South Bay, Scarborough, watercolour on paper with gouache highlights, signed Austin Smith 1921. Framed and glazed.
Dimensions : Frame : 267mm x 329mm x 19mm. Image : 125mm x 173mm. Weight : 0.620kg net.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour with gouache highlights is in quite good condition depicting the headland at South Bay Scarborough with boats and buildings and an overcast sky with the sun breaking through the clouds. There are gulls flying amid the breakers. The sparsely developed quayside can be compared to the present day location. There is very light foxing to the sky in places and no marking or moisture. The painting is signed in the artist's usual manner in the lower lh corner and dated 1921. The painting is displayed in an original period gilt mount and gilt decorated frame. There is a very light mark to the mid lh side of the mount but otherwise it is in good condition. The frame is good with a few small losses to the decoration in places and is closed with a wooden backing board secured by pins and sealed with Boots Framers' dark green gummed tape. An old handwritten label is attached with Title W/C Austin Smith "Sc........remainder torn off. Below is a Boots Framing label which is also mostly missing. The frame is original and has not been disturbed. Rings and cord attached. An interesting study of Scarborough by this well known artist. Please view the images below :
