Fishermen Returning to Whitby, watercolour on paper, signed A. Smith (possibly Austin Smith, 19th/20th Century English School), c1920 (much earlier if not Austin Smith). Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour on paper painting depicts several fishing boats returning to Whitby Harbour ahead of an approaching storm and the focus of attention is the nearest boat which is fighting against the prevailing wind attempting to enter the protection of the harbour. St. Mary's church atop the East Cliff stands out against the evening sky and the Abbey can be seen behind the church. The extent of the erosion of the cliff face can be seen in this painting when comparing it to a contemporary photograph of the same view. The painting is typical of the work of this well-known artist who painted many such scenes around Whitby and Scarborough and is renowned for his maritime studies, although this attribution is not certain. There are indications that another artist known as A.Smith was active in the mid 1800's. Any further information regarding this will be added in due course. (Any information regarding this artist is welcome). The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner. The painting is displayed within a gilt mount, typical of the period, which is in good condition. The heavy decorated gilt wooden frame is also in good condition with light wear to the edges; verso closed with a cardboard sheet nailed in place and sealed with 38mm self-adhesive tape. Framer's label attached to lower edge and a title label "Fishermen returning Whitby" attached lower lh corner. Hanging cord attached.

Fishing Boat entering Old Zeebrugge Harbour (Old Mole) with people fishing from the wall, c1906.

The watercolour study is in good condition with good colours and highlights in gouache. The sea is choppy and the sky overcast with rain clouds and other boats can be seen towards the shoreline. People can be seen fishing from the harbour entrance wall. It is an atmospheric scene capturing the stark conditions of the North Sea on a typical Autumnal day

The painting is signed H. Arden in the lower lh corner in paint in the artist's usual style.

The painting is displayed within a smaller wooden frame with an incorporated gilt slip. This inner frame is secured to the main heavy wooden gilt painted, glazed, frame by nails and four modern arrow points. The frame is deeply recessed and painted with gilt paint. Both are in good sturdy condition with some small scuffs and dints in places to the main frame. Three sections of separate wooden sheets form the backing board and are secured by nails. Label attached to upper backing board with handscript "Henri Arden Born Antwerp Belgium 1859-1917" (This birth-date differs from the commonly accepted year of birth 1858). Also a small printed reference label attached to the upper lh corner of main frame "C11293S2/1/0 Late 19th/20th Century Coastal Scene).

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper seascape is in quite good condition with quite good colour, no damage, but areas of foxing and surface dusting particularly around the two fishing boats. A simple but pleasing study signed by the artist in the lower rh corner.  The painting is displayed within the original period gilt mount, which is in good condition, and housed in the original period wooden frame which is in quite good condition with light scuffing to edges. Fujiyama, Fujisan, village scene, watercolour on paper, signed by M. Matsu, c1930.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour painting depicts a small village scene with horse and cart and a solitary figure with iconic Mount Fujiyama dominating the scene. The stylized classical Japanese Maple tree contrasts starkly with the frozen peak of Fujiyama Fujisan. The painting is typical of this known Japanese artist. He was active during the 1930's and is recognised as a pre-WWII artist; known for his night scenes. The tone of the painting is also typical of his work as the subdued blue colour features in many of his works.

There are a few foxing marks across the centre of the painting but otherwise the painting is in good condition. The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner. The original frame is in quite good condition with a few marks and scratches to the edges. Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper study of terracotta pot with a geranium plant on the doorstep is in good condition with good colour and no damage. The scene is interesting with the geranium capturing the attention and the doorway further up the street drawing the viewer into the study. The Spanish street scene imparts the heat and solitude of the midday. Signed in the lower rh corner in pale blue ink Doris Petter.

It is thought that this is the work of the British artist Madeleine Petter 1924-2014 signing in the alternative Doris Petter.

The painting is displayed within a dark mushroom coloured mount which is in good condition. Contemporary cream coloured frame with gilt inner decoration; currently unglazed due to apparent previous breakage. Card backing board secured by metal points which have been previously removed to access the broken glazing and temporarily refitted. Hanging wire attached. Previous examination of the painting base revealed the date 1975 in handscript verso.

An attractive and interesting genre 20th Century work.

The colours are very good and strong and there is no damage or moisture to the base. The painting is signed Michael Crawley in the lower rh corner in the usual manner of this prolific British artist. Several of his Maltese studies are on the market at this time and offer an interesting alternative to his more common English landscapes. The work is displayed within a khaki and charcoal double-mount presentation which complements the painting and is also in good condition. The heavy gilt wooden frame is sturdy and appropriate for the work with light scuffing to the gilt surface. The backing board is sealed with 38mm framing tape. H.H. Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Bahadur, Asaf Jah VI, Nizam VI of Hyderabad, watercolour and gouache on photographic ground.

19thC Indian School, c1890. Mixed media.

Original ebonized frame displayed within glazed oak frame.

Condition/Notes : Good. The full figure watercolour and gouache portrait of the Nizam VI of Hyderabad is in good condition. The colours to the figure are good and the scenic background is quite good with some fading and toning to the vegetation and the distant mosque. Very attractive and interesting scenic background executed in the traditional Indian style; Nizam's dress in fine detail.

The figure of the Nizam appears to float before the landscape which is typical of this period style of depiction. Particularly interesting is the remaining shadow of the Nizam's long flowing sideburns and hair in the original photograph which has been removed in this painted version reflecting his actual later real-life change to a somewhat shorter hair style. He reigned for 42 years until his death in 1911.

The painting is displayed within the original ebonized frame which is displayed within a larger glazed oak frame with carved beading surround; sturdy condition with scuffing and scratching in  places. The inner frame has wooden backing board secured by arrow points sealed with old tape and nailed to the outer oak frame. Old screw-eyes and cord attached. No visible script.

