A cold winter landscape study, impasto oil on board, signed Joan Peet. c1975.

The impasto oil study is in good condition with good colour and no damage.

The study depicts a winter landscape with trees and snow covered fields and a path leading to a distant copse. The scene is cold and stark and the heavy pale blue clouded sky is loaded with moisture about to become snow; an English winter captured at the point of precipitation in the late afternoon.

The location of this landscape is probably the Sleaford district of Lincolnshire as the artist is known to have connections to the area.

The painting is signed in brown paint, Joan Peet, in the lower rh corner in her usual style.

The work is displayed within a faded gilt wooden frame, deeply recessed with a cream coloured wooden inner edge surrounded by stone coloured linen. The frame is of sound construction with light scuffing in places. The hardboard base/backing board is secured by headless nails and sealed with framing tape which has detached from the board in places. Hanging cord attached to rings. No visible script.

An interesting study by this well-known English artist.

Arabs in Conversation in a Ruined Temple, oil on wooden panel, signed W. Muller 43. 1843. Orientalist.

Oil on wooden panel, signed and dated. Dimensions : 205mm x 165mm x 6mm. Weight : 0.220kg net. Condition : Quite good.

"Arabs in Conversation in a Ruined Temple", oil on wooden panel, signed W. Muller (William James Muller), dated 43 (1843). Labels verso.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The oil on wood panel is in quite good condition with good colour. The study depicts a group of Arabian characters sat in conversation with hookahs and other standing figures in an Islamic style building with surrounding structures and trees probably within the confines of a mosque.

Muller spent 1843 in Lycia working with the British Government expedition so this study could well be in that region of Turkey.

There is no significant paint loss apart from a few small spots near the top edge and the upper rh edge, probably caused by abrasion from a previous frame, but there is significant craqueleur all over the painting but this is stable. The painting has been lightly varnished.

The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner in his usual manner with the date 43 below. There is a small bump at the lower lh corner of the panel and an 8mm abrasion on the upper lh edge 15mm down from the top lh corner. The panel is in good structural condition.

Verso has considerable marking from previous frame tape which has been applied and removed at various times again confirming that the painting was previously framed. There are also impression marks to the edges in places where nails have been positioned. There is stencilled in black ink across the lower quarter "4 O S  B G" . In the centre is an old faded label with indistinct handscript "..................................Arabs in conversation in a ...........ruined temple  William Muller £25-0-0".  £25-0-0 is written again in black ink below the label. Above the label is written again the same text with a space left between "in a" ....and ..."ruined temple" for the indistinct word. William Muller written below. There also appears to be more handscript in faded blue ink below the above but it is unreadable. Any further interpretation of the script will be added.

Overall, a very interesting work of this well known Bristol School artist which ties in well with his recorded biographical details.

Arc de Triomphe, Paris, oil on board, unsigned. c1990. Framed. Impressionist study of the Parisian landmark.

Condition/Notes : This Impressionist study of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees is depicting a late 19th Century Parisian street scene. The condition of the painting is very good and the colours are very good. The style is typical of the age and has been well executed presenting an interesting and vibrant image of the French Capital at that time. The images are well presented and there is a sense of movement and energy in the study. This contemporary interpretation of the scene is classical in its presentation but unfortunately unsigned - at least within the visible area.

The modern style wooden frame complements the painting and is professionally fitted. The back of the frame is closed with a sheet of hardboard, secured and sealed with framing tape. Rings and cord attached. There is no visible script. An interesting and pleasant painting.

Imperial : Frame : 17-1/2" x 24" x 7/8". Image : 12" x 19".

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on canvas study of Aston Cross is based on the similar work by Eric Bottomley and is in good condition with good colour and no damage; there are a few small flecks of white paint in places in the lower rh quarter. The scene depicts the famous Birmingham landmark with the iconic Ansell's New Brewery building dominating the study and the pre-1953 tram network in operation. The main difference between this work and that of Bottomley's is the predominantly blue theme  which is accentuated in this study and results in a well balanced work. The painting is signed Guzzardi in the lower rh corner and is displayed within an "antique white" mount which is in good condition with light toning to window's cut edges.

