Condition/Notes : Algeciras, the oil on canvas impasto study of an hotel in Algeciras, Andalucia, Spain, is in good condition with good colour and no damage or paint loss. The painting has been dated by the previous owner who stayed at the hotel depicted and actually watched the artist completing the work in 1970. Unfortunately, he cannot remember the name of the artist and the work appears to be unsigned unless the script is a signature rather than a title. The script in the lower rh corner appears to be Aljicrs which can be taken as the title of the work which was in the city of Algeciras and could be a colloquial spelling based on the original name Al-Jazira Al-Khadra. The painting depicts the entrance to the courtyard with the traditional flowered balconies overlooking and telegraph wires on the pole catching the eyes of the viewer. The impresssionistic study is typical of the 1960's Continental Style art created for the nascent tourist market now re-emerging as memorabilia of a long lost era and becoming quite collectible. The work is housed in a white wooden frame which is in good condition. The basic wooden stretcher is nailed to the frame and the canvas stapled to the edges. Tension is good and no signs of wear to the canvas. Cord attached ready to hang. No script or marking verso. Overall, an interesting painting. Please view the images below :
