Dimensions : Frame : 302mm X 350mm x 16mm. Image : 127mm x 175mm. Weight : 0.820kg net.
Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache on paper painting titled On the Shore at Whitby 1909 is in good condition with good colour and no foxing or damage. The study depicts the shoreline described as Whitby with several weed strewn rocks in the foreground, which are characteristic of the area, and breaking waves ahead of an inshore wind. The dark clouds are heavy and ominous and the distant coastline is obscured by the low-lying cloud. The line of the horizon is broken by a distant sailing boat and the viewer's attention is drawn towards this distant point. The painting is signed H Moxon Cook in light brown paint in the lower lh corner. This well-known listed artist is recorded as exhibiting between 1881 and 1926 in many galleries and was known to have lived in Manchester, Isle of Arran, London, Liverpool and Kenilworth; his works are mostly landscapes and coastal scenes. The painting is displayed within a multi-lined cream coloured mount in a narrow-edged gilt moulded frame with decorated corners; the edges are chipped in places and there is general usage wear. The wooden backing board has the title written in pencil handscript in centre and an old framer's label attached below which reads "C. Dingley 75, Golders Green Road, N.W.11. Makers of Picture Frames ..etc (see the images below for details). The backing board was previously removed for examination and revealed the painting attached to the mount by framing tape and the following pencil handscript verso : "12.9 On the Shore at Whitby 13-1/4 11-1/2 65993 H Moxon Cook 1909 (and framer's notes) 1/4 gilt beading & white mount all round. Please Copy Title on Back 10/6" , confirming that this is the original frame. Although the frame has general wear and some minor damage, it is secure and does suit the painting. A future a buyer may wish to upgrade the frame and mount. An interesting work by this well known artist. Please view the images below :
