19thC Persian School, a social gathering, gouache on paper with Farsi script above. Signed or annotated lower lh corner margin. Original fame. c1820.

Condition/Notes : Good/quite good. The 19thC Persian School gouache on paper which depicts a social gathering with Farsi script above is in quite good condition with good colour; there is a small area of paint loss to the face of the second figure down on the lh side in green dress, but not noticeable in normal viewing and stable. The painting is applied to a coarse paper ground and off-set to the lh side. There is a small annotation in black paint to the lower lh border (please view in the images) which has not yet been resolved. An interesting study typical of the period.

The painting is mounted, off-set to the lh side, in the original stained hardwood glazed frame. Original wooden backing board secured by old rusty nails and partly sealed in old torn pasted backing paper which has been removed in the central area. No visible script. Twisted hanging wire attached.

A Bend in the River Wye, Bourne-End on Thames, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed A.R. Williams, titled verso. Original frame. c1900.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour and gouache on paper study of the bend in the river is in good condition with quite good colour; there is a slight degree of toning to the colour but there is dense growth in the location which is restricting the light and hence moderating the intensity which has been captured by the artist. This section of the River Wye appears to be near the River Thames in the last bend before the confluence and will be easily recognized by people familiar with the area. The painting is signed in the lower lh corner AR Williams.

Displayed within a gilt mount which is in good condition.

The original gilt wooden frame is in good sturdy condition with light rubbing to the face. Acid board backing secured by period headless nails and sealed with original dark brown dust-sheet which has been previously detached to the edges; some losses to the upper edge. Old browned label attached to centre with faded ink handscript "A bend in the river" Bourne-End on Thames by A.R. Williams. Framer's label attached to mid-lower edge "Established 1860 W. Sullivan & Sons, Picture Frame Makers, Cardboard Mount Cutters, Washable Gilt Moulding Importers, 10, Lower Arcade, Bristol. Old Frames Re-Gilt. Pictures Cleaned and Restored. Artists' Materials."

Thick cord and old rings attached.

An interesting study by this known Welsh artist.

A Highland Loch, gouache on paper, no visible signature. Framed. c1960.

Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache on paper study which is described in title as "A Highland Loch" is in good condition with good colour. The scene depicts a Scottish landscape with a central castle overshadowed by two distant mountains shrouded in mist and catching the rays of the rising sun; a sole sailing boat on the water. The study is titled A Highland Loch in black paint in the lower rh corner, partly obscured by the inner edge of the frame. There is no visible signature but considering the partly obscured title a signature could be concealed by the frame and this can be checked on opening the frame. There is a small splash of apparent gouache paint on the inside of the glazing about 1 inch above the illuminated peak of the smaller mountain and this can be removed on opening the frame if considered necessary.

The painting is displayed directly below the glazing in the manner of the early 20thC but do consider this to be a mid-20thC work.

The gilt, deeply recessed decorative frame with porcelain coloured inner band is in good solid form with no significant scuffing. Rigid cardboard backing board sealed with framing tape. No visible script. Hanging wire attached to metal rings.

Overall a pleasing decorative painting executed in gouache in the traditional style.

A pair of landscapes, unknown location, said to be American School, gouache on paper, unsigned. Framed. c1900.

Condition/Notes : Good. The upper painting depicts a country scene with house and track beside a stream leading to a field; cattle in foreground and birds above. Some surface dirt in places but good colours with no losses or damage. Can be cleaned on opening frame. Displayed directly below glazing in gloss cherry veneer wooden frame which has light wear and scuffing places; customized faux-leather backing board with adjustable support attached, nailed in position and sealed with black faux-leather tape.

Lower painting depicts mountain scene with lake and fishing boats beside a track leading away to upper left. Good colour and no damage; light marking on inside of glazing. Displayed directly below glazing in matching frame which is likewise in good sturdy condition with light wear; same faux-leather backing and support with same fixing.

An interesting pair of gouache studies which may reveal more information if opened.

A pair of Art Nouveau influenced Orientalist Arabian scenes, one viewed from Red Sea and the other a Desert scene. Both paired in ebonized frames.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The view from the Red Sea has good strong colour with particularly striking ochre foreground and horizon in contrast to the stark black images of the two boats relieved by the contours of the mosque and structures on the shoreline and their respective shadows in the sea.

There is light marking to the surface of the painting but in normal viewing conditions these are not noticeable.

Signed Hamed in black paint in the lower rh corner.

Displayed in an ebonized wooden frame with black spacer; scuffing to the edges and corners. Glazing has been broken or removed at some time but can be easily replaced if required. Board support secured by multiple old rusty nails and sealed with original dark brown dust-sheet; Boots the Chemists Picture Framing & Art Department label attached to centre lower edge.

The second of the pair is a desert view  with several camels and figures silhouetted against the slate coloured sky, mosques and foreground awaiting the rising sun. The colours are good but as with the other pair there is some light scuffing to the painting; again in normal viewing conditions (displayed on a wall) this is not noticeable.

Signed Hamed in black paint in the lower rh corner.

