Cholon, China Town, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, watercolour on paper street scene, titled, dated and signed. Original oak frame.

The watercolour Impressionist street study in Cholon Saigon is in quite good condition with good colour; there are a few light foxing spots in places. The study depicts a street in the well-known market district of Saigon at the turn of the century (1906). The painting is signed J Anger and titled Cholon - 06 in faded black ink in the lower lh corner, partly concealed by the edge of the frame.

The painting is displayed directly below the glazing of the stained oak veneered frame, which is in good sturdy condition with scuffing and losses in places. Thick wooden backing board secured by nails and sealed with gummed framing tape. Original dark grey framing tape below the latter more recent tape with the full name of the artist Jacques Anger written in faded black ink.

An interesting historical painting by this known French 19th/20thC French artist.

East Asian Shishi, Temple Guardian Lion icon, watercolour on paper, signed faintly A. Clemet with faint date 1891(?) below.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper painting depicts an East Asian  Shishi, Temple Guardian Lion, in an unidentified location, with flowers and Magnolia tree in the courtyard. The painting is in good condition with good colours and no sign of moisture or damage. The painting is signed somewhat indistinctly in red in the lower rh corner which appears to be A. Clemet. Beneath is a faint date inscription which appears to read 1891 but it is not clear. The script does not show on a photo. The painting is displayed within a plain white mount which is in good condition. The heavy, stylistic, wooden frame is in good condition but has five mortises on each inner side of the verticals which appear to have been used for some purpose. There is also green marking on the inside edges of the frame and indications of wear. Considering the nature of this painting I can confidently say that the latter indicates that a pair of doors were originally fitted to the frame so that the image could be concealed when not viewed, as in the case of a shrine painting. This image obviously has religious significance which can be ascertained when the location of the temple is identified. The gilt decoration on each corner is fading in places. The back of the frame is closed with a board secured by 12 wood screws. A hanging bracket is fitted at the top and another was fitted on the lower horizontal but is now missing. No script or labels verso. This is a particularly interesting painting which merits further research. Any updates will be added to this description.

Family Life, Japanese mixed media on silk, late Meiji/Taisho era (late 19th C/early 20th C), framed and glazed.

The mixed media image comprises a typical Meiji/Taisho era woodblock with sections highlighted in brush applied gouache. The particular areas of attention are the baubles hanging from the shade above the man's head, the petals of the painting above the woman's head, the white highlighted items to the right of the woman, the green tassles hanging from the woman's lh sleeve and the smoke rising from the man's mouth which is almost 3-dimensional.

Condition/Notes : The image is in very good condition, protected by the glazed frame. The silk base is in very good condition with no signs of wear or moisture effects and the weave can be quite clearly seen. The smoke rising from the man's mouth is particularly interesting being almost tangible and the accumulation of smoke residue on the wall above his head extremely effective in conveying the image of continuity and contented repitition typical of the Japanese life style in this period. There is some interesting script on the painting above the woman and on her fan which may have significance. The colours are good and fresh indicating that the picture has been well preserved. The ebonized wooden frame is sturdy and well made. The back is protected with a sheet of box secured by lightly rusting pins and sealed with 48mm gummed framing tape. There is a framer's label attached at lower quarter "A.W. Johnson 5 Kensington High St London W8". 2 small cork buffers are attached to the lower edge.

The frame appears to be original and not to have been opened.

Fujisan at Sunset from Shizu-ura, oil on board, signed Shou-yama c1950. Framed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on board study of Fujiyama at Sunset viewed from the beach at Shizu-ura is in good condition with good colours and no damage. There is a slight surface crease to the base which runs horizontally from above the lh side of the peak in the sky down intermittently to the mid-lower edge of the painting but it is not noticeable in normal viewing.  The scene is a very popular view of Mount Fuji from the coastal resort of Shizu-ura and captures the often seen over-hanging Japanese pine tree from the cliff above the beach; the setting sun illuminates the snow-capped peak of Fujisan and illuminates the distant blue haze on the lower slopes of the volcano. An iconic sacred image listed in the World Heritage List and worshipped throughout Japan; at 3776m Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.

