Horse and Cart on Road to Market near Mdina, oil on canvas, signed Jos. Galea Malta 1970. Framed.

Imperial : Frame : 22" x 26" x 2-1/4". Image : 15-1/2" x 19-1/2".

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on canvas study of a traditional Maltese horse and cart with two figures taking produce to market near Mdina with rain clouds in the sky is in good condition with good colour; there is a slightly lighter mark in the sky centre above Mdina, 30mm x 10mm max, which may be a cleaning test wipe which could be corrected if desired although it doesn't detract from the overall image. There is a slight shadow of the rh stretcher bar along the rh edge in the sky and along the top edge. The location should be easy to identify with reference to the stone monument between the two trees. The scene is typically Maltese and gives an alternative view of Mdina in the background from the more commonly seen close-up studies of The Old City. The painting is signed Jos. Galea Malta in the lower rh corner in his usual style with the date 1970 alongside. Displayed within a gilt wood and decorative composition frame which is in good condition, ready to hang; wooden artisan stretcher in good sturdy condition with canvas secured by drawing pins. The quite taut canvas has no visible damage and bears a label attached "Original Painting from Galea's Art Gallery 192, Strait Street, Valletta - Malta". Edges of the frame sealed with gummed Kraft paper. Rings and cord attached.

An interesting oil painting by this well-known, listed, Maltese artist.

There are several variations of this work known to exist in watercolour but this appears to be the ultimate work.

Condition/Notes : Good. The oil on Daler board painting is in good condition with no paint loss or damage and depicts the Houlder Line cargo ship mv Beacon Grange at sea.

The mv Beacon Grange had a short and tragic life. Built in 1938 by Hawthorn Leslie & Co. Ltd. at Hebburn-on-Tyne she traded between the UK and South America until 27/4/1941 when on a voyage, in ballast, from the Tyne to Buenos Aires she was torpedoed at 1612 hrs in position 62.05N 16.20W (South of Iceland) by U-552 commanded by Erich Topp and sunk. 2 members of the 82 crew were lost and the survivors were picked up by the Belgian Trawler Edouvard Anseele, then transferred to HMS Gladiolus (K34) and landed in Londonderry. Details can be found on www.uboat.net and other sources.

In the painting she is displaying the Houlder Line colours and funnel. The artist's signature is in the lower rh corner and dated 1975.

The grey fabric lined recessed frame is in good condition with scuffing and wear to the edges; the Daler board is secured by nails and sealed with self-adhesive tape. Hanging cord attached.

Mountain Scenes with Sheep and Cattle, A Pair, oil on Birchmore boards, one signed A. Allen, other no visible signature but may be concealed by oak frame. c1915. Original machine carved oak frames.

Condition/Notes : Good. Both in similar condition. The first, with Sheep, is in good condition with good colour. There is a small 2mm square surface hole to the face of the Birchmore board support to the rh side of the upper sheep and a small 1mm circular area of paint loss extending from the latter hole but it is not particularly noticeable. There appears to be some marking to the inside of the glazing which can be cleaned when opening the frame. This painting appears to be unsigned although the signature may be concealed by the frame lower edge.

The painting is displayed directly below the glazing, as was the practice at the turn of the century, within the original attractive machine carved solid oak frame which is in good condition. The Birchmore board base is secured by period headless nails and was sealed with dark brown dust-sheet which has been partly removed at some time to view the script on the board which states : "Miss. Athel Wass, No. 31 Bussell Street Sutton-in-Ashfield Notts. Miss Ethel 2 in pair gilt slip + glass. November 13-1917 or 1916 (crossed out)". Interesting to note that there is no gilt slip which appears to not have been fitted for some reason as these are certainly original frames. Old scre-eyes and cord fitted.

The second painting, with Cattle, is in good condition with good colour although there may be some interaction between some parts of the upper sky and the inner glazing due to close proximity. The scene is very attractive Edwardian decorative art and benefits from the artist's signature in the lower lh corner .

The frame is matching and likewise in good condition, Birchmore board base secured by headless nails. Dust-sheet has been partly opened at some time to reveal the board but no visible script. Old screw-eyes and cord attached.

An attractive pair of Edwardian oils  ready to hang in an appropriate corner.

Norfolk Windpump, oil on canvas, signed initials R.C. 20th C Norfolk School.  c1930.

Condition/Notes : The oil on canvas is in quite good condition with no paint loss and good colour. There is intermittent gilt lining near the edges of the canvas from a previous frame which has been removed at some time and some slight paint loss revealing the canvas near the edge but this will be concealed by reframing. The painting depicts a typical two storey Norfolk drainage windpump with a boat shaped cap against an overcast and sullen sky; a church steeple can be seen to the left of the structure and a dirt-track runs towards the viewer. The painting is signed with initials R.C. in the lower rh corner. The canvas is stapled to the stretcher around the edges and loose folded over the back. Below the signature on the outer edge is written in pencil handscript what appears to be "ZILVER"; no other script is visible. The canvas is in good condition. Overall, an interesting historical painting which will benefit from identification of the artist and locaton of the windpump.

Packhorse Bridge (aka Sheepwash Bridge) at Ashford-in-the-Water, near Bakewell, Derbyshire. Oil on canvas, recently re-lined. Unsigned. 19th Century English School. c1870.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The oil on canvas painting depicts the old bridge at Ashford-in-the-Water known as Packhorse Bridge or Sheepwash Bridge near Bakewell, Derbyshire, with a small boat carrying two fishermen midstream. The bridge can still be seen today. The overall condition of the painting is quite good although there are areas of craqueleur especially in the lower rh quarter and two small areas of actual paint loss - one triangular in shape 5mm x 5mm x 5mm and another 4mm x 1mm which can be seen in the images above. There are also some other small areas of loss along the lower edge which have been restored at some time. The painting also appears to have been revarnished within the last 10 years and re-lined with new canvas. This restoration has arrested the deterioration but further work needs to be carried out to bring the painting back to good condition. The canvas is taut to the correct tension. The wooden frame is  20th C simulated gilt antique style which complements the painting and is in good condition. The canvas is attached to what appears to be a much older stretcher although the mode of attachment cannot be seen. An interesting point is that a wax seal is affixed to the middle of the lower stretcher which states " Pro Deo Patria Et Rege" (For God, My Country and My King) below the Coat of Arms (yet to be identified). The frame and stretcher have been sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. New hooks and cord attached. An interesting 19th Century English School painting which will benefit from a small amount of restoration work. A project.
