Portrait of an Indian Lady, 20th Century Indian School, oil on Daler board.

Condition/Notes : The oil painting is in good condition, impasto, impressionist portrait study of an Indian lady against an  intentionally sombre back-drop (as a relief to the intense light of out-doors). The painting is unfortunately unsigned. The painting was executed on imported Daler board - hence the old backing label. There is an upward bowing to the lower quarter of the board probably caused by atmospheric/humidity changes between India and UK but this can be corrected by framing. The painting has  been very lightly varnished. The back of the board has the original Daler label and the upper lh corner has been torn away. An interesting study which captures the true spirit of India.

Profile Portrait of Asian Girl Eating Corn, oil on board, unsigned but attributed to A.W. Hannaford. c1940. Framed and glazed.

Imperial : Frame : 23-1/2" x 19-1/2" x 1". Image : 16-3/4" x 13".

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on wooden board base is in good condition with good colour and no marking or damage; close examination reveals a few light surface abrasions in the arm area about 20-30mm above the edge of the lower mount but they are not noticeable in normal viewing. The vertical grain of the wooden support is also visible at obtuse angles in certain light conditions but again this is not a concern in normal viewing conditions. The study depicts a young Asian girl in profile looking pensively over a balcony with a grilled, partly eaten, corn on the cob in her hand; considering the date of the painting the subject could be WWII related but no information available at this time. Careful examination cannot find any signature or lettering - the attribution is currently based on the word of previous owner and further information will be added if found. The painting is displayed within a dark purple fabric lined mount which complements the work and is in good condition. The heavy ebonized wooden frame with gilt inner border and gilt outer  border is in sturdy condition but with some chips, scratching  and wear to the gilt on the edges. Hardboard backing secured by small points and sealed with gummed framing tape. Framer's stamp on frame lower edge and on upper edge of backing board "The Peppin Brown Gallery Gallery Picture Frames The Old School House High Street Whittlesford CB24NF Telephone...Fax..." (Peppin Brown Gallery was set up in 1987 by Darryl Nantais and renowned for restoration and framing). No other visible script. Screw-eyes and wire attached.

An interesting painting which will benefit from further research.

Remembrance Day 11.11.1929, oil on board, signed G. Franquin. 1929. Framed.

Condition/Notes : The oil on panel (wooden board) painting depicts a night view of a Continental War Memorial in a park landscape with a solitary figure. The painting is sombre in tone with the focus on the illuminated memorial in the distance and the rear view of a statue to the left of the figure. The central illuminated memorial is depicted in impasto style with the remaining work executed in standard application. The foreground is clay-like in tone and structure and the artist's signature is in the lower rh corner with the date 11.11.1929 below. There is a certain amount of craqueleur in the central region especially in the trees and to the left of the figure. There is a vertical light surface crack in the base board running for 100mm from the top edge of the painting to the rh corner of the large tree but this is not noticeable in normal viewing. The painting is displayed in a gilt moulded frame which is quite sturdy but with chips and scratching in places. The back of the frame is plain wood and the 4mm thick wooden panel base is secured by 7 old nails. There is a surface crack running from the top centre edge of the panel 240mm down the centre of the panel ending about 80mm from the rh edge. The back appears to have previously been sealed with framing tape and a central backing sheet which have been removed at some time. This is an interesting painting and original frame which will benefit from identification of the location.

The oil on canvas study depicts a river landscape with distant fields and mountains. The painting is signed Lamiaa in pale yellow paint in the lower rh corner. Good condition with good colour and no damage.

The painting is displayed within a two tiered gilt decorative wooden frame with inner black felt lining which complements the overall tone of the study. The painting, laid to board, is secured by staples and a nail to the inner wooden frame which is nailed to the outer primary frame. The backing board is faintly scratch signed "LAMY" to the upper centre edge - presumably a shortened version of Lamiaa. No other visible script. Remnants of an old label bearing printed /107A attached to outer centre edge of primary frame.

The artist has been provisionally listed in the East Asian Category (East Asian origin).