The standard antique gilt contemporary frame is in good condition with light scuffing; backing board secured with multiple points and sealed with gummed framing tape. Cord attached to backing board. No visible script.

An interesting topographical study of historical interest.

The oil painting depicts a Bavarian mountain scene with a schloss and hamlet on the banks of the river. The known artist Arthur Dodsley has signed the painting A Dodsley in his usual style in the lower lh corner and the date 57 (1957) below the signature (See the images). The impasto style of the landscape is typical of the artist's work.

Displayed within a gilt decorated wooden frame which is in good condition. The board base is secured by old rusty nails and sealed with Kraft type dust-sheet gummed to the frame. Old auction house reference labels attached but no name. Hanging wire attached to screw-eyes.

British Clipper Ship "Cutty Sark" under way, oil on canvas, signed Rob Milliken 1966. Framed. Ship Portrait.

Condition/Notes : The oil on canvas study of the British Clipper Ship "Cutty Sark" is in good condition with good colour. There is a small area of stabilized paint loss 55mm long by 10mm - 1mm in the top lh corner along the edge but this is not noticeable and blends into the cloudy sky. There is also a degree of stabilized light craqueleur to the paint surface in places but again this is not noticeable. The style can be described as impasto although this is particularly applicable to the sea-horses and full-sails and to a lesser degree the clouds. The painting is signed Rob Milliken 66 in the lower lh corner and titled "Cutty Sark" in the same hand.

The original, heavy, white painted, wooden frame with inner fabric surround is  in quite good condition with scuffing and scratching in places. The stretcher is nailed to the frame and the canvas stapled in places; "Cutty Sark" is written in pencil top lh corner of the canvas with artist's signature and Oct 1966 below. Old cord attached.

Capri Viewed from Sorrento Peninsula with Fishing Boat at Dusk, oil on canvas, titled Capri and signed Costanzi (Nicola Costanzi). c1920. Framed and glazed.

Imperial : Frame : 13" x 15" x 1-1/4". Image : 8" x 10-1/4".

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The impasto oil on canvas study of Capri is in quite good condition with good colour; there are two small areas of paint loss - 2mm x 1mm to rh side of the boat and 3mm x 2mm in the sky top rh corner. These two areas of loss are very small and unnoticeable as the colour of the canvas support blends in with the ambient colours. The study is a popular view of Capri as seen from the Sorrento Peninsula but is particularly attractive with the moonlight at dusk reflecting on the sea  giving a sense of motion to the incoming light swell; the fishermen in the boat add another interest to the scene. The impression of the stretcher can be lightly seen at 15mm from the edges of the painting and another horizontal line about 3mm from the upper edge. The painting is signed in paint Costanzi and titled Capri lower rh corner.  Displayed within a gilt painted spacer which is secured to the outer wooden glazed frame which has brass decorated veneer attached to face. The canvas support is nailed to an old wooden stretcher and attached to the spacer by a screw each side; edges around stretcher sealed with gummed brown paper. No visible script. Screw-eyes and wire attached. Two small white reference labels attached. The glazing is clear although there is dusting and marking between glazing and spacer which can be cleaned by removing the spacer.

Clipper Ship in a Following Sea, oil on board, signed P.E. George, c1950. Framed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on board work depicts a classical clipper ship in a following sea with white-horses. There is no damage to the painting and the colours are good with no paint loss. The painting emphasizes  the elegant sleek design of the ship as she glides unhindered through the breaking waves and rolls majestically to the swell of the ocean. Several crew members can be seen on deck as a wave breaks over the port midships. The clouds are reflecting the setting sun and this is caught by the rigging and taut canvas. The painting is signed P.E. George in the lower rh corner. The heavy wooden frame is in fair condition with scuffing to the face and edges revealing previous coats of pale green paint. The board base is nailed in several places to the frame and has been covered with a faded decorated paper backing sheet which is torn and detached in places. Two old rusty hanging rings are attached. No labels or script. The painting will benefit from reframing. Framed or unframed shipping options available.

