Condition/Notes : The volume is in quite good condition. The dark burgundy morocco front board has wear to edges, wear and bumps to corners, wear and rubbing to the face. The board has gilt decorated outer and blind stamped inner decoration. Back board is similar condition. The spine has wear top and tail, wear to edges with surface split rh edge to front board and lh edge wear but fully intact to back board. Front board slightly loose but not detached with paste-down/front e/p fully intact. Gilt decorated ribs and gilt lettering. Front paste-down and e/p marbled. Split between e/p and pp but intact. pp has handwritten ink presentation script to an old workman in his father's employ dated Oct 27th 1882. Title page follows (see image below) with full details; verso blank with creasing and some foxing. Dedication follows to Prince of Wales from G.F. Raymond with similar creasing and some light foxing. Book I commences on p5. According to the Instructions to the Binder, a Map of Great Britain should be facing p5 but this is missing and there is no sign of it having been detached so it could be this was omitted by the Binder. The pages are generally good and clean with light usage marks but there are a few pages with small tears and some tape repair. The engraved plates are good. There is light foxing throughout the volume. Toning and dusting to the page borders. The binding is quite tight. Similar (to front board) internal surface split between back e/p and preceding pp but fully intact and not loose. Mottled edges. Overall, a fascinating and rare First Edition of this historical work.
