Condition/Notes : The oil on canvas painting is in good condition with good colour and no damage. The painting depicts two figures, one playing a string instrument and another clapping in accompaniment and looking towards another figure in the upper rh quarter. The painting imparts a sense of rhythm and the colours reflect the heat of an African evening in an Impressionistic style. This work is an early example of the Anglo-African school which was starting to venture into the tribal areas and study the local culture rather than traditional landscapes. The painting is signed by Kitty Burns, a well known artist, and dated 51 (1951) and probably originates from Kenya or the erstwhile Tanganyika. The artist's signature and date are in the lower rh corner. There are some splashes of white paint in the region of the signature. The painting is displayed in the original heavy plain gilt wooden frame which is sturdy and has some chips and scratching to the edges and a 50mm long surface abrasion revealing the wooden frame below. The frame is backed with a sheet of hardboard nailed in position and sealed with 50mm gummed tape. The retailer's label is attached which states "Vaju-Raj P.O. Box 1418 Phone 2367 Dar-es-Salaam". There is a large water-stain across the backing board. Hanging wire attached. An interesting period study of Anglo-African Art.
