Condition/Notes : Fair/Quite good. The watercolour on paper study of a lakeside scene with grazing and resting cattle is in fair condition with overall colour fading, some light browning and some foxing in places. There are two vertical light bands of browning in the sky to the right of centre and to the right of the large tree. These are more pronounced in the images than in the actual painting and when viewed, depending on the angle of light, do not detract from the image or distract the attention of the viewer. In a wall hanging situation they are not particularly noticeable. The white gouache highlights on the cattle and the lake focus the attention of the viewer and this is the primary interest in this study. The scene is typical of the work of Henry Earp and is located in the Scottish Highlands which were a favourite study of this artist. The painting is signed in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual manner of H. Earp Senr. The painting is displayed within the original quadruple, lined, mount set-up which is in good structural condition but with toning and foxing. The recessed, gilt, red lined frame is in good sturdy condition with light wear to edges and some small chips to corners. Wooden backing board is sealed with sheet of kraft paper. Screw-eyes and cord attached. A good example of the work of this well-known prolific artist.
