Portrait study of Amy Barbaro in an Orange Grove wearing her characteristic headscarf and gold ear-ring, watercolour on paper, signed G. Barbaro. Framed.

The portrait study is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking; there are a few very light foxing spots in places. The original pencil sketch outline can be seen lightly in a few places e.g. shoulder above blouse.

This study has been executed in several variations during the period prior to and shortly after the artist's marriage to Amy Dawson between 1897 and 1901. Further details of their relationship can be viewed in the biographical extracts at the following link : Giovanni Barbaro . This particular study has also been the basis for a series of colour postcard publications  under the title "Mediterranean Maidens" published by Stewart & Woolf, London E.C., Series 559, c1909 (more details at this link : Mediterranean Maidens ). It is interesting to note that the artist has signed the painting G. Barbaro which is consistent with the signatures on his other portrait studies in contrast to his typical Giovanni Barbaro signature on his earlier landscapes albeit in the same characteristic manner.

The painting is displayed within a multi-lined white coloured mount which is in good condition. The gilt, marbled style frame with inner edge beading is also in good condition; heavy cardboard backing board secured by staples and sealed with self-adhesive framing tape.

A classic Barbaro work particularly interesting as it portrays Amy in her early 30's and can be compared to earlier portraits of Amy in her mid-20's in the same location. Portraits of Amy are particularly sought after.

* Please note, that a similar study of Amy entitled "In an Orange Grove" was sold at auction by Dreweatts 1759 Ltd., Newbury, Berkshire, on 27.05.2021 Old Master British & European Art Auction (lot number 285) for hammer price £2,200.00 (£2,750.00 inc. comm. charges).

Watercolour study of Scarborough Outer Harbour Wall with Prawn Trawler Flowing Stream SY822 alongside at low tide with figure, dogs and gulls.

The painting is in very good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. The study is typical of the work of this well-known Norfolk artist, born 1947,  who specialises in Maritime, Marine and Landscape Genre paintings capturing the effects of light reflections in his scenes. Signed in white paint "Neil Westwood" in his usual style in the lower lh corner. The work is c1997 based on other similar works in the same region which have been dated.

The Prawn Trawler in the painting has been identified as fishing vessel Flowing Stream SY822, built in 1969 by Macduff, registered in Stornoway and fishing until 2011 when her fishing registration was cancelled.

Painting displayed within a double mount, white inner and cream coloured outer which is likewise in very good condition.

R.M.S. Moldavia (P & O Line), gouache and watercolour on paper, titled in artist's handscript and signed C.WF (Charles W. Fothergill) 1917. Framed and glazed in original. Ship Portrait.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The gouache and watercolour on paper study of R.M.S. Moldavia is in quite good condition with good strong colours and no marking or damage. There is some light surface creasing to the paper base in places, particularly the sea in the foreground, but this is not noticeable in normal viewing. The fine details of the rigging and radio antenna are in pencil but the remainder predominantly gouache with watercolour backing. Interestingly, there is no sign of the ship's name on the painting and likewise in some original photographs the name is not visible. The ship was built by Caird & Company of Greenock, for P & O and launched 28 March 1903 for the England - Australia passenger trade. In 1915 she was purchased by the Admiralty and converted to an armed merchant cruiser and troopship. On  23 May 1918 she was sunk off Beach Head by a single torpedo from submarine SM UB-57 with the loss of 56 US soldiers. The wreck is a popular diving site to this day. The painting is signed in monogram CWF to the lower rh corner and dated 1917; it is also titled in the same hand and paint along the lower edge adjacent to the frame. Close examination of the monogram reveals what appears to be C./F but from an angle the / could be part of a W and this is in common with the artist's known monogram followed by the date; the subject study is also typical of this artist's maritime work. Other interesting aspects of this study are the red cross on white pennant (number 8) on the foremast, the P & O house flag on the after-mast (even though the ship had been sold to the Admiralty in 1917) and the white structure on the coast aft of the ship. Any more details will be added in due course. The original worn gilt frame is sturdy but with scuffing to the face and chips to moulding in places; verso backed with acid board secured by old headless nails. Dust-sheet has been torn at top and side edges revealing the backing board. Framer's label attached to lower edge "John W. MIlls, 7,9,11, The Arcade, Portsmouth". Old screw-eyes and tangled wire attached. No other visible script.

Rainy July day in Japanese Village with Figures and Hydrangeas, watercolour on paper, signed Hiroshi, c1902. Original frame. East Asian.

£800.00  Shipping : UK : Free Delivery. Europe : £20.00. World : £30.00.

