Watercolour on paper study titled "Near Loch Vennacher, Perthshire" signed George Oyston and dated 1919.
The study depicts the landscape aside to Loch Vennacher with rolling hills to the hinder and grazing sheep to the foreground; a freshwater lake in the Trossachs today known as Loch Venachar.
The painting captures the solitude of the Scottish region between the Highlands and the Lowlands and is a departure from the artist's usual southern England scenes.
The painting is in good condition with good colours and no damage. There are small shadows cast from the interior of the glazing but this can be removed by cleaning the interior of the glazing. The artist has signed the painting in brown paint "George Oyston. 1919." in the lower rh corner in his usual style.
The painting is displayed within the 60mm wide gilt spacer with the title and artist name in black ink lower centre "Near Loch Vennacher, Perthshire" GEORGE OYSTON. The decorative gilt gesso frame is in good sturdy condition but with losses in places to the beading and surface cracking to the gesso edges. Wooden backing board secured by original nails and sealed with gummed framing tape (original and recent addition to upper board edge). Faint handscript to centre board "1985" and "Bower 23" inverted. Metal brackets attached with hanging wire. A heavy original frame.
The framed painting can be displayed in the present condition to retain the period style frame and associated aging or it can be reframed to your own preference in which case it can be delivered unframed.
Please view the images above. Please note there are some reflections in the glazing due to the size of the frame.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour drawing is in good condition with subdued colour. The scene depicts the hills near to Portree and a croft with haystacks nearby. The drawing has captured the contours of the landscape faithfully as can be seen in photographs of the location. The original pencil drawing can be clearly seen and this has been left unpainted in several areas. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower rh corner with the title Nr. Portree beneath the signature; displayed within an old multi-lined stone coloured mount which is in quite good condition. The gilt edged wooden frame is in good condition with light wear to the edges. Verso covered with a sheet of cardboard held in position by staples. The backing board can be easily removed and this reveals that the artist has titled the painting verso in ink handscript "Near Portree Scotland" with his signature below. Hanging lug attached at top. Nero's Tower, Rome, watercolour and graphite, signed Leitch (W.L. Leitch 1804-1883), c1854. Framed and glazed.
Condition/Notes : The watercolour and graphite painting depicts the historic structure popularly known as Nero's Tower from which the Emperor Nero is reputed to have watched the Great Fire of Rome. The full title of the painting is attached verso "Torre dene Milizie with s.s. Domenico E Sisto in the background". The colours are good and typical of Leitch's style and the graphite drawing can be seen in places particularly the outlines of the structures. The painting is signed "Leitch" in graphite in the lower rh corner. There is no foxing or moisture but there is slight undulation of the paper ground along the lower edge which could be corrected on opening the frame if required. An interesting and historical drawing of this famous location in Rome which can be quite accurately dated by the recorded return of Leitch accompanied by Sir Coutts Lindsay to Rome in 1854. The painting is displayed within a triple lined pale white mount which is also in good condition with no marking or damage and slight toning to the window's cut edges. The gilt wooden frame is also in good condition with light wear to edges. The frame is backed with a cardboard sheet secured by panel pins; there are remnants of framing tape around the edges indicating that the frame has been opened at some time. A label is attached at the lower edge stating "William Leighton Leitch, R.W.S., 1804-1883, watercolour of Torre dene Milizie with s.s. Domenico E Sisto in the background, signed". Newlyn Harbour, watercolour on Arne board, titled and signed TH Victor. c1960.
Condition/Notes : The watercolour on board painting is in good condition but with subdued colours probably due to absorption by the hand made paper mounted on the board. This has given the painting an aged appearance. Details of the Arne board are clearly listed verso indicating that this board has a NOT surface (cold-pressed, very fine). Currently researching this Daler board and will update in due course. 27.02.2014 - Have now been advised by DR, Technical Dept., Daler-Rowney Ltd., Wareham, that the Arne watercolour board was discontinued in the early 1980's and would have been produced from 1960's, so this confirms that the work is a later study and confirms my c1960 as the date of creation. Interestingly, this scene has been studied on several occasions by Victor and created with very slight variations presumably from his original sketches. The scene is a classic view of Newlyn Harbour. The painting is titled in the artist's hand to the lower edge left of centre below the lobster pots and signed in his usual manner in the lower rh corner. Interestingly, the watercolour painting is framed in pine but unglazed (intentionally and not due to missing glass). The frame is in good condition and complements the tone of the painting; verso secured by 6 nails. Full details of the Arne board are printed in red indicating this is Mounted with Hand Made Paper in NOT Surface, Made in England by Daler Board Co., Ltd., Wareham - Dorset (see the images below). The frame is stamped Instaframe UK. Cord attached.

