The Pool of London, towards Tower Bridge, River Thames, watercolour on paper, signed Michael Crawley, c1970. Framed.

The watercolour maritime study of the River Thames is in very good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. The study is one of many studies of the River Thames by Michael Crawley in his Port of London series. The study depicts a very busy scene in the Pool of London with many cargo ships, Thames barges and lighters working cargo alongside and from moorings with Tower Bridge in the distance; clipper ship also visible. A low mauve evening sky casts its tone onto the river and intermingles with the reflected pale blue of the receeding daylight adding a warm hue to the scene. Signed Michael Crawley in dark brown paint in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual style.

The painting is displayed within a lined stone coloured mount which is in good condition.

The gilt wooden frame is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing in places. Hardboard backing board secured by nails and sealed with gummed framing tape. Small title label attached upper lh corner written in artist's pencil script "River Thames Tower Bridge". No other visible script. Hanging cord attached to two screw-eyes.

A very pleasing work by this well-known prolific British artist noted for his Maritime and Derbyshire studies.

The River Derwent in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, viewed from the foot bridge across the river, on a sunny summer's day, with boaters on the river.

A classic landscape study of the river in Matlock Bath with the rolling Derbyshire landscape in the background. The study captures the tranquility of the scene and presents a typical English scene.

The study is typical of the work of this prolific English artist known for his Derbyshire landscape studies.

The painting is in very good condition with vibrant colours and no damage or marking. The aritst has signed the work in the lower rh corner in his usual underlined style.

The painting is displayed within multiple wash-lined cream coloured mount which is in good condition.

The large, heavy, gilt coloured, traditional style, wooden frame is in good sturdy condition but with scuffs and scratches in places. To my mind these scuffs and scratches do not distract from the enjoyment of the painting which can be displayed in the current condition.  Backing board secured by nails and fully sealed with Kraft style dust-sheet gummed to the board. Title label attached to top lh corner  "River Derwent - Matlock Bath - Derbys" in the artist's pencil handscript. Heavy hanging wire attached to metal rings.

Watercolour on paper study of the Temple in Clumber Park, North Nottinghamshire, England, titled, signed and dated.

20thC Outsider Art.

The watercolour painting is in good condition with good colours. The study depicts the Temple building in Clumber Park amid the summer natural glory and a couple in front of the lake. The vegetation of the scene dominates the study but the Temple, subject of the study, distracts the viewer and creates an aura of seclusion and mystery around the structure. The artist has signed and dated the painting JR Gelsthorpe 89 in light brown paint in the lower rh corner. The title "The Temple Clumber Park" is written in the artist's hand, in black paint, in the lower mid-margin.

Displayed within a dark brown mount board, housed in a recessed stained wooden frame with non-reflective glazing; scratching and scuffing in places and 90mm surface loss to rh lower corner edge. Cardboard backing board secured by panel pins and self-adhesive framing tape which is detached in places. The artist's name and address is written in Biro top lh corner with capital letter C encircled below.

Will benefit from re-framing.

Three Fishing Smacks at Moorings, Tobermory Harbour, Mull, watercolour on paper, signed John Terris R.S.W.. c1891. Framed and glazed.

Imperial : Frame : 13-1/2" x 16-3/4" x 2". Image : 9-1/4" x 12-1/2".

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with no damage and in his characteristically subdued colours; there are a few very small specks in the sky but of no consequence. The painting depicts three fishing smacks at moorings with smoke rising from the stoves and figures on deck in what is thought to be Tobermory Harbour with the old pier to the rh side; the scene is typical of this artist's work which often portrays coastal scenes. The painting is signed in the lower rh corner partly obscured by the frame edge and there appears to be more script below which could be the date but this is concealed. The painting is displayed directly below the glazing as per normal practice at that time; the ornate gilt wood and composition frame is in good condition with no losses and light wear. Verso sealed with hardboard backing secured with points; two small areas of damage to the backing board. Screw-eyes and cord attached. The frame, although complementing the painting, does appear to be a more recent replacement, probably in the style of the original. Any further information will be added in due course.

The frame has been opened to investigate the script - turns out to be R.S.W. below the signature and not a date. This is interesting as it confirms that the painting was not completed before 1891 the date of his election to the R.S.W. and probably indicates that the painting was completed that year or soon after. It is known that he was living in Scotland at this time. There is also an interesting graphite sketch on the paper support verso.

Further examination of the above sketches indicates that they are prep drawings for his watercolour study titled Windsor Castle which was sold at auction 25.06.2014 at Maynards Auction House, Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

The painting is signed A. Smith and dated 2001 in the lower rh corner. Part of a label verso indicating the artist's name Alan Smith.

The work is presented within a beige outer and grey coloured inner double mount display which is in good condition. The contemporary dark grey and faded gilt inner wooden frame is in good condition, light scuffing in places. Hardboard backing board secured with points, sealed with framing tape. Remnants of label attached lower centre "Arriving Hull Original watercolour by Alan Smith". Gold framer's label below "The Vernon Gallery...E. Yorks...contact details". Number 23 in chalk near centre. No visible script.

