Squally Highland (or possibly Ullswater) Landscape with Sheep and Figures, watercolour on paper, signed W.H. Pigott 1873. Framed, unglazed.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper painting depicts a Highland landscape (or possibly Ullswater) with grazing sheep and cattle, a shepherd with his dog and a figure on horseback, with an approaching storm at dusk. The sky is a menacing swirl of dark clouds which are releasing their rain in squalls as they move over the mountains towards the  pastures in the foreground; a patch of light is breaking through the cloud to the rh side of the large tree and this adds relief to the otherwise dark sky. This atmospheric theme was a favourite subject of this artist and can be seen in several of his works. The painting is signed in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual hand and dated 1873. Interestingly, this work appears to be the same location as the oil painting by William Henry Pigott titled Highland Cattle Beside a Loch sold at Tennants Auctions Nov 2012 (sheep substituted for cattle). The work is displayed within a cream coloured mount which is undulated due to the missing glazing; the edge of the paper base has been covered with framing tape upto the edge of the painting and secured to the inside of the mount with more tape in places. The basic gilt contemporary frame is backed with a thin sheet of MDF board secured with flexible lugs attached to the frame. There is also slight vertical undulation to the paper base but this will be corrected by reframing the painting in a new mount sandwich. The work is typical of William H. Pigott having the characteristic ingredients of  animals in landscape but without  a landmark. A very detailed study depicting an unusual and difficult subject which has been effectively and skillfully executed.

St. Angelo from Customs House steps with boats, watercolour on card, maritime landscape, titled and signed Jos Galea Malta, c1950. Framed.

The watercolour study of the Grand Harbour Malta is in good condition with good colour; there is very light creasing to the paper/board support in lh quarter sky and upper rh quarter adjacent to support upper edge but these can be reduce by reframing with appropriate mount board. Also a very small surface scuff to the paper/board support to the lh side of the lh bollard near the lower edge of the card support - this is not noticeable in normal viewing. There is also some vertical rippling of the support card which can also be eliminated by correct reframing. This popular view has been depicted many times by the Galea family but this is a very early version by Joseph Galea c1950. Signed Jos Galea Malta in fading black paint in the lower rh corner in his usual very distinctive style. There are four pin holes, one near each corner of the support, which secured the card during painting. The work is titled in the artist's handscript, in pencil, "St. Angelo from Customs House steps" on the backing mount below the lh lower edge of the painting. The painting has been lightly gummed to the stone coloured backing mount and is displayed directly below the glazing of the ebonized wooden frame as was the practice in the early to mid 20thC.

The ebonized wooden frame is typical of the period and is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing in places. Hardboard backing board is secured by arrow points and sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. Two small auction house labels with ref numbers attached  to rh side of backing board. Cord attached to two screw-eyes.

Reframing or upgrading existing frame (to retain period ebonized frame) with appropriate mount board to eliminate rippling and protect painting from contact with the glazing recommended.

Please view the images. Please note there are reflections in glazing and the crease in support is exaggerated by the glazing in photo and is not so noticeable in reality.

Still-life study of fruit and flowers on a table, watercolour on paper, signed by George Walter Harris (1835-1912), dated 1908. Framed and glazed with a presentation letter verso.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour study of fruit and flowers on a table is a luscious picture of fruit at its zenith, ready to be plucked from the table and eaten. The pith can almost be peeled away from the orange and the russet apple typical of English country fare. The painting is very well executed and is typical of the work of G.W. Harris. The painting is in good condition and the colours vibrant as if painted yesterday indicating that it has been well maintained for over 100 years. There are a few small marks to the rh side of and above the central peach but it is difficult to tell whether on the painting or on the inside of the glazing. They are not particularly noticeable in normal viewing. There are no other noticeable defects. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower rh area in his usual manner and dated 1908 which means he painted this in his 73rd year. The dark background is typical of this style of study and reminiscent of the works of Barbaro/Dudley. The original ebonized wooden frame is in good condition but with light scratching in places commensurate with its age. Glazing is clear. The back of the frame is covered with a board nailed in position and covered with worn dark backing paper with marking to the surface. A very interesting aspect of this painting is the letter attached to the back and dated Jan. 8th. 1919 from Sir Merton and Lady Russell - Cotes to the Pickfords. The letter reads : East Cliff Hall, Bournemouth. To / Our dear old friends Mr. and Mrs. Pickford, from Sir Merton and Lady Russell - Cotes, as a souvenir of the 1st of February, being the 59th anniversary of our wedding day and the opening of the Russell - Cotes Art Gallery and MUseum by H.R.H. Princess Beatrice. Jan. 8th. 1919. The gallery and museum, of course, are still in operation today. 2 old screw eyes are attached. Overall, a very interesting still-life study greatly enhanced by the provenance attached.