Old Wharf, Mousehole, Cornwall, watercolour on paper signed TH Victor, c1950. Framed.
Condition/Notes : Good/Very good. Here is another variation of the very popular study of Old Wharf, Mousehole Harbour, Mousehole Cornwall, signed by the very well-known listed Cornish artist Thomas Herbert Victor. The painting is in very good condition with good colour in his somewhat subdued tones and without any damage or marking. The painting is more populated than many of his other studies of the same scene and St Michael's Mount can be seen beyond the harbour entrance. His usual signature is in the lower rh corner and the title is written in capitals along the centre lower edge. The image has been executed within a pencil delineated rectangle on the paper base and bordered by a single blue line producing a complementary 8-10mm wide boundary giving the impression of a mount window. The 30mm wide border on the paper base is in good condition without marking or damage.
Displayed directly below the glazing in the 15mm recessed cream coloured painted pinewood original frame which is in good sturdy condition with very light wear to the edges. Heavy-duty card backing board secured by rusted arrow points and sealed with 25mm gummed framing tape; rings and cord attached. Old Boots Picture Framing Department label with pencil reference numbers 4715 1118 in handscript attached to lower centre edge and stamped 21 SEP 1962 below the label.

On Roof of Chateau d'Hydra, Alger, Algeria, watercolour on art paper, with a second watercolour, untitled, depicting part of the gardens below, on heavy art board, acting as backing board to the latter. 19th Century School. Framed and glazed. c1880.
Condition/Notes : The primary painting which displays the roof of the Chateau d'Hydra is in quite good condition. The colours are subdued and yet clear as would be experienced in the heat of the day. The view is towards the sea from the heights overlooking the Port of Algiers. This scene is famous in Algiers as it is on the roof of the city's most famous building dating from the second half of the 18th Century and also known as the Castle of Hydra which has housed the Turkish General Ali Agha, the Consul of Sweden and Norway in 1830, Emperor Napoleon III in 1865, Serge Peltzer in 1902, acquired by the City of Algiers in 1942, the Staff of the 10th Airbourne Division of General Massu settled here in 1955 and currently the French Embassy. The painting appears to be unfinished as there are sections of the original pencil sketch which have not been painted. The title of the painting is written in handscript lower rh corner. The sky gives the impression of blank glare characteristic of the heat of a typical Algerian afternoon. There is an area in the lower lh corner of damp stain with some fungal staining. The back of the painting is blank but with pencil handscript lower rh side stating "Roof of a Moorish House Algiers". The second watercolour painting, on heavy art board, is primarily the study of the trees in the garden surrounding the building as viewed from the roof. This painting is completed. It appears to have been used as the backing board in the wooden frame for the main painting although there are remnants of another board attached in parts to the back of this painting. There is a small area of previous damp with fungal stain in the top rh corner but this does not affect the main area of the painting. Overall, an interesting pair of paintings of historical interest but unfortunately unsigned unless the word below "Roof of a Moorish House" is not Algiers but the name of the artist (Aljsiu or Algsiu or Aljseu). The old wooden frame is in sturdy condition and quite stylish which suits the painting.
Note the Unframed shipping charge includes the 2nd painting on a heavy board.
Note there reflections in the glazing in the images.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The painting depicts a calm river scene on a sultry afternoon with a figure on a boat and birds flying above a distant church. The scene is typical of a Norfolk School study and similar to other known works of this 19th Century artist. The work is signed A. Turner in the lower rh corner and titled "On the Boat" in the lower lh corner. The painting is displayed in a period gilt mount which is in good condition with light toning to the window edges. The original plain gilt frame is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing in places commensurate with its age; sealed with a sheet of Kraft paper. No visible script but removal of backing board may reveal some descriptive text. An interesting late 19th Century English School work signed by this listed artist.

The work is signed in the lower lh corner with initials K.S.N. which have not yet been identified. The paper support has been backed with a gummed part news sheet dated Saturday February 21 1863 which is probably a good indication of the approximate date of the work. Nazzarreno Cipriani (1843-1925), Italian.
Imperial : Frame : 17-1/2" x 14" x 1-1/2". Image : 13-3/4" x 10-1/4".
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper portrait study of a North African woman is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The accomplished work presents a realistic tone to the woman's face and skilfully captures the light reflections; this artist is known for his portrait studies and has created several similar themed works. The painting is signed N. Cipriani in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual style. Considering that the work is over 120 years of age it is in very good condition and has been very well maintained. The buff coloured fabric lined recessed wooden frame is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing and scratching to face and edges; the inner edge is painted white with a gilt surround. The glazing is clear and the painting is displayed directly below the glass without a spacer as was the practice at that time. The acidic cardboard backing board is secured by arrow points and sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. A pale blue framer's label is attached to the lower edge "Tel, Reading 54140 Reading Fine Art Gallery Ltd Picture Framers and Restorers 81 London Street, Reading, Berks. Job Number 16286"; no record found of this framer/gallery to date - will update if any details found*. Screw-eyes and cord attached.
An attractive and well executed work by this listed Italian artist benefiting from the artist's signature.