Rainy July day in a Japanese village with houses, two figures and hydrangeas, watercolour on paper laid to board, signed Hiroshi, c1902. Original frame, upgraded and resealed.

The watercolour study depicts a village scene with two figures carrying umbrellas in the street between four houses in a wet and humid July day. Bushes of flowering hydrangeas line the roadside and the distant mountains are shrouded in mist and clouds; a drainage dyke runs along the right-hand edge of the street and catches the eye of the viewer. There is an overpowering sense of humidity and moisture heat pervading the whole environment which is also conveyed to the viewer. The painting is signed Hiroshi in brown paint and underlined in his usual style in the lower lh corner.

There is slight toning to the paint and there is a vertical surface crease mark running from the top edge at approx 50mm in from the lh edge down through the lh brown house and through the signature to the lower edge. This crease is visible but in appropriate display conditions is not at all distracting or detrimental to the enjoyment of the work.

The original oak frame is in good structural condition with light scuffing in places.

Although Hiroshi is predominantly well-known for his paintings of popular and iconic images such as temples and shrines, this unusual rural study tends to conform more to the genre of Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) but he invariably signs his work as H. Yoshida although there is some evidence to support his use of the solitary Hiroshi. However, the strong undelining of Hiroshi is characteristic of Hiroshi's signature but the genre is certainly not typical of this artist. Hiroshi is described as a watercolour artist of the early 20thC Nihonga School who always signed his work in Western style as is Yoshida. On this basis, the price reflects the possibility that this is a work of H. Yoshida. Any further evidence will be reflected in the price.

Based on this uncertainty I have opened the frame to check for any further internal script or evidence but without success - the paper support had been laid to the backing board and no script visible. As the painting had been framed directly below the glazing, which was the practice at that time, I have upgraded the frame by adding an internal non-acidic separator between the glazing and the painting which will help prevent damage to the work and resealed the backing board.

A very enticing and atmospheric painting which captures the beauty of rural Japan in the Meiji period and illustrating the aspects of the Nihonga School.

Imperial : Frame : 11-1/4" x 19-1/2" x 3/4". Image : 8-1/4" x 16-1/2".

Condition/Notes : Good. The painting is in good condition with good colour; there are small foxing spots in the support border around the image and foxing marks to the upper border which have lightly impacted the image in the upper lh quarter. Otherwise, there are no marks  or damage to the painting. The study is very detailed and is typical of the work of this well-known Malagasy artist who flourished between 1900 and 1920. The painting is presented in his usual manner within a pencil delineated border on the paper support and displayed directly below the glazing in the recessed plain softwood frame. The frame is in good condition with backing board secured by rusting panel pins sealed with gummed framing tape; felt buffers fixed to each lower corner. Framer's label attached to lower lh corner "Cooper's The Picture Shop Picture Frame Makers 23, Copley Road Tel Doncaster  61220". Hanging cord attached.

River Thames, Greenwich Reach. A maritime study of the River Thames at Greenwich, with the Old Royal Naval College in the background, watercolour on paper, signed Michael Crawley.

The watercolour on paper study is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The study is a particularly interesting work in the artist's Pool of London series which was executed between 1960 and 1980, this study being c1968. The painting depicts a busy morning scene on the River Thames at Greenwich Reach, the marker buoy catching the eye and leading the viewer to the twin domed towers of the Old Royal Naval College, then across the many small craft and ultimately to the approaching Cutty Sark added to the scene as a retrospective reminiscence appropriate to the location. The brooding cloudy sky is oppressive as the rising sun reflects in the dust haze above the city. Signed Michael Crawley in blue ink in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual style.

The painting is displayed within a single lined stone coloured mount board which is in good condition excepting two small surface dints one below centre window edge and one above centre window edge which are not noticeable in normal viewing. The plain heavy wooden frame with gilt inner edge is in good condition with light scuffing in places. The glazing is clear but there is a light inner surface scratch which extends from the upper rh quarter edge down to the centre of the glazing - again this light scratch in the glazing is not noticeable in normal viewing. Heavy card backing board secured by nails and sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. Title label attached to lh upper corner "River Thames Greenwich Reach" in black ink in the artist's hand. Hanging wire attached to two small screw-eyes.

An interesting historical study in the River Thames, Pool of London, series of paintings by this well-known prolific English artist.

Riverside Farmyard Scene, watercolour on paper, signed Bryant. Framed and glazed. c1880.

Imperial : Frame : 21-1/2" x 17-1/4" x 3/4". Image : 13-3/4" x 10".