Sultan Ahmet Camii, the Blue Mosque, Istanbul, watercolour on paper, signed Talat (Ahmet Talat). c1900. Framed and glazed in original gilt frame.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper study of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul is in good condition with good colour. There is a 70mm vertical light surface crease to the paper base to the rh side of the rh minaret  but this is only noticeable under close examination and does not detract from the image. There are also a few very small light foxing spots in the sky above the mosque and a few in the water but again they are not noticeable in normal viewing. The original pencil sketch can be seen in places especially the walls to the rh side and the minarets. The study depicts a peaceful image of the Sultan Ahmet Camii as viewed from the Sea of Marmara and is signed Talat to the lower rh corner. The painting is displayed in the original mottled gilt frame which has a few small chips to the face in places but is generally in good sturdy condition. The frame is backed with a period acid board which is secured by lightly rusted nails and sealed with old gummed tape which has been torn in places around the frame edges. A white label is attched to lower edge which states "Sultan Ahmet Camii on the shore of the Marmara Sea Istanbul Turkey. Ottoman built 1609-1616 founded by Sultan Ahmet I Unusually has 6 minarets". Above the label is written in pencil handscript "Philip gave us this picture when he moved out of the flat above us at 96 Green Dragon Lane in 1976" - a North London district. Condition/Notes : Very good. The watercolour on paper study is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The study depicts the very well-known Cairo landmark Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa viewed from an adjacent building (probably the Citadel) with the city skyline and sandy coloured sky beyond. The dominant colour of the study is terracotta but the variations created by the setting sun give a wider range to the overall scene resulting in a pleasing balance. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower rh corner in his distinctive style. Displayed beneath a cream coloured mount with single line surround; mount in good condition. There are a few light marks beneath the glazing which can be cleaned on opening the frame if considered necessary. The contemporary mahogany style frame with gilt inner edge is in good condition with light scuffing in places; hardboard backing board secured by panel pins and sealed with framing tape. Label attached upper centre with title "View over Cairo" in ink handscript; serial numbers in  handscript lower rh corner. The frames have been re-backed with hardboard secured by points and sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. The original framer's labels have been gummed to the backing boards "T. The Black Gate, Castle Garth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, watercolour and graphite on paper, faintly signed initials WJM, William James Muller. c1835.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour and graphite study of the Black Gate at Castle Garth is in good condition with slight colour fading. There is a light surface abrasion at the top centre edge above the rh side of the uppermost window and on the rh edge at the mount window above the first small shop's shelter, but these are not noticeable in normal viewing. The painting is titled CASTLE at the top rh corner in light handscript and there is indistinct light script to the left of this. The study depicts the ancient gateway to Garth Castle in Newcastle-upon-Tyne c1835 when according to historical records the building was reduced to a slum dwelling accommodating about 12 families, small shops and a public house and led through to the trading street inside the castle grounds. This was a typical subject studied by the artist who produced many drawings and paintings of historical social observation, such as the Bristol riots, and studies of architecture and picturesque historical buildings all over the country and the Middle East. The frame was opened for internal examination revealing the following : The painting is displayed within an off-white mount board sandwich which is hinged on the lh edge; the painting is hinged at the top edge to the base mount board. Verso display window mount is inscribed Manning B 7588 (possibly the framer's customer reference) and verso painting is inscribed Black Gate in ink handscript. The sandwich base mount verso is inscribed six in a circle. (See these images below). There is a faint signature in initials WJM in the lower rh corner of the painting which is concealed by the mount board. There is no other visible script on the mount boards and the frame has been resealed. The mount boards are in good clean condition with toning to the window cut edges. The standard wooden frame is in sturdy condition with scuffing and chipping to edges. Frame backing board is secured with old panel pins sealed with old gummed tape - this has been resealed with new gummed tape leaving visible any script. On the upper edge is written in handscript William James Muller 1812-1845. Along the lh edge is stencilled in ink 625 RB. Several numbers are written in ink 10877, 18656, 2, 72, and dates in chalk 178, 182, 16 July 68 and 12 Dec 67. Overall, a very interesting historical painting depicting the actual condition of the Black Gate c1835 as the associated buildings were demolished in the late 19th century when the Society of Antiquaries leased and rehabilitated the structure in 1883; they still occupy the building to this day.

