Condition/Notes : The oil painting on canvas depicts an African rural scene with a farmer taking his bullock to the field and animals grazing in the scrub. The painting is in naive style which captures the verdant nature of the region surrounding a lake and a sense of motion in the scene. The village house and tree draw the viewer from the bullock towards the tranquil lake in the background. The painting is signed and dated by the artist in the lower lh corner. The colours of the painting are vibrant and fresh and there is a sheen from the light varnish cover. There are several areas where the painting has been scratched, in particular below the farmer and bullock, to the rh side of the bullock parallel to the rh frame edge and a 20mm x 10mm mark below the house. Also a few smaller marks in the sky. The canvas is fairly loose and may require adjustment if desired. The frame appears to be original and is in good sound condition although there is scratching to the decorative marbled gilt edges. The back of the frame is plain wood with the stretcher nailed in position. The canvas is in good condition and tacked to the stretcher. "Reeves Cotton Canvas" is printed along the lower edge of the canvas. Hooks and cord are attached.
