Dimensions : Frame : 624mm x 474mm x 21mm. Image : 506mm x 355mm.
Condition/Notes : The watercolour painting is in very good condition with strong colour and no foxing or moisture ingress. The painting depicts a street scene with a donkey cart and two figures and a female figure walking behind. The scene is set in one of Malta's oldest towns known as Casal Gharghur and also recorded as the highest town above sea-level. The artist's signature is in the lower rh corner in his usual manner with Malta 1970 printed below. The scene is typical of Malta but somewhat unusual for this artist as he more commonly paints maritime scenes. It is also a larger than usual commission for this artist. The title is written in pencil in the artist's hand on the mount below the lh corner of the painting. The dark stone mount board is in good condition except for a 55mm x 10mm max stain on the rh side at 155mm up from the lower rh corner (probably caused by seepage from the gummed framing tape on the back of the frame. The wooden frame is sturdy and heavy and original with scuffing in places. Glazing clear. The back of the frame is covered with a stained wooden board secured by nails and sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. Screw-eyes and cord attached. An interesting painting by this well known Maltese artist. Please view the images below :