The Crucifixion, copied from old painting on parchment dated 1666 in the Soanes Museum Lincoln's Inn Fields London, watercolour on card heightened in gold, signed and inscribed verso, c1880. Signed in pencil verso upper rh corner, inscribed and signed R.C. Whiteside in faded ink.

Condition/Notes : Good. The Crucifixion study depicting Christ on the cross with Mary, Mary Magdalene and Saint John in attendance is in good condition with good colour and no damage; description verso states "Copied from old painting on parchment dated 1666 in the Soanes Museum Lincoln's Inn Fields London" signed R.C. Whiteside. There does not appear to be a signature on the painting but there is very faint marking to lower rh edge which when viewed under magnification could be script (she was a miniature painter).  The painting is displayed beneath a gilt mount which is in good condition. The ebonized wooden frame with faded gilt painted inner edge and adjacent surrounding border is in sturdy condition with light scuffing in places. Remnants of the original dust-sheet are attached in places verso, previously removed at some time to reveal the inscription on the card support; card base has been gummed at the four corners to the gilt mount board held in place by four old headless pins. Remnants of old printed news-sheet can be seen which had been gummed to the inner edges of the wooden frame window and probably used as an inner backing for the painting beneath the dust-sheet. The card base has been signed R.C. Whiteside in pencil in the upper rh corner, dated 1666 in faded blue crayon in the upper lh corner and inscribed as above in faded black ink, signed below R.C. Whiteside.  White printed reference label attached to top lh corner of the frame. Original brass hanging ring attached frame upper centre.

R. Cordelia Whiteside is a listed miniature and portrait painter known to have exhibited between 1890 and 1908 at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and the Royal Academy London, the daughter of  the Victorian oil painter H.J. Whiteside.

An interesting work which may benefit from further research.

The watercolour on card is in good condition with good colours and no damage. The study depicts an errant Poodle having free-run of a classical English garden. The garden style is typical of the 1920's.

Unfortunately unsigned; further examination of the card support has not found any script other than what appears to be a framer's reference number 52779 along the upper edge of the support border. Card support appears acid card which typically used early 20thC.

The painting is displayed within a cream coloured mount which is likewise in very good condition; painting attached by four strips of tape to the mount board.

The Fish Market at Dieppe, pen, ink and watercolour on paper, indistinctly signed and titled. c1880. 19th C Continental School. Framed and glazed.

Imperial : Frame : 12-3/4" 14-3/4" x 3/4". Image : 6" x 8-1/4".

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper study of the Fish Market at Dieppe is in quite good condition with quite good colour; there is some light foxing in places to the sky and to the foreground but it doesn't detract from the work. The study depicts the fish market at Dieppe with customers inspecting the fish  and bargaining for the price; fishing boats landing on the shore. The study based on a pen and ink sketch uses a minimal range of colours to capture the gradation of tones on an autumnal day. A popular subject studied by many well-known artists such as Philippe Rousseau and Eugene Isabey. Initially thought to be unsigned, closer examination has revealed quite faint indistinct script on the centre lower edge which includes "NIM" in capitals - in the hope of finding more script verso the frame was opened but without any significant findings. The paper support  has been gummed to an acidic board and then gummed to the mount in the manner of the time; framer's reference number inscribed in pencil 460/1/31 and what appears to be customer's collection details. Following general cleaning the frame was resealed. (See the images below). The study is displayed within a heavy off-white mount, which is in good condition with toning to the window edges, with a horizontal cut out section below the image revealing the original title in ink. The gilt machine decorated frame is in good sturdy condition with small chips in places; plywood backing board secured by old panel pins and sealed with gummed tape. Boots Picture Framing Department label attached to lower edge with same reference number in pencil. Rings and wire attached.

