The Eland Hunt, South African ethnic art, acrylic on board, indistinctly signed. c1980.
Dimensions : Frame : 617mm x 617mm x 22mm. Image : 565mm x 565mm.
Condition/Notes : Good. The acrylic on board painting entitled The Eland Hunt, depicts a traditional South African tribal game hunt of the plains' species known as the Eland. The painting is executed in the style of the indigenous people and is commonly known as Rock or Cave Art and can be found in many countries in addition to South Africa. The painting is naive and yet it captures the excitement and motion of the frenzied chase of the panic-stricken animals by the naked hunters. In the style of Rock Art the whole scene is shrouded in clouds of dust which refract the sun's rays and create blocks and screens of varying colours which seem to slice up the vision into sections. The painting is signed indistinctly in the lower lh corner. The painting is generally in good condition but there is a small 5mm long surface abrasion to the left of the upper Eland's hind leg which shows as a white mark but this does not detract from the work and could quite easily be painted-in if desired. The rustic style wooden frame is in quite good condition but with a few surface chips in places. The frame is closed with a sheet of synthetic board secured by points and sealed with 50mm self-adhesive framing tape. The framer's label is attached with the title "The Eland Hunt Acrylic" hand-written in Biro and with the Art Gallery's address and contact details in Plettenberg Bay South Africa. Rings and cord attached. An interesting and unusual work. Please view the images below :
