Cairo Street Scene, watercolour on paper, signed T. Baldasar, c1900. Framed and glazed.
Dimensions : Frame : 282mm x 181mm x 12mm. Image : 222mm x 130mm.
Condition/Notes : The watercolour painting on textured art paper is in good condition with quite good colour. There is a light surface crease to the paper base 20mm long from the lower edge at 54mm in from the lower rh corner which can be seen in the image below. This is not particularly noticeable in normal viewing. The painting depicts a Cairo street scene with figures outside a mosque. This painting can be linked to several other similar studies of Cairo scenes which have appeared on the market over recent years (A set of four Cairo street scenes, watercolour over pencil, signed T. Baldasar, Bonhams New Bond Street, 17 Dec 2008, estimated £1000 - 1500). There is Arabic script on the rh building and over the doorway across the street. The painting appears to have been pasted to a gilt mount which was a typical method of presentation in the early 20th Century. The artist's signature, in his usual manner, is in the lower lh corner. The painting is framed and glazed. The gilt wooden frame is in good sturdy condition with light wear. The back of the frame appears to be undisturbed with a cardboard backing board secured by rusty panel pins and covered with black backing paper pasted to the board. Screw-eyes, rings and string attached. No visible script. Overall, the painting is an interesting work which will benefit from reframing with a conservation mount (or just adding a conservation mount to the existing frame and resealing).