The Old Bridge, Lady Bay, Nottingham, watercolour, pen and ink, signed Wm. Fred Austin, c1870. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour, pen and ink painting of The Old Bridge, Lady Bay, Nottingham, is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The painting depicts the old bridge at Lady Bay with several figures and a horse and rider  crossing the bridge. This bridge is not to be confused with the present day Lady Bay Bridge which is an iron bridge originally constructed for the Midland Railway crossing the River Trent. Further research is required to ascertain the actual location of this Lady Bay Bridge and any updates will be added to this description. An interesting point is that a very similar painting by F. Mayfield (dimensions 246mm x 346mm) entitled The Old Bridge, Lady Bay, Nottingham, dated 1862, is in the Rushcliffe Borough Council Art Collection and can be viewed at the following link :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/the-old-bridge-lady-bay-nottingham-47997 (latest update to url)

Note : The above painting was sold at auction 26.11.2015.

The Mayfield painting is an oil, very similar dimensions, depicting the bridge at a slightly different angle and amazingly even having the same sign on a pole at the rh side of the bridge in front of the house. Based on the date 1862 of this painting, c1870 is probably a little late as there are no noticeable structural changes in the two images apart from the window of the house which has changed slightly.

The painting is signed Wm. Fred Austin in black ink in the lower rh corner and the beginning of the date is below the signature but unfortunately obscured by the mount board. The title "Lady bay Bridge Nottingham" is written in black ink handscript by the artist in the lower lh corner. Note that he has written Lady Bay as one word Ladybay which may have been the convention at that time.  The painting is displayed within  a"Moorland" green lined mount which is in good condition with toning to the window cut edges which complements the colour of the vegetation in the painting. The title Lady Bay Bridge, Nottingham, is printed in white paint on the lower lh edge  of the mount and the artist's name William Fred Austin on the lower rh edge. The gilt wooden frame is in quite good condition with a 2mm surface chip on the lower lh corner and another 2mm chip on the lower edge along with light general wear. The frame is closed with a card backing board secured by arrow points and sealed with 95mm brown paper which has detached in places. An old label is attached at the top edge which states "Valuer and Art Consultant. Thomas Turner. Works of Art Established 1863. 265, Mansfield Road, Nottingham. Telephone Nottm. 45333". Another old label is attached at the lower edge which states "William Frederick Austin. Topographical Artist. Working circa 1870. Many of his works have been published and in the Nottm. Castle Museum there is a drawing of Lady Bay Bridge from the other side". This is interesting provenance and combining this with the aforementioned Mayfield painting of the same scene attaches much local historical importance to this painting. Old rings and cord attached.

The Old Mill, Louth, Lincolnshire, watercolour on paper, signed C.E. Donner and dated 1922 in the lower rh corner. Also titled "Old Mill Louth" underlined, in brown paint in the lower lh corner.

The study of the well-known Mill and associated buildings in Louth is in good condition with strong colours and no damage or foxing. The painting is detailed and of historic interest. The artist is well-known for his pastoral English landscapes and has signed and titled the work in his usual printed style.

The work is displayed below a cream coloured mount board with a light olive green painted window edge which complements the watercolours. The mount is in good condition but with dusting and toning in places although this can be cleaned on opening the frame.

The original wooden frame with dark brown veneer, faded gilt to the inner edges, is in quite good condition with light scuffing in places and sturdy structure. The original heavy card backing board is secured by old rusty nails and is inscribed in pencil "Old Garden Gladstone Park" and signed below CE Donner in the same hand. The original dark brown dust-sheet has been opened along the rh edge to reveal the above script. Very faint pencil script to the upper lh corner of the dust-sheet which appears to be a copy of the script written on the backing board as described above.

A very interesting historical work.

The Peaks, Dartmoor, watercolour and gouache, signed D.H. Pinder, c1920.

Original glazed frame.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour and gouache on paper study of The Peaks on Dartmoor is in good condition with good colour and no marking or damage. The study is considered to be of Staple Tor near Tavistock although this is subject to further research - he was living in Horrabridge around this time. The painting is signed D.H. Pinder in the lower rh corner in somewhat smaller capital letters than his often signed larger capitals although in the same distinctive script.

Displayed within period gilt mount with gilt core which is in good condition; titled in black ink print "The Peaks, Dartmoor. D.H. Pinder" lower centre. The original gilt wooden frame with decorative moulded edges is in sturdy condition but with a few surface scratches and some losses in places. The old dust-sheet is torn in places and the ground backing card can be seen attached (gummed) to the backing board which is secured by rusty panel pins. No visible script or labels.

An interesting study by this well-known West Country artist noted for his studies of Dartmoor and Egyptian scenes.
