Here are the two Hassan el Yashmid watercolour paintings framed under glass in original ebonized frames with hanging chains. Very rare to see original Yashmid watercolours in such good condition.

An interesting discussion has been ongoing for several years regarding the possibility that paintings signed by Hassan el Yashmid were actually painted by the English artist Arthur Dudley aka Giovanni Barbaro but this has since been dismissed.. The paintings are watercolours on paper and depict Egyptian desert scenes usually located near to the River Nile and Egyptian town scenes with particular emphasis on the Islamic architecture. The styles are similar in location to Barbaro's works and they usually portray solitary Arabian figures in stylised poses typical of the Victorian/Edwardian period. The original watercolours are rare but reproductions of these framed in decorated oak or pasted to card on plain glazed boards with hanging chains are fairly common and can be found around the world. This distribution is probably a consequence of the pictures being sold from bumboats to passing ships in the Suez Canal or in the local souks of Port Said or Suez.

If anyone has any information on Hassan el Yashmid, or owns any of his works, I would be very interested in hearing from you.

This scene appears to be a companion to the previous, probably an alternative exit from the souk. Note the shadow cast by the minaret. Framed under glass. Dimensions : 300mm x 600mm. c1900.

Orange seller under palm tree on the bank of the Nile, print of watercolour pasted to card, mounted on wooden board under glass, fitted with hanging chain. Have been advised by Marti that the above is titled "A Well Earned Rest". Thank you Marti for that information.
