North African Oasis, with camels and figures, watercolour on paper, signed John W. Hepple 1915.
Dimensions : Frame : 422mm x 332mm x 17mm. Image : 242mm x 174mm.
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour painting depicts a North African Oasis with ruins in the background and figures and camels. The painting is in good condition with good colour. There are a few very light foxing spots in the sky but no sign of moisture or damage. The scene is typical of the period reflecting the immense interest in Orientalist art and Arabian themes. The painting is signed by this well known artist in his usual manner in the lower rh corner and dated 1915. The painting is displayed within a cream coloured mount which has foxing spots in places. The wooden frame is sturdy with wear to the edges and a 9mm wide chip near the lower rh corner. The back of the frame is closed with a sheet of cardboard secured by panel pins and sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. John Wilson Hepple (1886-1939) is written in pencil handscript along the top edge of the backing board. Screw-eyes and cord attached. An interesting and attractive work by this well known artist.