Titled Shizu-ura in the lower rh corner and signed with the seal of artist Shou-yama below the title.

The painting is displayed in the original heavy ebonized frame with gilt wood slips; marking and scuffing to the edges and some areas of missing moulding/veneer revealing the wooden frame beneath. Heavy wooden backing board secured with numerous old rusting nails sealed with gummed tape which has torn and desiccated in places.  No visible script. The backing board does not appear to have been removed as much of the original gummed tape is still sealed and unbroken hence there is a possibility of script within.

Note there is some marking on the inside of the glazing. Note there are some reflections in the images.

An interesting study in traditional style of this iconic subject.

Fujiyama, Fujisan, village scene, watercolour on paper, signed by M. Matsu, c1930.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour painting depicts a small village scene with horse and cart and a solitary figure with iconic Mount Fujiyama dominating the scene. The stylized classical Japanese Maple tree contrasts starkly with the frozen peak of Fujiyama Fujisan. The painting is typical of this known Japanese artist. He was active during the 1930's and is recognised as a pre-WWII artist; known for his night scenes. The tone of the painting is also typical of his work as the subdued blue colour features in many of his works.

There are a few foxing marks across the centre of the painting but otherwise the painting is in good condition. The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner. The original frame is in quite good condition with a few marks and scratches to the edges. The back of the frame is covered with a cardboard sheet fixed by old panel pins and sealed with 40mm gummed tape. "By Matsu - artist signed" is written in handscript at the top and the framer's label - Mr T.W. Radley, Wolverhampton - is attached to the lower edge. Hooks and cord attached. Overall, an interesting work of the pre-war Japanese School. Note there are some reflections in the images.

Japanese Ferry in Shizu-ura district landscape study, oil on board, signed Shou-yama, c1955. Framed.

The Japanese genre landscape study in oil is in good condition with good colours and no damage. The study depicts a local ferry transporting three passengers from Shizu-ura. The study captures the characteristic blue haze at sunset which creates an ethereal atmosphere in the scene. The painting is signed in the lower rh corner with the red seal of the artist Shou-yama; indistinct title in black paint above the seal.

The painting is displayed within a gloss black enamelled heavy wooden frame, with gilt slip, which is in sturdy condition but with chips and losses to the black enamel. Wooden backing board secured by old rusty nails and sealed with gummed framing tape which has split in places; does not appear to have been opened.

Japanese Geisha scene with client and attendant, mixed-media woodblock and hand painted gouache on silk base, displayed in original ebonized frame.

Late 19thC/early 20thC Japanese School.

The study is a very interesting scene which depicts the ceremonial nature of the encounter with the geisha and client taking centre stage and the attendant about to enter the room carrying tea. The room is decorated with painted wall scenes and the back wall is intriguingly partly concealed by a Kagoshima screen painting which may well give a clue as to the locaton of the establishment. A fascinating glimpse into the period.

The woodblock is in good condition with good colours. There is a light surface crease approximately 30mm long running horizontally from the left eye of the attendant across to 10mm above the hanging tassle on the door frame but this is not particularly noticeable in normal viewing.

The woodblock is displayed directly beneath the glazing of the ebonized frame which is typical of the period. Good sound condition with light scratching in places. The wooden backing board is secured by panel pins and sealed with gummed framing tape. The framer's label is attached to the centre lower edge "A.W. Johnson, Frame Maker, 5, Kensington High St., London W.8." No visible script.

Please note that the framer A.W. Johnson is listed in the records of the National Portrait Gallery as Arthur Walford Johnson (c1853-1934) registered as trading from premises at 5, Kensington High St., 1929-1940, as a Picture Dealer and Frame maker. A biography is also included.

A very interesting and collectible work.

Love, Blue Light, Yokohama, mixed media work on paper, framed and glazed. Signed by the artist.

