Condition/Notes : Good/Very good. The watercolour and gouache on paper study titled Tunis is in good condition with good strong colour and no damage or marking. The paper base has been pasted to a board as was the practice. The scene depicts an outdoor souk in Tunis with figures buying and selling. The painting is titled Tunis which is lightly written in the artist's characteristic handscript (seen in other examples of his work) in the lower rh corner. To the right of the title is an area with what appears to be very faint script with an underline and a letter K and other very faint possible letters - examples of the artist's signature are always underlined or overlined from an extended letter T (Talbot) or Y (in Kelly) thus indicating this artist. The painting is displayed within a wash-line mount which is in good condition and complements the colours of the study. The gilt frame is sturdy and in quite good condition although there is a small gap to the top rh mitre joint; hardboard backing secured by arrow points. Handscript to centre "Tunis by Robert Talbot Kelly, R.I., R.B.A., R.B.C. (1861-1934) Exhibited at Royal Academy, Royal Institute, Royal Society of British Artists etc. etc.". Rings and wire attached above.
This work is typical of the Orientalist studies for which he is well known and several other works include very similarly depicted buildings .
