Smyrona (Smyrna, Izmir) Turkey, Assignation, watercolour on paper, after Blake (William Blake, hence Sir William Blake Richmond, 1842-1921). Unsigned 19th C Continental School, dated verso 1873. Framed and glazed.
Dimensions : Frame : 300mm x 360mm x 16mm. Image : 165mm x 225mm. Weight : 0.970kg net.
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no damage or moisture. The painting depicts an assignation between a veiled woman standing next to a seated man outside a building on the slopes of Mount Yamanlar with the city of Smyrona below and the characteristic rolling hills across the Gulf of Izmir. The painting is titled "Smyrona (Turkey) after Blake 1873" verso and appears to be in the style of Sir William Blake Richmond's Orientalist studies in this region. The work is displayed within a double lined white mount which is in quite good condition with toning to the window edges; there are some thunderflies scattered around the mount but these can be easily removed on opening the frame. The decorated gilt frame is in good condition with light wear; MDF backing board is secured by framing tape. A glossy white label is attached to lower edge with title "Smyrona (Turkey) after Blake 1873". On the upper edge is written in ink 1873 Smyra Izmir. Screw-eyes and wire attached. An interesting and historical Orientalist study which merits further research.
