Soir, Quiberon, Bretagne (Evening in Quiberon Brittany), gouache on wooden panel, signed G. - P. Guinegault (Georges Pierre Guinegault 1893-1961), 1923.
Dimensions : Frame : 360mm x 267mm x 18mm. Image : 320mm x 228mm. Weight : 0.280kg net.
Condition/Notes : Good. The impasto gouache on wooden panel painting is in good/very good condition with good colour and no damage or paint loss. The Impressionist study depicts fishing boats off the Brittany coast near Quiberon in the evening capturing the fading light and shadows in the sea; the accompanying gulls add a sense of motion to the study and draw the eye from the darkening sky. The work is typical of this artist's maritime studies and is signed in his usual manner (G. - P. Guinegault) and dated (19) 23 in the lower rh corner. The original gilt wooden frame is in good condition with light/medium usage/wear and complements the painting. The wooden panel is secured by six nails. The title Soir (Quiberon) 1923 G. - P. Guinegault is written in handscript on the upper quarter of the panel with 200 below. The Gallery's stamp is in the upper lh corner which reads "Lucien Lefebvre-Foinet, 19, Rue Vavin & 2, Rue Brea - Paris" (the long established art supplies company) which indicates this work was probably acquired directly from the artist as payment for goods (which was the practice of the establishment). An interesting work of this well-known artist benefitting from the signature and date and provenance.
