Condition/Notes : Quite good. The marbled front board has wear to edges and face and some scratching. Corners reinforced with 95mm x 95mm calf which is worn to the board on edges. 70mm wide calf border lh edge to spine which is rubbed and worn at the edges with marking to face. Back board very similar with similar wear. The calf spine with five ribs has wear and rubbing top and tail, 15mm split from top rh edge down spine and 25mm split from top lh edge down spine. This is calf outer only and does not affect binding. Wear and rubbing full length both edges. Gilt title and "Illustrated" with decorations to ribs. Pale lemon paste-down and front e/p, both blank with usage marks. Some movement to front board but calf intact. Front e/p verso blank off-white with "Bound by Hering 9 Newman St" top lh corner; pp's blank; verso 2nd with full page engraved drawing. Facing title page with full details as listed in above description. Dated 1844 (M.DCCC.XL.IV). Verso printer's details. Frontispiece follows with full page engraved drawing by H.C. Selous del and Henry Moses. Sc. Memoir of the author commences with woodcut illustration, (Each page is divided into two sections and numbered individually i.e. number i and ii comprises page 1 but no page numbers) and memoir numbered i-xvi including a fac-simile of Bunyan's signature taken from his will. Biographical Notice follows numbers xvii-xxviii with six woodcuts. Author's apology for this book follows. Full page engraved outline drawing follows titled Christian Meditates his Departure, numbered 1, followed by two more full page drawings, numbered 2 and 3. The Pilgrim's Progress commences with first page containing the two sections numbered 3 and 4 (3 not written on first half) and so continues in this manner with the next drawing nr 4, through to the last page section number 90. The drawings are more complex in numbering as sub-number II follows 4 through to sub-number V, then nr 5, followed by VI to IX, then nr 6 - 9, then X, then nr 10, then XI, then nr 11-12, then XII, then nr 13-14, then XIII, then nr 15, then XIV, then nr 16-17, then XV -XVII, then nr 18, then XVIII, then nr 19, then XIX, then nr 20-21, then XX and final nr 22 Christian and Hopeful ascend into the Celestial City. pp blank and back e/p blank verso pale lemon facing same paste-down. Pages generally good with light toning to edges and some spots in places. Binding quite tight and fully intact as per numbering system. Edges gilt.