Turkish River Crossing, with mosque and boats, watercolour and gouache on paper, unsigned. Framed and glazed. c1900.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour and gouache painting is in good condition with strong colours and no damage or moisture. The scene depicts a ferry-boat crossing with two figures and boats and the illuminated mosque and associated buildings on the opposite shore. The scene is at dusk and the lights from the ferry landing are reflected in the water which highlights the painting. The actual location is currently uncertain but is in Turkey; any update will be added. The painting is unsigned and there is no description or title visible. The original stone coloured mount is in good condition with slight toning to the window edges. Original gilt wooden frame is sturdy and in quite good condition with scuffing and scratching around the edges; backing board in three separate wooden sheets  secured by old rusty pins with remnants of an old backing sheet in places. Screw-eyes and cord attached.

Overall, a very attractive painting in the Orientalist style which will benefit from identification of the location and the artist.

Imperial : Frame : 6" x 7" x 3/4". Image : 4-1/2" x 5-1/2".

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with quite good toned colour and a few light foxing marks. The study depicts a Venice canal scene with buildings each side and a wintry sky portayed in Bennett's characteristic style; this work is probably a preparatory study completed en plein air for a later larger painting. The painting is ostensibly unsigned although there appears to be some faint indistinct script in the lower rh corner which may be a signature. The original mottled dark grey/green frame has wear to edges and face; verso hardboard backing nailed in place sealed with dark brown dust sheet which is torn at the edges. Godwin Bennet label attached "Godwin Bennett Fine Art Dealer and Publisher 97 George Street Croydon Surry No. 8919" and a small white label to lh side. Small  screw-eyes and string attached.

Godwin Bennett was an art dealer and self taught artist painting scenes of towns in the West Country and Southern England, originally from Brighton. Travelled widely in Europe, Middle East as reflected in his works.

Village scene, watercolour on paper, signed by the artist's monogram JKM 45, framed and glazed. The painting depicts a quiet English village scene with houses and green.

The painting is in the style of J.K. Morgan although the artist usually signs with the initials J.K.M.. Further research is being carried out to determine the artist and any results will be updated.

Condition/Notes : The painting is in good condition. The colours are strong but there is some toning areas to the sky above the centre house and the tree to the left. There is no foxing or moisture ingress. The original pencil sketch can be seen in the pathway and around the buildings. The lettering and date 1707 on the lh building is of interest.  The monogram is in the lh corner. The painting is displayed within an original off-white mount which has toning around the edges and varying dusting in places. The cut window edges are browned. The mount appears to be original. The oak frame is in good condition except for a small chip 65mm down from the upper rh corner on the inside edge. The glazing is clear and undamaged. The back of the frame is covered with a card backing board held in place by old pins and sealed with 1-1/2" old gummed faming tape. Two rings are fitted to the board and hanging cord. The frame does not appear to have been opened.

Overall, an interesting watercolour of the English School (Victorian period).

Whitby Abbey with cattle, herdsman and figures, watercolour on paper, unsigned but attributed to Mary Weatherill, c1880. Framed.

The watercolour study of Whitby Abbey with cattle and herdsman is in good condition with good strong colours. Note the couple sitting next to the monument and the distant sea views. There are a few small foxing spots in the sky and a faint toning band along the upper and side edges of the paper support indicating that the painting was previously framed in a smaller frame or below a smaller mount window. Pencil mark can be seen in places along the cut edges of the paper support indicating that the painting has probably been cut to size at some time. There is surface cracking to the paint in the lower lh corner but this is not noticeable in normal viewing amid the dark vegetation cluster in that corner - this could be the reason for the smaller previous mount/frame in an attempt to conceal this. There are also two small creases to the lower rh corner but again not noticeable in normal viewing. Otherwise, overall good condition.

The painting is unsigned and the frame has been opened to check for any script verso which revealed the pencil handscript "Whitby Abbey Yorkshire".

Mary Weatherill created many such works and the theme of the study is typical of them. The attribution is based on the style and technique of the work and particularly the colours employed in addition to the overall feel of the painting. She frequently left her paintings unsigned although many were later attributed to her by her brother Richard who inscribed them as such.

The painting is displayed unusually within the cream coloured mount window revealing the cut edges of the paper support and hinged verso within the mount and backing mount board sandwich; mount boards are quite new and in good condition.  Antique style gilt wooden frame is in good condition with very light scuffing in places; backing board secured by modern arrow points and sealed with kraft paper dust sheet sealed with gummed tape. Hanging cord attached to screwed metal lugs.

Overall a very pleasing work by this prolific Yorkshire artist.

Whitby Abbey with Figure sitting Beneath a Memorial, watercolour on paper, titled Whitby Abbey in handscript and signed initials GW. George Weatherill, c1850. Framed and glazed.

Imperial : Frame : 12-1/4" x 16" x 3/4". Image : 6-3/4" x 10-1/2".

