Lynmouth, North Devon, watercolour on paper, signed W. Sands (Thomas H. Victor). C1930. Framed and glazed.
Dimensions : Frame : 227mm x 342mm x 16mm. Image : 120mm x 245mm. Weight : 0.560kg net.
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper study of Lynmouth Harbour is in good condition with good colour. There is a slight toning to the lower edge below the signature and along the mount edge to the lh side and along the upper mount edge in the sky but this does not affect the painting and could be described as complementing the work. This effect is due to the slight acidity of the old mount board and can be expected in framings of this period. The mount can easily be replaced with a conservation standard mount which will protect the painting for the future although the current situation is quite stable. The scene captures the simple beauty of the old harbour and can be described as an historical work which is typical of Thomas Victor's studies and can only appreciate in value in future. The painting is signed in his usual manner in the lower rh corner. The pale grey mount board, as mentioned above, is original and faintly lined with toning to the window's edge and light staining to the lower lh corner. The speckled cream coloured frame is in good condition with light wear; verso closed with card backing board sealed with gummed brown paper and framing tape. The retailer's stamp is in the lower rh corner "Gunn's for Gifts (Proprietor, Russell Roberts ) Lynton, Devon" which is a well known local Art Gallery and Supplier established in the Victorian period. The edges of the backing paper have torn with age. Screw-eyes and cord attached. An interesting and very attractive watercolour study of Lynmouth. Please view the images below :