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour; there are, however, 2 small (1mm diameter) bore holes in the sky to the upper rh quarter which have been caused by previous insect damage and some light foxing in places. The frame has been opened and examined and can confirm that there is no current insect presence; completely cleaned and resealed with new gummed tape. Examination  revealed that the card base has been gummed to the back of the mount beyond the outer edges of the painting and this can be easily removed without damage if a future owner should wish to reframe or upgrade the frame/mount. The painting depicts a farmyard scene with baling activity and chickens feeding, a subject often portrayed by this listed artist although his works are more commonly in oils several other watercolours are recorded in his works. The original pencil sketch can be seen especially around the structures and this pencil matches the texture and density of the pencil signature in the lower rh corner - he more often signs HC Bryant but several examples of Bryant without initials are recorded. The painting is displayed within a wash-line mount which is in fair condition with some light marking and toning. The plain gilt wood and composition frame is in similar condition with light scuffing and chips in places; Kraft dust-sheet resealed with gummed tape. Cord attached. An interesting English landscape study, typical of the work of this well-listed artist who exhibited regularly between 1860 and 1880 at the R.I., R.A. and R.S.B.A.

RMS Aquitania in Southampton Water, watercolour on textured art paper, signed by the well known Southport artist John Hardy Meadows (1912-2008), dated 1977.  Framed and glazed. Heavy framed painting.

Condition/Notes : Very good. The large watercolour painting depicts RMS Aquitania in Southampton Water in a retrospective study completed during the artist's most prolific period (1970-80). The painting is in very good condition with subdued colours portraying a misty overcast Solent partly obscuring the Southampton dockside and capturing the smoke trail from the ship's stacks. There is no sign of damage or moisture. The lined buff mount board complements the painting. The mottled light gilt wooden frame is well constructed and in good condition with minimal wear. The back of the frame has been professionally sealed with fine board secured with arrow points and framing tape. There are two labels attached, one postumous which states "John Hardy Meadows  1912-2008 H.M.S. Aquatania 1977 Southampton Waters" (note the spelling mistakes) and another older label which states "J. Hardy Meadows 59a Alexandra Road Southport Merseyside PR9 9HD Watercolour R.M.S. "Aquitania" - Southampton Water £....00" (The price has been scratched away at some time). Rings and cord attached. This is a very good example of this artist's maritime art.

Please note there are reflections in the glazing. Due to the large size of the glazing there are some distortions to the image in the photographs (caused by the angle of the frame to avoid excessive reflections).

Robin Hood's Bay, near Whitby, North Yorkshire, watercolour on paper, signed by Michael Crawley.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour painting depicts the village of Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire as viewed from the cliffs above the village. The painting is in good condition with strong colours. The painting captures the isolation of the location and the natural defences of the settlement. The sky is overcast but the sun's rays are breaking through the clouds and beaming down to the foreshore. The scene is quite unusual for this well known and prolific artist whose works are predominantly centred on the English county of Derbyshire apart from his period in the United States where he created many works. The painting is signed in the artist's usual manner in the lower rh corner. The painting is displayed within a textured lined white mount which is in good condition. The simple black wooden frame is in quite good condition with wear and scratching to the edges. The back of the frame is closed with a sheet  of cardboard secured by panel pins and sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. The title -Robin Hood's Bay- is written in handscript top lh corner.

The watercolour study is in good condition with good colour; a few light foxing spots in places. There is some rippling to the paper base but this can be corrected with improved backing to the base. No visible signature.

The stark brown rocks are the focus of attention of the study but the attention is drawn to the lone sailing boat transiting from the estuary to the sea with the distant green shoreline completing the horizon.

The painting is displayed within a grey flax textured mount with light pencil scoring to the window edges and brown toning to the window cut edges. The unglazed pine wood deeply recessed frame is in good condition with light scuffing in places. Royal Yacht H.M.S. Medina (1911-12) at sea, watercolour and gouache  retrospective study on paper, signed Gerald M. Burn and dated 1917.

The study depicts H.M.S. Medina as the Royal Yacht Medina during her service in the Royal Navy for the State Visit of T.M. The King-Emperor H.M. George V and Queen Mary to the Coronation Durbar in Delhi, India, held on 2nd December 1911. Following her return to Great Britain she was returned to P & O colours for commercial passenger liner service as R.M.S. Medina.

R.M.S. Medina, steel screw steamer, Official Number 131849, was built for P & O in 1911 by Caird & Company Greenock in Westburn West Yard no. 317. She was the last "M" class vessel to be built, completed in September 1911. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy 10th October 1911 as the Royal Yacht. Following return to P & O 1st January 1912 she served as R.M.S. Medina until she was torpedoed by UB-31 3 miles ENE of Start Point on 28th April 1917 and sank with loss of 5 engine room crew; 411 passengers were rescued.

