Looking towards Oddicombe Beach from Babbacombe Downs, South Devon, gouache on paper pasted to acid board, signed A.M. Scott. c1890. Original frame.
Condition/Notes : The gouache on paper study of the Devon coastline near to Oddicombe Beach is in quite good condition with very good colour and generally good condition except for a surface crack above the horizon to the right of centre. This crack to the paint surface has been caused by a dent to the backing acid board at some time resulting in a crease to the board which has cracked the paint; in normal viewing the defect is not really noticeable. Otherwise, the painting is a delightful study of the coastline and associated details drawing the viewer towards the buildings along the distant shore on the horizon.
The painting on paper is pasted to an acid board which was common practice at the end of the 19thC.
The frame has been opened and the painting and board examined carefully; no visible script or indications.
Displayed directly below the glazing in the original period decorated gilt wooden frame with purple coloured felt inner lining which complements the vegetation in the foreground. Light scuffing to the frame and some losses to gilt on the edges. Decoration to face in good condition. Plywood backing board lightly secured by pins and partly sealed with framing tape. Partly obscured framer's label visible beneath gummed tape in upper rh corner. Frame is worthy of maintenance and resealing but will leave for future owner's internal inspection before completion. No visible script.
An interesting late 19thC antique gouache study which will benefit from more research.

Old Street Scene in Naples, gouache on paper, signed Y. Gianni. 19th/20th Century Neapolitan School, c1900. Framed and glazed.
Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache on paper study of an Old Street in Naples, in traditional Neapolitan School style, signed by the renowned master Y. Gianni, is in very good condition with good strong colour and with no signs of damage or moisture. The composition depicts a typical Naples street scene with overlooking balconies and a side-stall, Gianni's favourite mother and child couple and street traffic passing an old archway into a distant vista. The sense of movement is achieved by the tight perspective accentuated by the tall buildings drawing the viewer into the scene. A classic Gianni technique which works very well in this large detailed work. The painting is signed by the artist in his usual manner in the lower lh corner. The painting is displayed in traditional period manner without a mount within a gilt decorated felt edged wooden frame which is in good condition with light wear and some fraying of the felt. The backing board is secured by pins and sealed with a sheet of brown backing paper. Hooks and wire attached. Overall, an excellent Neapolitan School work, in good condition and benefiting from the artist's signature.

R.M.S. Moldavia (P & O Line), gouache and watercolour on paper, titled in artist's handscript and signed C.WF (Charles W. Fothergill) 1917. Framed and glazed in original. Ship Portrait.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The gouache and watercolour on paper study of R.M.S. Moldavia is in quite good condition with good strong colours and no marking or damage. There is some light surface creasing to the paper base in places, particularly the sea in the foreground, but this is not noticeable in normal viewing. The fine details of the rigging and radio antenna are in pencil but the remainder predominantly gouache with watercolour backing. Interestingly, there is no sign of the ship's name on the painting and likewise in some original photographs the name is not visible. The ship was built by Caird & Company of Greenock, for P & O and launched 28 March 1903 for the England - Australia passenger trade. In 1915 she was purchased by the Admiralty and converted to an armed merchant cruiser and troopship. On 23 May 1918 she was sunk off Beach Head by a single torpedo from submarine SM UB-57 with the loss of 56 US soldiers. The wreck is a popular diving site to this day. The painting is signed in monogram CWF to the lower rh corner and dated 1917; it is also titled in the same hand and paint along the lower edge adjacent to the frame. Close examination of the monogram reveals what appears to be C./F but from an angle the / could be part of a W and this is in common with the artist's known monogram followed by the date; the subject study is also typical of this artist's maritime work. Other interesting aspects of this study are the red cross on white pennant (number 8) on the foremast, the P & O house flag on the after-mast (even though the ship had been sold to the Admiralty in 1917) and the white structure on the coast aft of the ship. Any more details will be added in due course. The original worn gilt frame is sturdy but with scuffing to the face and chips to moulding in places; verso backed with acid board secured by old headless nails. Dust-sheet has been torn at top and side edges revealing the backing board. Framer's label attached to lower edge "John W. MIlls, 7,9,11, The Arcade, Portsmouth". Old screw-eyes and tangled wire attached. No other visible script.

