nailed to the frame and canvas pinned to the stretcher. There is pencil Arabic script on the upper lh corner of the frame and some script on the lh side of the stretcher. Also some Arabic script on the lh upper corner of the canvas and "650 Afs" written in pencil top rh corner. See the images below. A hanging hook is attached at the top of the frame with a cord. Overall, this is a very interesting work by a known Afghan artist at a time when such works are starting to appear on the market.
