Condition/Notes : The watercolour and gouache study depicts a lone traveller with camel in the desert within sight of a town. The scene is set in the evening as the sky begins to darken and the heat of the day has passed. There is a sense of isolation and solitude in the study but the proximity of the town offers relief. The figure is carrying a rifle and the camel appears distracted. An interesting study open to various interpretations. The artist's signature, in his usual manner, is in the lower rh corner. The painting is in good condition with subdued colour, no sign of damage or foxing and displayed within a traditional gilt mount which is also in good condition. The original stained wooden frame is in quite good condition with some scuffing and scratching to the edges. The wooden backing board is secured with nails and sealed with old 65mm framing tape. The framer's label is attached to the upper centre which states "T.H. Matthews, Carver, Gilder & Fine Art Dealer, 268, Stretford Road and 152, Lower Moss Lane. Restoring and Re-Gilding a Speciality". Screw-eyes and cord attached. An interesting and attractive Orientalist study benefiting from the signature of this known 19th Century British artist.