Rosenlaui Glacier and Wetterhorn, oil on canvas, signed F. Sommer. Unframed. c1860.

Condition/Notes : The oil on canvas landscape study of the Rosenlaui Glacier and Wetterhorn is in quite good condition although it will benefit from a general clean. The colours are vibrant and there is no paint loss in the main body of the work although there is minor loss along the lower edge especially in the lh corner but this can be concealed in framing. The painting depicts the classic view of the Bernese Alps which is a favourite of artists over the years. Ferdinand Sommer (1822-1901) was a well-known 19th C Swiss artist living in Thun in the canton of Berne and painted under several aliases (Joh. Andreas Ferdinand Sommer, Ferdinand Sommer-Collier, Friedrich Sommer-Collier, and Joh. Andreas Sommer-Collier). He is famous for having taken the young Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) as an apprentice painter in Thun and introduced him to the landscape genre from which he developed his characteristic style. Sommer remained true to his love of his mother country and produced many spectacular Swiss mountain scenes of which this work is typical. He has signed the painting in the lower rh corner in his usual manner. The painting is nailed to the original stretcher and the burlap is fraying at the edges. The painting will certainly benefit from framing and deserves to be displayed in a prime location as an example of the work of Ferdinand Sommer c1860.

A steamer off Bempton Cliffs near Flamborough North Yorkshire in rough seas. Oil on card, unsigned but attributed to Aubrey Ramus, c1930. Framed.

Aubrey Ramus is one of about 11 pseudonyms used by the prolific British artist Francis E. Jamieson (1895-1930) (fl.1900-30) known for his Scottish landscapes and maritime studies in both oil and watercolour.

The oil on card maritime landscape study is in good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. The scene depicts a steamer against a wind scattered sky and gulls flying around the cliffs. There is no sign of a signature and the frame has been opened to confirm this; no script verso.

The attribution is based on the style and subject of the painting, in particular the sky and colours of rocks and seas with a smoking stack on the distant ship which can be seen in several of his maritime works. The popularity of "Jamieson" remains strong today and his paintings are in great demand. The image of steamships and sailing ships are painted with impressionist brushstrokes and impart a sense movement and drama as in this painting.

He usually signed works but there are several known unsigned works similarly attributed.

The painting is displayed within a gilt mount board which is in good condition. The heavy gilt wooden frame is in good structural condition but with small scuffs and chips in places. Original cardboard backing board secured by nails and points and sealed with full Kraft sheet sealed with gummed framing tape. Hanging chain attached to old screw-eyes.

Steamship at anchor discharging to lighter, oil on George Rowney & Co., Birchmore board, signed monogram SDI or possibly DY or YD. c1920. Framed.

Condition/Notes : Very good. The oil on board is in very good condition with good colour, no paint loss and no marking or damage. The painting depicts a coastal steamship at anchor in an estuary discharging cargo to an adjacent lighter with a nearby buoy and a distant lighthouse. The sky is overcast and a single star is shining through the clouds as dusk approaches. The artist has created a romantic scene with the turn of the century steamer turning her engines, as unloading is nearly completed, in preparation for departure. The artist has signed in the lower rh corner in monogram - SDI,DY or YD - as yet unidentified. The painting has been lightly varnished. The base is a George Rowney & Co. Birchmore board size 11-1/2 x 9 which by company records dates it at pre-1924 at which dated the company became George Rowney & Co. Ltd. The plain wooden frame is quite modern indicating that the painting has been reframed in recent times with modern points securing the board. Rings and cord attached. Label attached with 16624 in handscript. An interesting and pleasing study which will benefit from identification of the artist's monogram.

STILL LIFE STUDY OF FLOWERS IN OIL ON BOARD FRAMED c1980's

There is a graze across the top of the second flower right of top centre which lightly crosses the top blue flower and slightly marks the green buds at top left but does not detract from the overall painting. The painting has not been varnished and would probably benefit from an application. There is some scuffing to the edges of the frame. A pleasant original oil painting unsigned.

Still-life study of fruit and a bottle of wine, oil on canvas, signed with monogram I.A.F. and dated 1904 to the lh side of the green apple.

