Condition/Notes : Very good. The watercolour on paper study of a group of washerwomen on the banks of Lake Como is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or moisture. The painting is a particularly interesting study with some interesting features, notably the inscription and date - Sarah 1834 - on the base structure of the central turret-like building and the unusual vessel crossing the lake. The central sitting female figure may well be the Sarah in question but her relationship is a subject for further research. It is well known that William Henry spent several weeks every year on the Continent sketching and drawing and many of his works are in this region. The structure is very detailed and typical of the artist's architectural studies. The painting is signed W.H. Harriot in the lower rh corner, dated 1834 below the signature and displayed within an off-white mount which has the artist's name below the window and erroneously states fl.1811-1846 (should be 1811-1839, his year of death). The mount is in good condition with medium toning to the window cut edge. The plain gilt frame is in good condition with light usage and scuffing; verso hardboard backing sealed with gummed tape. No visible script. Screw-eyes and wire attached.