Dimensions : Frame : 380mm x 268mm x 12mm. Image : 355mm x 242mm.

Condition/Notes : Good. The mixed media work has good strong colour and the black script "Love" contrasts with the colourful play in the background. The artist has signed Michio below the standard stamp. There is, unfortunately, a water stain below the signature from the lh edge of the frame across to the rh edge. This appears as a slightly darker tone across the lower 45mm section of the work. The cream coloured base is otherwise in very good condition.

The red wooden frame is in good condition with a few minor scratches around the edges. Glazing clear. The back of the frame is covered with an MDF sheet secured by arrow points and sealed with 25mm self-adhesive framing tape.

Possibly inspired by the popular song of the same title by Ayumi Ishida (1968).

The artist is known for his Kumikie Art works and for his Children's Book illustrations.

A biography of the artist written by Uchida Art Co. Ltd., Kyoto, Japan, is attached in centre. Rings and cord attached above.

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on wooden board base is in good condition with good colour and no marking or damage; close examination reveals a few light surface abrasions in the arm area about 20-30mm above the edge of the lower mount but they are not noticeable in normal viewing. The vertical grain of the wooden support is also visible at obtuse angles in certain light conditions but again this is not a concern in normal viewing conditions. The study depicts a young Asian girl in profile looking pensively over a balcony with a grilled, partly eaten, corn on the cob in her hand; considering the date of the painting the subject could be WWII related but no information available at this time. Careful examination cannot find any signature or lettering - the attribution is currently based on the word of previous owner and further information will be added if found. The painting is displayed within a dark purple fabric lined mount which complements the work and is in good condition. The heavy ebonized wooden frame with gilt inner border and gilt outer  border is in sturdy condition but with some chips, scratching  and wear to the gilt on the edges. Hardboard backing secured by small points and sealed with gummed framing tape. Framer's stamp on frame lower edge and on upper edge of backing board "The Peppin Brown Gallery Gallery Picture Frames The Old School House High Street Whittlesford CB24NF Telephone...Fax..." Rainy July day in a Japanese village with houses, two figures and hydrangeas, watercolour on paper laid to board, signed Hiroshi, c1902. Original frame, upgraded and resealed.

The watercolour study depicts a village scene with two figures carrying umbrellas in the street between four houses in a wet and humid July day. Bushes of flowering hydrangeas line the roadside and the distant mountains are shrouded in mist and clouds; a drainage dyke runs along the right-hand edge of the street and catches the eye of the viewer. There is an overpowering sense of humidity and moisture heat pervading the whole environment which is also conveyed to the viewer. The painting is signed Hiroshi in brown paint and underlined in his usual style in the lower lh corner.

There is slight toning to the paint and there is a vertical surface crease mark running from the top edge at approx 50mm in from the lh edge down through the lh brown house and through the signature to the lower edge. This crease is visible but in appropriate display conditions is not at all distracting or detrimental to the enjoyment of the work.

The original oak frame is in good structural condition with light scuffing in places.

Although Hiroshi is predominantly well-known for his paintings of popular and iconic images such as temples and shrines, this unusual rural study tends to conform more to the genre of Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) but he invariably signs his work as H. Yoshida although there is some evidence to support his use of the solitary Hiroshi. However, the strong undelining of Hiroshi is characteristic of Hiroshi's signature but the genre is certainly not typical of this artist. Hiroshi is described as a watercolour artist of the early 20thC Nihonga School who always signed his work in Western style as is Yoshida. On this basis, the price reflects the possibility that this is a work of H. Yoshida. Any further evidence will be reflected in the price.

Based on this uncertainty I have opened the frame to check for any further internal script or evidence but without success - the paper support had been laid to the backing board and no script visible. As the painting had been framed directly below the glazing, which was the practice at that time, I have upgraded the frame by adding an internal non-acidic separator between the glazing and the painting which will help prevent damage to the work and resealed the backing board.

A very enticing and atmospheric painting which captures the beauty of rural Japan in the Meiji period and illustrating the aspects of the Nihonga School.