Rue de la Gazelle, Alger, signed Jar. 18. Watercolour on paper study of an Algiers Street in 1918. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour study of Rue de la Gazelle in Algiers is in good condition with good colour. The painting depicts the known street in Old Algiers which illustrates the buttressed style of building typical of the city. The Mediterranean blue sky forms a pleasing border to the top of the composition and lifts the eye above the drab surroundings of the rue. There are a few small foxing spots in the sky and there are some surface creases to the paper base near the top edge of the mount but these are not particularly noticeable in normal viewing. There is also a light residual shadow about 10mm below the mount edge which indicates that a previous smaller frame had been fitted probably to conceal the above mentioned surface creasing. Otherwise the painting is in good condition. The painting is signed in pencil in the lower lh corner "rue de la Gazelle Alger Jar. 18". The work is displayed within a hinged mount sandwich. The mount is in good condition with no toning to the window cut edges. The chalked wooden frame is in good condition with a hardboard backing board secured by lugs and sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. Screw-eyes and cord attached. No script verso.

Runswick Bay, North Yorkshire, watercolour on paper by Sam Burden. Signature not visible but probably concealed by mount.  Framed and glazed. c1985.

Condition/Notes : Very good. The watercolour study of Runswick Bay by Sam Burden is in very good condition with good strong colours and no damage or moisture. This painting is very similar to the previous watercolour study of Runswick Bay which was sold on this site 10/06/2013 but from a slightly different angle and including the beach to the rh side and more details of the house. The dimensions are also very similar. The studies have been completed at the same time of year but this painting is in the early evening with a slight reddish tone to the sky. The gulls are flying around and standing on the rooftops but there are no boats in the Bay. People can be seen on the beach. The painting is typical of the work of this very well-known artist but without a visible signature; as was the case with the previous painting, the signature was partly obscured by the mount and I suspect that it has been completely concealed by the mount in this framing. As the frame is very well sealed I do not wish to open it. The double mount layout has Arctic White coloured outer, Buttermilk inner and an 8mm wide Arctic White surrounding section midway between the window edge and the outer mount board creating an attractive surround to the painting; the mounts are also in very good condition. Sarah, 1834; Washerwomen on Lake Como. Watercolour on paper, signed W.H. Harriott 1834. Framed and glazed.

Dimensions : Frame :  373mm x 270mm x 16mm. Image : 175mm x 124mm. Weight :  0.900kg net.

Condition/Notes : Very good. The watercolour on paper study of a group of washerwomen on the banks of Lake Como is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or moisture. The painting is a particularly interesting study with some interesting features, notably the inscription and date - Sarah 1834 - on the base structure of the central turret-like building and the unusual vessel crossing the lake. The central sitting female figure may well be the Sarah in question but her relationship is a subject for further research. It is well known that William Henry spent several weeks every year on the Continent sketching and drawing and many of his works are in this region. The structure is very detailed and typical of the artist's architectural studies. The painting is signed W.H. Harriot in the lower rh corner, dated 1834 below the signature and displayed within an off-white mount which has the artist's name below the window and erroneously states fl.1811-1846 (should be 1811-1839, his year of death). The mount is in good condition with medium toning to the window cut edge. The plain gilt frame is in good condition with light usage and scuffing; verso hardboard backing sealed with gummed tape. No visible script. Screw-eyes and wire attached.

Scene in Lancashire, near Bolton, signed W.J. Smith, 1885. Watercolour on paper pasted to card. Signed and dated by the artist and inscribed verso.

Condition/Notes : Damaged. The watercolour and gouache on paper is in good condition regarding the painting and colour but the base has been damaged with a crack extending from the top to lower edge. The surface crack resulting from a crease runs from 100mm in from the top rh corner down to 80mm in from the lower rh corner with another crease at 60mm in from the top rh corner running down to 120mm from the top rh corner. Another crease runs from 75mm up from the lower rh corner down to 50mm in from the lower rh corner. The damage has been stabilised and providing the painting is handled carefully will not worsen. If the painting is carefully mounted the damage will be arrested and the painting will still be enjoyed without a great loss of satisfaction. The painting depicts a landscape, entitled by the artist "Scene in Lancashire, near Bolton". The artist's signature and date 1885 is in the lower rh corner. There are some light foxing spots in the sky. Verso, in the artist's ink handscript is the title and some dimensions written in ink..

Scheik Abadie village and mosque containing the tomb and relics of the Christian monk Abona Abede, venerated by Turkish pilgrims and from whom the village and mosque are named.