A very interesting and historical Anglo-Indian painting.

HMS Hesperus H57 and HMS Prince of Wales in coastal scene with barrage balloons 1941, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed John R. Dominy 1966. Framed.

The watercolour with gouache highlights study is in good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. The active scene is quite complex with several ships and a nearby coastline with barrage balloons at intervals against an overcast sky.

The painting is signed in white paint in the lower rh corner John R. Dominy dated 1966.

Painting is displayed within a white mount board which is in good condition; a few light marks to inside of glazing which may necessitate opening the frame to clean if required. The original plain cream coloured wooden frame is in good sturdy condition with wear and scuffing to edges commensurate with age; cardboard backing board secured by nails and sealed with framing tape. D501 in pencil script to centre and framer's small label to lower rh corner "J. Pratt & Sons (Derby) Ltd. 31 Curzon St. Derby Est. 1887 etc.". Cord attached to old metal rings.

HMS Hesperus H57, an H-class destroyer, was originally ordered by the Brazilian Navy in the late 1930's, named Jurnena, but later bought by the RN in September 1939 and renamed HMS Hearty then HMS Hesperus. In August 1941 she escorted the battleship HMS Prince of Wales carrying PM Winston Churchill to the Atlantic Charter meeting with President F.D.Roosevelt at Placentia Bay. She was scrapped in 1947.

In the painting she is depicted passing HMS Prince of Wales, King George V-class battleship carrying a Supermarine Walrus amphibious biplane (catapult launched) seen aft of the funnels. HMS Prince of Wales was built by Cammell Laird & Co. Birkenhead, completed 31.03.1941 but sunk by Japanese attack off Kuantan 10.12.1941. This battleship thus confirms the date of the scene to be 1941.

More research is needed to ascertain the location of the scene - will be added in due course. There may be descriptive script verso.

An interesting, active and historical painting by this well-known maritime artist.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour painting depicts ss Ophir of the Orient Steamship Company, renamed HMS Ophir for The Royal Tour of 1901, off Portsmouth's Fortifications with sailing boats in the background and crowds on the beach.

In 1891 the liner was owned by the Orient Steamship Company and carried passengers to and from Australia via Aden and Colombo. In 1901 she was on temporary service as a Royal Yacht HMS Ophir carrying the future King George V and his wife Mary to open the Australian Federal Parliament in Melbourne. She was requisitioned for the War Effort in 1915, returned to her owners in 1918 but never refitted and was broken up in 1922.

The backing paper does not appear to have been fully opened except for the lh edge which has been lifted to view the board beneath. There are two old labels attached, the upper larger one missing about half and stating "With Care .....To The O.......Date July 19. 1......." and below a diamond shaped label with "Griffin & Co. No.2  The Hard Portsea" on an emblem (see images below). (Griffin & Co. No. 2 The Hard, Publishers by Appointment to H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh 1884). Screw-eyes and wire attached.

A very interesting historical painting.

Home in the Jot of Night, watercolour on paper, signed Edwin Earp, c1890. Original frame.

The coastal landscape study depicts a mooring beach and adjacent hamlet with figures and returning fishing boats in the evening. The failing sunlight and approaching darkness capture the transition between day and night and the human race to take shelter from nature. The theme is charateristic of the works of this prolific 19th/20thC British artist who specialised in northwestern English and Scottish landscapes, particularly unfashionable in recent years but now rapidly reclaiming attention.

The watercolour is in good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. Signed Edwin Earp, underlined, in faint black ink in the lower lh corner.

The painting is displayed in period broad gilt mount board which is in good condition apart from two small areas of gilt loss. Some light marking in places to the inside of the glazing. The gilt gesso decorative frame is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing to face but some losses to gesso beading work along the outer edge. Solid oak panel backing board, in two sections, secured by original headless framing nails and partly sealed with old black framing tape which has been torn off in places. Faded titled in black ink script "Home in the Jot of Night Earp" (see images above). "WINDOW" scratched above the title. Various numbers faintly marked to upper frame edge. Framer's label attached to lower centre edge "James Smith Practical Guilder and Picture Framer, 60, Castle Street, Carlisle, Dealer in Pictures, Fancy Stationery and Artists' Materials". Old auction house label attached to upper rh corner. Hanging wire attached to old metal rings.

An attractive study, ready to display or with slight maintenance to the gesso work.

"In South American Waters", watercolour and gouache on paper, signed, titled and dated by WM Birchall, 1910. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour and gouache on paper study of a clipper ship off the coast of South America is in quite good condition with slight fading to the colour and foxing to the sky. The painting depicts a fully loaded clipper ship heading to sea away from the coast which can be seen in the background. Several gulls, highlighted in gouache, are leading the way into the choppy sea against an overcast sullen sky. The original graphite sketch can be seen in parts especially around the rigging. The small foxing spots in the sky are visible but when viewed at normal viewing distance disappear into the lower level cloud and so do not detract from the painting. The painting is titled, signed and dated in the lower lh corner in the artist's usual style. The painting is typical of the work of William Minshall Birchall (1884-1941)  and was executed in 1910 prior to his emigration to Hastings, England, where he spent most of his life. His work is predominantly maritime and many of his works are displayed in collections around the world. The painting is displayed directly beneath glass, as was the manner of the time; a gilt spacer is set between the glazing and the polished frame which is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing and scratching to the face and edges. The card backing board is secured with old panel pins and sealed with 72mm gummed framing tape. Screw-eyes and cord attached. Overall, an excellent example of the work of this well known American maritime artist displaying his ability to accurately capture the image of the ocean in one of her many dispositions.