Condition/Notes : Very good. The gouache on paper study is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The bleak attractive landscape is interesting with a glimpse of the distant sea and the Tower/Folly. The Valley of the Rocks was a very popular spot in Victorian times. Signed in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual manner.
Displayed within a stone coloured mount which is in good condition.
The standard contemporary pine frame is in good condition. Hardboard backing board secured by nails and sealed with black linen adhesive tape. Rings and cord attached. Framer's label attached to upper mid-edge.

Sandown Castle Mill, Deal, gouache and watercolour on paper, signed initals JP, titled Sandown Castle, dated 1825.
Imperial : Frame : 10-1/2" x 14-1/2" x 3/4". Image : 4-1/2" x 7-1/2".
Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache (predominantly) and watercolour study is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking/moisture. The study depicts the well known Sandown Castle and the nearby Smock Mill on the Kent coast near Deal - the Mill on this site predates the current records and was associated with the Castle. The study is very interesting as it details the now derelict, demolished castle and the associated structures in 1825 and illustrates the enterprise associated with this area especially the grounded fishing smacks and mills on the distant shoreline. As can be seen the castle is garrisoned having been occupied since the Napoleonic Wars in 1808 and remained so until 1863 when it was sold by the War Office. The painting is signed initials JP, titled Sandown Castle and dated 1825 in the lower rh corner by the anchor; initials JP were used by the English artist James Price who has other listed work in nearby Broadstairs Kent at this time. The painting is displayed in a gilt mount with painted gilt window edges which is in good condition. The ebonized frame with gilt inner edge is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing to face; quite new hardboard backing board secured by arrow points sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. Screw-eyes and cord attached. No script or labels attached.
Overall, a very interesting historical painting attributed to James Price as an early work prior to his recognised active period 1842-76 based on his previously used initials JP and geographical location of this and other similar works.

ss Penrith Castle, James Chambers & Co., Liverpool, Arriving at Port. Gouache on paper, unsigned. Attributed to H. Crane - a follower of Antonio de Simone. c1910. Framed and glazed. Ship Portrait.
Condition/Notes : The gouache on paper painting of ss Penrith Castle c1910 is in good condition with good strong colour typical of de Simone. Attributed to the British maritime artist H. Crane 19th/20th C (Great Yarmouth Museum) (maybe signed below mount). Close examination under glass does reveal some very slight surface marking ahead of the bow and there is a long surface scratch mark commencing at 17mm above the halyard down through the R flag, through the after corner of the tarpaulin awning, aft of the bridge, ending in the sea 5mm below the midships water-line; fortunately this is not noticeable in normal viewing. Interesting aspects of this painting are the signal flags indicating that she is approaching port , preparing to enter and requesting clearance and the James Chambers & Co. house flag hoisted on the after-mast which confirms the approximate date of the depiction as she was sold to Atlantic & Eastern Steamship Co. Ltd. in 1916 (and renamed ss Alaveno). Built in 1900 by William Pickersgill & Sons Sunderland, she was the first of four ships named Penrith Castle, and was renamed four times as Alaveno, Kayak, City of Patras and Zannis Pandelis under which she was wrecked on 13th March 1928 in English Roads, Bonavista Islands on a voyage from Barry to Rio do Janeiro with a cargo of coal. A very interesting history and a good choice for a de Simone maritime study. The painting is displayed within a double, beige/oyster coloured, conservation mount arrangement with complementary window lining in pastel blue and sandstone. The mounts are in very good condition and appear to be quite new. The mottled gilt wooden frame is in good condition; MDF backing board sealed with framing tape. Hanging cord attached. No script or labels.

Taking a rest opposite the mosque, gouache on paper, signed Hassan el Yashmid, c1900. Original ebonized frame.
The study depicts a worshipper taking a rest opposite the mosque. The heat of the day blends the structures of the mosque into a solid mass void of shadow from the midday sun. A nearby date palm dominates the scene and offers a refuge from the heat. The colours are vibrant and typical of the work of this well-known artist although his actual biography is vague and uncertain. Lithographic prints of his works are common but original works are rare which makes this painting particulary desirable to the collector.
Good colours and no damage or marking. Signed in brown paint "Hassan el Yashmid", underlined in his usual style, in the lower rh corner.
The painting is displayed within the original period heavy ebonized wooden frame with a decorative mottled gilt slip; sturdy but with losses and scuffing in places. Cardboard backing board secured by numerous rusty nails and partly sealed with heavy dark khaki coloured dust-sheet which is torn in places. Heavy metal hanging chain attached to old screw-eyes. 00/1 Ea in pencil script lower centre.