Historical accounts of this area can be found in great detail in Charles Perry's publication "A View of the Levant : particularly of Constantinople, Syria, Egypt and Greece (London ; Woodward & Co., 1743) particularly on p.328.

The watercolour study of the mosque, which contains the tomb and relics, adjacent remains of the village and general landscape including the River Nile and passing figures with camels, is in good condition with good colours. There are a few light foxing spots in the sky. The painting is signed in black in the lower lh corner L.M.N. and faintly dated beneath July 1856; also titled in the same hand Scheick Abadie Egypt in the lower rh corner. (There is a small letter "a" preceding Scheick in the title which could be an abbreviation of "al" or perhaps a mistake). Note the variations of the spelling of the village which is replicated in the various accounts and range from Scheick Abade, Scheick Abadie, Scheik Abadie, al Sheik Abadie, Sheikh Abade and Insine or Insine'.

Currently the artist is not known but the initials L.M.N. are being researched. Any info will be added later.

The painting is displayed within a "Maple" coloured contemporary mount which is in good condition. The standard gilt decorated frame is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing in places - ready to display. Hardboard backing board secured with points and sealed with gummed framing tape. No visible script. Hanging cord attached to eyes.

An interesting and historical painting.

A Scottish Highland landscape study, watercolour and pencil on paper, attributed to William Leighton Leitch, c1860.

The study depicts a Highland loch with mountain range, figures in a rowing boat and a single figure sitting in the foreground.

The subject and the monochromatic nature of the depiction are quite often revisited by this well known Scottish artist who specialised in remote topographical studies in Europe and Great Britain.

There is no visible signature but this is fairly common with this artist.

The painting is in good condition with no marking or foxing; there is a narrow faint toning band on the upper edge and the two sides indicating a previous smaller mount window but this is not a distraction.

The double mount board with inner white and gilt edges and cream surround is in good condition and quite new. The antique style gilt wooden frame is in good condition with very light scuffs in places.

The hard cardboard backing board is secured by many nails and sealed with gummed framing tape. Framer's label attached to mid-lower edge, Gale & Co. Ltd., Birmingham. Hanging cord attached.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour painting on paper is in very good condition. The colours are bright and there is no foxing or moisture ingress. The painting depicts a typical summer's day on the beach in Sidmouth Devon with groups of people enjoying the scene and looking out to sea. The activity of the people depicted is typical of the work of Michael Crawley. The painting is presented beneath a single lined mount board which is also in good condition. The gilt wooden frame is sturdy and in good condition with general wear to the edges commensurate with age. The glazing is clear. The back of the frame is covered with a card backing board secured by panel pins and sealed with 40mm framing tape. Screw-eyes and cord attached. The title "Sidmouth Devon" is handwritten on a small label attached top lh corner. Smyrona (Smyrna, Izmir) Turkey, Assignation, watercolour on paper, after Blake (William Blake, hence Sir William Blake Richmond, 1842-1921). Unsigned 19th C Continental School, dated verso 1873. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no damage or moisture. The painting depicts an assignation between a veiled woman standing next to a seated man outside a building on the slopes of Mount Yamanlar with the city of Smyrona below and the characteristic rolling hills across the Gulf of Izmir. The painting is titled "Smyrona (Turkey) after Blake 1873" verso and appears to be in the style of Sir William Blake Richmond's Orientalist studies in this region. The work is displayed within a double lined white mount which is in quite good condition with toning to the window edges; there are some thunderflies scattered around the mount but these can be easily removed on opening the frame. The decorated gilt frame is in good condition with light wear; MDF backing board is secured by framing tape. A glossy white label is attached to lower edge with title "Smyrona (Turkey) after Blake 1873". On the upper edge is written in ink 1873 Smyra Izmir. Screw-eyes and wire attached. Sneinton Windmill, Nottingham, watercolour on paper, signed S. Parr. c1880.

Condition/Notes : Good but with restoration. The watercolour on paper study of a location near to Sneinton windmill, Nottingham, is in good condition with good colour. There is, however, a small area of restoration approx 8mm x 4mm to the rh corner of the windmill sail - an actual hole in the paper base has been backed with an identical match of paper which has very effectively concealed the damage (possibly resulting from removal of a foxing spot). The restoration can be seen under close examination but is virtually unnoticeable in normal viewing. The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner. The painting is displayed within a multi-lined "arctic white" mount which is in good condition. The gilt and green faced frame is in good condition with light wear, backed with a sheet of hardboard sealed with gummed tape. Hanging cord attached. The painting is typical of the work of this Nottingham artist.
