Fujiyama, village scene, watercolour on paper, signed by M. Matsu, c1930.
Dimensions : Frame : 360mm x 275mm x 18mm. Image : 315mm x 230mm.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour painting depicts a small village scene with horse and cart and a solitary figure with iconic Mount Fujiyama dominating the scene. The stylized classical Japanese Maple tree contrasts starkly with the frozen peak of Fujiyama. The painting is typical of this known Japanese artist. He was active during the 1930's and is recognised as a pre-WWII artist; known for his night scenes. The tone of the painting is also typical of his work as the subdued blue colour features in many of his works.
There are a few foxing marks across the centre of the painting but otherwise the painting is in good condition. The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner. The original frame is in quite good condition with a few marks and scratches to the edges. The back of the frame is covered with a cardboard sheet fixed by old panel pins and sealed with 40mm gummed tape. "By Matsu - artist signed" is written in handscript at the top and the framer's label - Mr T.W. Radley, Wolverhampton - is attached to the lower edge. Hooks and cord attached. Overall, an interesting work of the pre-war Japanese School. Please view the images below :