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper study of Whitby Abbey is in quite good condition with quite good colour and no damage to support; there is quite a lot of foxing which is particularly noticeable in the sky.  The single cross monument to the rh side of the Abbey is thought to relate to the original burial ground and a solitary figure is seen sitting on the steps. The pencil outline drawing can be seen in places which is  frequently seen in the works of this artist; the subdued colour tone of the vegetation in the foreground is also typical of his style. The painting is signed in initials GW (George Weatherill) in the lower rh corner in the style frequently seen in his other works (curling W and long downstroke G followed by the small dash) and the title in left centre lower edge in handscript with a wide winged W (differing to the signature) which is seen in titles on some other works. This work appears to be an early study of the subject probably in preparation for one of his later paintings hence the somewhat incomplete sky to the background. Displayed within the original off-white mount which is in fair condition with moisture stains in places. The quite modern plain wooden frame is in sturdy condition with scuffing in places; older acid board backing sealed with gummed tape, handscript top edge "George Weatherill - Whitby Abbey".  Screw-eyes and wire attached.

Whitby Harbour Old Bridge, watercolour on paper, signed K. Hall, c1880. Framed.

Kate A. Hall, 19th/20thC, known to have exhibited between 1882 and 1886.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour on paper study is in very good condition with good colour and no marking or damage. The study depicts the west side of Whitby Harbour Bridge (1835-1908) with figures and a passing River Esk barge; this bridge was replaced by the current swing bridge in 1909. The painting is signed K. Hall in the lower lh corner; no visible inscription. The cream coloured multi-lined mount board is in good condition with no marking or damage. The gilt wooden frame is likewise in good condition with light scuffing to the edges. Wooden plywood backing board is nailed to the frame and sealed with gummed tape; inscribed River Scene. K. Hall 8-1/4" x 13-1/8", No. 21 upper lh corner, £40.- and another small label No. 21.

An interesting historical painting of this ever popular scene. Similar studies of this bridge have been painted by Elias Bancroft, A.H. Morgan and Lionel Townsend Crawshaw in the early 1900's but this is unusual in depicting the western side of the bridge looking north.

Whitby Harbour, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed E. Nevil (Edward Nevil) and titled in the same hand Whitby. Framed and glazed with acrylic.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour and gouache on paper painting of Whitby Harbour is in very good condition with good colour and no foxing or damage. The painting depicts the harbour and the Old Town with the bridge which preceded the present day swing bridge which was built in 1908/09. The painting is signed in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual manner although he often signed in capital letters. He has also titled the painting "Whitby" in the lower lh corner. Edward Nevil flourished between 1880 and 1900 and has created several similar scenes of Whitby and Staithes and general maritime coastal scenes. The painting is displayed within a granite coloured conservation mount which is also in good condition. The gilt frame is in good condition with light scratching in places and backed with a hardboard sheet. Framer's label is attached which states that the frame has been glazed with acrylic for safety reasons which accounts for the quite light weight of the frame. Rings and cord attached. Whitby, cottages overlooking the harbour, watercolour on paper, signed J.R. Edwards, dated 1909. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour on paper study of Whitby is in good condition with good colour and no foxing or damage. There is some light marking in the sky which can be cleaned on opening the frame. The painting depicts a study of the old cottages, turn of the century, overlooking the famous Whitby harbour with a few standing figures. The harbour is instantly recognizable and has the characteristic smoke haze over the town. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower lh corner and dated 1909. The painting is displayed within a period gilt mount which is in a fair condition having some staining around the edges, toning in places and gilt loss on the window edges. The painting will benefit from a conservation mount and re-framing. The original ornate gilt frame is worn and there are chips in places. The back of the frame is covered with an old backing board secured by 40mm framing tape which is detached in the upper lh quarter revealing an old backing sheet of card secured by  rusty panel pins every 50mm. This does not appear to have been opened at any time. Old screw-eyes and cord are attached. This is an interesting work capturing Whitby at the beginning of the 20th Century and benefitting from the artist's signature and date.

Woman carrying a Child near a fenced house in the Fens, watercolour on art card, signed in initials RM and dated 1888. Framed.

Robert Walker Macbeth, known for his genre landscapes.

The watercolour painting with gouache and scratching-out highlights in places is in good condition with good colours. There is an approx 5mm wide toning/acid line from a previous smaller mount board around the edge of the painting but only noticeable in the upper sky quarter  below which it merges with the darker painting - this could be concealed by a smaller mount window if desired but I would not consider necessary. The painting is signed and dated RM 1888 in off white paint.

Robert Walker Macbeth (1848-1910 born Glasgow s/o Norman Macbeth) is known to sign with this monogram followed by the date and he particularly created rustic genre landscape studies located in the English Fens.

The painting is displayed in an off-white mount which is in very good condition. Plain gilt wooden frame with inner beading which has scuffing and some scratching to face. Hardboard backing secured by modern points and sealed with framing tape. Has been re-framed recently. Cord attached. No visible script verso.