The End of the Line, Industrial Railway art study of redundant steam locos awaiting scrap at Woodham's scrap yard Barry Island, South Wales.
The gouache on paper study is in very good condition depicting an outer section of Woodham's scrap yard at Barry Island with GWR loco 7200, 2-8-2 converted 5275, at centre. The forlorn steam engines stand starkly against the turquoise sky awaiting their fate with a faint hope of resurrection.
An excellent example of the work of this well-known Welsh Railway and Industrial Genre artist born in Goodwicke 1944. Laurence Roche studied at Swansea College of Art 1962-65 and Edinburgh College of Art until 1968; he was President of Guild of Railway Artists 1998-2002 and Industrial Genre artist in Residence at Allied Steel & Wire. He is also known for his coastal seaside landscapes.
The striking painting is displayed within a dark slate coloured mount which unfortunately has water stains to the edges in places and will probably require replacement depending on personal requirements. There is no marking to the painting.
The plain softwood frame is in good sturdy condition with gilt inner edge and light scuffing in places. Hardboard backing board secured by nails and sealed with gummed framing tape.
Title "The End of the Line" and "Laurence Roche, 1976" in the artist's black ink handscript along the top edge and "Laurence Roche" likewise in the lower rh edge of the backing board. No other visible script. Water staining in places.

Two figures and a camel near the pyramids, Egypt, gouache monochrome study on paper, signed Frank Holme, c1920. Framed.
Egyptian landscape study.
The gouache painting is in very good condition with good monochrome colour tones and no damage or marking. The scene depicts the group at dawn with the approaching sunrise casting shadow from the pyramids and creating a mist obscuring the horizon. The monochrome study skillfully captures the gradation of line and form in the interaction of the pyramidic features as they blend into the darkness and the stark silhouette of the sparse date palms. The observer is then drawn to the figures and solitary camel standing in the island of stones and desert scrub which appears to be floating in a sea of sand. The artist's signature Frank Holme is written in paint in his usual style in the lower rh corner. Examination of the signature probably explains the frequent association of Frank Holme with Frank Holmes due to the commonly seen extended twirl of the final "e" in Holme which in many cases looks like the formation of a full/partial "s" . In my case I believe the two artists are the same person but I will retain the separate listings to conform with international art data-bases. It is interesting to note that some listings refer to John Francis Holme (1846/68-1904) aka Frank Holme although I think this would put him too far back into 19thC to be possible based on the condition and style of his many works (Orientalist and British landscapes).
The painting is displayed in a new slate coloured mount which is in very good condition and complements the work very well. It apppears that the new mount has been added to the original frame in recent years. The original gilt painted wooden frame is in good condition with scuffing in places. The original wooden backing board is secured by points and sealed with gummed framing tape. No visible script. The original Boots Picture Framing label with ref. number 4441/1 540 and Frame Handling Advisory note have been retained from the original backing-sheet and gummed to the lower edge of the backing board. Hanging cord attached to metal lugs.
An interesting Orientalist study.

The painting is displayed within a granite coloured conservation mount which is also in good condition. The gilt frame is in good condition with light scratching in places and backed with a hardboard sheet. The gouache painting is very colourful and in good condition. The artist's signature is in the lower rh corner. The painting is an impressionst style landscape view from the roadside across Lake Huron to Penetang.
The frame is an ornate, machine carved, glazed wooden frame.
There are no signs of damage or foxing although there has been some ingress of dust which has settled under the glass and casts shadows onto the painting - this can be cleaned when opening the frame. The back of the frame is plain wood with wooden backing board held in place by old headless nails and covered with brown paper sheet.
There is an old Exhibition label fixed to the top lh corner which states "Birmingham Exhibition (1939) Name of Artist Elizabeth C. Adam Address 3 Newnham Rd, Edgbaston 16 Title of Work Road to Penetang. Lake Huron Canada No. on Schedule 1". See the photo below. 2 eye-hooks and wire attached.
An interesting gouache painting with the advanatge of above exhibition label.