Condition/Notes : The oil painting depicts a collection of fruit around a bottle of wine set on a wooden table with a carved back-board. The painting has been signed to the lh side of the green apple with a monogram IAF and dated 1904 below. The detail of the carved back-board stands out in the study and imparts a depth to the scene. There are a few small areas where the paint has been scratched - to the lh side of the knife handle,  between the first and second fruit, at the frame edge above the second fruit and above the bananas. Apart from these marks there are no major defects. The canvas is quite taut. The frame does not appear to be the original as the stretcher is much older. The back of the frame is plain wood and the mitres are pinned by modern style angle staples. The stretcher is made from older wood with tension wedges fitted. The canvas is nailed to the stretcher. There is faded black ink print on the canvas but only "London W" can be made out at this time. Screw eyes and cord are fitted. This is an interesting work which will benefit from identification of the artist I.A.F.

Still-life study of fruit on a table, oil on panel, signed J. Beveridge (J.A. or A.J. Beveridge), dated 1917. Framed.

Condition/Notes : The oil painting on panel is in quite good/fair condition with some light abrasive marks in places but which do not  detract from the composition. The fruit and leaves are arranged in traditional manner and set against a passive background. The overall painting would benefit from a light clean. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower lh corner and dated 1917. Signature appears to be J. Beveridge but the J appears to be a combination of J over A thus JA or AJ (see image below).

The basic wooden frame is in reasonable condition with some light scuffing and scratching to the edges and some small losses. Also, the lower rh mitre joint is detached and loose - this can be rejoined or the frame replaced with a suitable new frame which can be reduced in width by 5mm to conceal a 9mm long vertical paint loss on the lh edge of the painting to the upper lh of the upper left side leaf. The back of the frame is plain wood and there are remnants of an old backing sheet still attached in places. The most interesting aspect of this frame is the base panel (support) which is part of an old advertising board which has a printed sheet attached advertising "Royal Sovereign" British Make HB pencils and the Royal seal of approval displayed at the side. The panel is attached to the frame with old headless nails typical of this era. Rings and cord attached.

Sunderland lifeboat going to aid of fishing boats in heavy seas off the Sunderland coast, N.E. England, one boat sinking, oil on board, signed T. Galt 1902. Framed.

Condition/Notes : The oil on board maritime study is in quite good condition with good colour. There are four small spots of paint loss on the stern of the sinking fishing boat in the lower rh quarter but they do not detract from the painting and have stabilized. The painting is signed T. Galt in the lower rh corner and dated 1902 below the signature.

The lifeboat station can be seen in the distance and could be the South Outlet lifeboat house which was in operation at this time. The lifeboat appears to be going to the aid of the fishing boat which has picked up the crew from the sinking boat in the foreground.

The painting is displayed within a worn gilt wooden frame which has scratching and scuffing to face and edges. Back of the frame is sealed with dust-sheet secured by gummed tape. Hanging cord attached.

An interesting maritime scene benefitting from signature and date.

The work is signed Gomez in the lower lh corner. The scene depicts a view across the bay on the Amalfi coast from behind the small building. An interesting and colourful composition. Staniland's Old Barn, West Retford, oil on Reeves "Ashwin" oil sketching board, unsigned but known to be by artist R. Fuller, c1960. Unframed.

The oil study of the old barn is in fair condition but with good colour. There is a vertical crease down the centre of the painting from top to bottom and a crease to the lower rh corner with the surface detached. Also several small paint splashes in various places  and some surface marking/grime to the rh side of the painting. A general surface clean will remove most of this and framing will conceal the damaged edges of the board.

The painting depicts an old barn known as Staniland's Barn which was on a field used for cattle grazing in the 1950/60's in West Retford; the field is now a housing development and so the image is of historical interest. Unsigned by the artist but known to be by R. Fuller.

Board verso with marking but no script. Reeves "Ashwin" Oil Sketching Board Fine Grain label attached top lh corner and 20 X 16 stamped in the upper rh corner (20" x 16").
