Continental Town Scene, acrylic on art paper, laid to glass. Unsigned. c1980.

Condition/Notes : Good. The acrylic on art paper impasto study of a Continental Town is in good condition with vibrant colour. The work is unsigned and has been laid "face-to" on glass. The painting has detached from the glass in places and could be peeled away if desired. There is a small surface chip to the glass on the top edge at 105mm in from the top rh corner but it is not noticeable in normal viewing. The impressionist scene captures the heat of the day with a few figures in places but the colours of the composition are the most striking aspect and are guaranteed to brighten up any vacant wall space.

An interesting painting but unfortunately unattributed.

Dimensions : Canvas : approx. 580mm x 650mm. Weight : 0.150kg net.

Condition/Notes : Good. The acrylic on loose canvas study of men hunting in the Red Centre is in good condition with good vibrant colour and no losses. Fraying to canvas edges and numerous pin holes to lh edge only. Vertical creasing to canvas which will be resolved on stretcher when framed. Signed in lower rh corner in the artist's usual style. The work is typical of this well-known aboriginal artist from the Yankuntjara tribe of NW South Australia based in Alice Springs. His works are popular among collectors of Australian Ethnic Art.

Condition : Good; frame in need of maintenance.

Condition/Notes : Acrylic on antique board signed N. Dowse. Inscribed verso, signed Norman Dowse and dated 1990. As inscribed verso, the work was created by the artist in honour of his mentor Francis Woolley (see the complete inscription in images above) and dated 1990 verso. The painting is headed by an image of St. Francis of Assisi and humourised by the depiction of mischievous choirboys in remembrance of the artist's own service in the church choir in Newark. 

The work is an interesting study and appears to have been executed on an antique previously used board which has the original framer's label attached centre which states "George Reed Artistic Overmantel & Picture Frame Manufacturer, Overmantel Factory, Newark, Notts.", followed by descriptive inscription by the artist (see images above). Board nailed to frame, cord attached. The frame is in sound condition but requires maintenance of the gilding which is peeling in places. 

The artist, Norman Dowse, is a known ecclesiastical artist, recorded as having painted title board "Lord Charles Cavendish Bentinck" for Oxton church, similar works for York Minster and other works.

Passing Storm with Inshore Fishing Boat Silver Harvest IH311 drawn up on Aldeburgh Beach Suffolk, acrylic on board signed Gordon Higgs, June 2010. Mounted.

Condition/Notes : Very good. The acrylic on board painting is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The painting depicts the inshore fishing boat Siver Harvest, registration code IH311, drawn up on the shingle beach at Aldeburgh during a passing storm. Signed Gordon Higgs in the lower rh corner. In conversation with the artist Gordon Higgs, he stated that the painting was created on site in June 2010 during a visit to Suffolk.

The shingle beach in the foreground is effectively portrayed and even has the rough sharp texture and feel of real shingle. The darkening sky captures the approaching storm and imparts an overall sense of vulnerability to the beach and the isolated, seemingly flimsy, fishing boat. Overall, an effective atmospheric composition which captures the frequently occuring squally conditions of this region of England. 

The painting is displayed within a cream and white combination of mount boards which are in good condition. 

Ready to be framed.
