Dusting to edges. A very interesting historical publication enhanced by the Schofield's blind embossment.

Condition/Notes : Fair (this particularly relates to the missing artists' self-portraits, otherwise the condition would be described as quite good). The front maroon half morocco board is in fair condition with wear to edges, corners and a water-stain in the centre over the gilt title. Back board is in better condition with general wear but no staining to face. Spine is in quite good condition with wear top and tail and to ribs; gilt title. Binding good and secure. Front e/p black with Ex Libris Eugene Byford Okarma label with emblem and number 187 in pencil attached upper centre. e/p black facing. Blank pp with small tear lower edge. Title page facing with full details - see images below. Heavy duty pages good with toning to edges. Binding tight. General light usage. Gilt top edge, rough-cut fore-edge and lower edge. Excellent illustrations throughout. Despite the missing plates, the volume is still of great interest and value.
This is a very heavy volume.

The Jurigraph commences with first edition March 1922 No 26 Vol 3 with gloss colour photo of Alice Terry; verso full page colour advertisement for "The Wild Animal Serial Supreme" with Elmo Lincoln in "Adventures of Tarzan" 15 Electrifying Episodes with full details. Back board similar with scratching to face. The spine has losses top and tail with 10mm of binding revealed. Rubbing and light creasing to face with wear to gilt lettering. Rubbing to edges. Condition/Notes : The volume is in quite good condition. The dark burgundy morocco front board has wear to edges, wear and bumps to corners, wear and rubbing to the face. The board has gilt decorated outer and blind stamped inner decoration. Back board is similar condition. The spine has wear top and tail, wear to edges with surface split rh edge to front board and lh edge wear but fully intact to back board. Front board slightly loose but not detached with paste-down/front e/p fully intact. Gilt decorated ribs and gilt lettering. Front paste-down and e/p marbled. Split between e/p and pp but intact. pp has handwritten ink presentation script to an old workman in his father's employ dated Oct 27th 1882. Original sales invoice dated July 30th 1977 from Richard Lally Ltd., Putney, for amount £17-00. Frontispiece follows with full plate engraving of Brittania. Title page follows (see image below) with full details; verso blank with creasing and some foxing. Dedication follows to Prince of Wales from G.F. Raymond with similar creasing and some light foxing. Book I commences on p5. According to the Instructions to the Binder, a Map of Great Britain should be facing p5 but this is missing and there is no sign of it having been detached so it could be this was omitted by the Binder. The pages are generally good and clean with light usage marks but there are a few pages with small tears and some tape repair. The engraved plates are good. There is light foxing throughout the volume. Toning and dusting to the page borders. The binding is quite tight. Similar (to front board) internal surface split between back e/p and preceding pp but fully intact and not loose. Mottled edges. Overall, a fascinating and rare First Edition of this historical work.

Corners reinforced with 95mm x 95mm calf which is worn to the board on edges. 70mm wide calf border lh edge to spine which is rubbed and worn at the edges with marking to face. Back board very similar with similar wear. The calf spine with five ribs has wear and rubbing top and tail, 15mm split from top rh edge down spine and 25mm split from top lh edge down spine. This is calf outer only and does not affect binding. Wear and rubbing full length both edges. Gilt title and "Illustrated" with decorations to ribs. Pale lemon paste-down and front e/p, both blank with usage marks. Some movement to front board but calf intact. Front e/p verso blank off-white with "Bound by Hering 9 Newman St" top lh corner; pp's blank; verso 2nd with full page engraved drawing. Facing title page with full details as listed in above description. Dated 1844 (M.DCCC.XL.IV). Verso printer's details. Frontispiece follows with full page engraved drawing by H.C. Memoir of the author commences with woodcut illustration, (Each page is divided into two sections and numbered individually i.e. number i and ii comprises page 1 but no page numbers) and memoir numbered i-xvi including a fac-simile of Bunyan's signature taken from his will. Biographical Notice follows numbers xvii-xxviii with six woodcuts. Author's apology for this book follows. Full page engraved outline drawing follows titled Christian Meditates his Departure, numbered 1, followed by two more full page drawings, numbered 2 and 3. The Pilgrim's Progress commences with first page containing the two sections numbered 3 and 4 (3 not written on first half) and so continues in this manner with the next drawing nr 4, through to the last page section number 90. The drawings are more complex in numbering as sub-number II follows 4 through to sub-number V, then nr 5, followed by VI to IX, then nr 6 - 9, then X, then nr 10, then XI, then nr 11-12, then XII, then nr 13-14, then XIII, then nr 15, then XIV, then nr 16-17, then XV -XVII, then nr 18, then XVIII, then nr 19, then XIX, then nr 20-21, then XX and final nr 22 Christian and Hopeful ascend into the Celestial City. pp blank and back e/p blank verso pale lemon facing same paste-down. Pages generally good with light toning to edges and some spots in places. Binding quite tight and fully intact as per numbering system. Edges gilt.

A fascinating glimpse into life in 1928's West End. Condition of the pages is generally quite good but there are some marks and creasing in places and general usage.