Condition/Notes : Good.  The oil on hardboard study of a conversation between a gentleman and an Israeli businessman with the proprietor watching over, is in good condition with good colour and no damage or paint loss. The scene is austere and the environment minimalist with the conversation the only point of the study although the watching figure brings an element of intrigue into the composition. Impasto work emphasizes the harshness of the structures surrounding the figures and adds a sense of decay and insecurity to the scene reflecting the unseen environage beyond. The painting is signed in the lower rh corner and dated 1970. Original plain recessed wooden frame ; hardboard base nailed in position. Screw-eyes and cord attached.

Allen in the lower rh corner but is undated; based on similar works by this artist this work is estimated c1920. The glazed machine carved oak frame is in good condition with light scuffing to edges. The Birchmore Board base is secured by several old nails and the original dust-sheet has been removed at some time leaving the centre section still gummed to the board obscuring the manufacturer's stamp; George Rowney's Birchmore Board was popular at the turn of the century. Old screw-eyes attached.

Family Conversation on a Street leading to Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo, Egypt, oil on canvas nailed to wooden stretcher, signed Max Arnold, dated 1922.

The oil on canvas orientalist study is in quite good condition with quite good colours. There is general surface dust accumulation and light spot/marking in places, particularly the sky area. This will benefit from general cleaning. There are also a few small tears to the canvas support, the largest being a 20mm vertical tear on the lower edge to the lh side of the signature and a 6mm wide tear on the ankle of the seated figure; the remainder being very small surface holes which are not noticeable in normal viewing. The painting is signed Max Arnold in brown paint with the date 1922 below the signature.

The study is particularly interesting  depicting the Haret el Yahood quarter of Al-Azhar district in the 1920's with typical hanging sunshade awnings above the small stores and work-shops. The scene is dominated by the minaret of the Al-Azhar mosque and the shadow of the dome, with birds in flight around the balcony.

This work is in Max Wechsler Arnold's pre-impressionist style, confirmed by the dated signature 1922, prior to his influence by the German Expressionist movement following his graduation in 1920 at the Fine Arts School in Iasi Romania. He travelled in Europe and the Orient before studying in Germany and Italy where he changed his style. He was born and died in Romania although he worked all over Europe and the Orient. He is known to sign his work Max W. Arnold, Max Arnold, Max Wechsler, Arnold and Max Wexler.

The painting is nailed to the original wooden stretcher which has framer's pencil script in places.

Fujisan at Sunset from Shizu-ura, oil on board, signed Shou-yama c1950. Framed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on board study of Fujiyama at Sunset viewed from the beach at Shizu-ura is in good condition with good colours and no damage. There is a slight surface crease to the base which runs horizontally from above the lh side of the peak in the sky down intermittently to the mid-lower edge of the painting but it is not noticeable in normal viewing.  The scene is a very popular view of Mount Fuji from the coastal resort of Shizu-ura and captures the often seen over-hanging Japanese pine tree from the cliff above the beach; the setting sun illuminates the snow-capped peak of Fujisan and illuminates the distant blue haze on the lower slopes of the volcano. An iconic sacred image listed in the World Heritage List and worshipped throughout Japan; at 3776m Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.

Titled Shizu-ura in the lower rh corner and signed with the seal of artist Shou-yama below the title.

The painting is displayed in the original heavy ebonized frame with gilt wood slips; marking and scuffing to the edges and some areas of missing moulding/veneer revealing the wooden frame beneath. Heavy wooden backing board secured with numerous old rusting nails sealed with gummed tape which has torn and desiccated in places.  No visible script. The backing board does not appear to have been removed as much of the original gummed tape is still sealed and unbroken hence there is a possibility of script within.

Note there is some marking on the inside of the glazing.

An interesting study in traditional style of this iconic subject.