The ebonized frame is in similar condition with scuffing in places. The board support is visible in places and protected by an acid backing board which is secured by old rusty nails. Dark brown dust-sheet detached in places and torn in some places. Boots the Chemists Picture Framing & Art Department label attached to centre lower edge with ink script 2. and ref number 2444/1 32 added.

An interesting pair of gouache studies both clearly signed and reflecting the style of the period.

Imperial : Frame : (Max) : 13-3/4" x 17-1/2" x 1-1/4".

Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache on paper study is in good condition with good colour. There are five light foxing spots in the sky, one towards top rh corner, one above headland, two towards mid-top edge and one towards top lh corner but they are not noticeable in normal viewing. There is also a light vertical surface scratch 12mm long in the sky above the central clouds to the mount window edge but again this is not noticeable in normal viewing. The scene is a popular view across the Bay towards smoking Vesuvius in the distance  with the city along the shoreline and several sailing boats off-shore. There is no sign of a signature.

The work is presented in a triple mount  display with pale blue wash-lines around the mount window which complements the painting. Gilt frame with decoration to corners and centre-edges, light scuffing in places and a 5mm wide chip to moulding edge in lower rh corner. Frame backing board sealed with gummed framing tape; water stains to parts of backing board. No visible script or labels.

A very pleasing well balanced painting with soothing colours.

Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache on Whatman paper study of Brickeen Old Stone Bridge is in good condition with very light foxing spots in places and slight vertical rippling to paper base. The study is a popular subject and has been similarly produced by such artists as Sean O'Connor in the 1950's. Examination of the painting removed from the frame reveals some marking to the concealed edges covered by the mount (see images) and part of the Whatman watermark in the paper base. No script. No signature.

Camel and Rider in Silhouette at Dusk, gouache on paper pasted to acid board, signed Hamed. c1900. Framed.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The gouache on paper study depicts a classical Arabian scene with camel and rider on a dune silhouetted against the distant mosque and the turmeric coloured sky at sunset . The study is simple and yet effective and captures the essence of Arabia in an attractive and introspective manner. The work is signed Hamed in the foreground below the camel. The painting is in good condition with good strong colour and no paint loss; there are, however,  a few light surface scratches on close examination and a light horizontal surface crease across the mid-upper sky but this is not noticeable in normal viewing. There is also some light vertical rubbing of the black gouache onto the background which may have occurred during periods of high temperature and humidity, probably when the frame was previously glazed, but again this does not affect the apppearance or enjoyment of the image. As was the practice at the turn of the century the paper support has been pasted to an acid board but this has not affected the work in any way as the support is heavy duty and a natural barrier.

The painting is displayed in an ebonized previously glazed frame which is in quite good condition with general wear commensurate with its age. The acid backing board is loosely secured by old nails which have been twisted to compensate for the missing glazing. Remnants of the original dust sheet remain on the edges and appear to be probably from Boots Picture Framing & Art Department  which was very popular at that time. There is a long reference number written in pencil along the top rh edge of the frame. Old screw-eyes attached.

Castle Rock, Lynton, North Devon, titled Castle Rock Lynton, signed Garman Morris, c1900.

Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache study of Castle Rock looking out to sea with distant haze is in good condition with good colour. There is some browning and dusting which appears to be on the inner side of the glazing casting a shadow to the painting but this can be removed when cleaning/ renovating if required.

The study is very atmospheric and depicts the well known coastline on a calm and sultry summer's day only distracted by the lone fishing boat off the headland.

The painting is titled Castle Rock Lynton in light fine pencil handscript in the lower lh corner and signed similarly Garman Morris in the lower rh corner.

The study is one in a series of iconic Devon coastal scenes which were very popular at the turn of the century and have been emulated by many of Morris' contemporaries and now regaining popularity among collectors.

Displayed directly beneath the glazing, as was the practice at that time, in a plain stepped gilt inner edged wooden frame which is in good strong condition but with some scratching and scuffing to edges. Hard cardboard backing board secured by old rusty panel pins; original brown dust-sheet has been detached at upper and side edges to reveal backing board with no script. Clovelly, North Devon, gouache on paper, signed Roland Stead. c1920. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The gouache on paper study of Clovelly viewed from above the harbour and looking out to sea is in good condition with good colour. There is, however, marking to the inside of the glazing which is casting shadow onto the painting and some light fungal growth associated with this - caused by the painting being framed without a protective mount which was the practice in the early 1900's. This can be easily removed on opening the frame and cleaning the glazing. I recommend that the painting should be reframed using a conservation mount to protect the work and prevent any future moisture/damp problems. The scene is very attractive and was a favourite subject of many Victorian/Edwardian artists attracted by the wonderful vista created by the steep coastline and tranquil bay. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower lh corner beneath the nearest tree-trunk in his usual manner. As mentioned above, the painting is framed directly beneath the glazing  which was normal procedure at that time. The basic recessed original frame is in fair condition with general scuffing and scratching wear to the face and edges but is in sound structural condition; cardboard backing secured by rusty panel pins and sealed with gummed framing tape. Framer's stamp to the lower centre, The Art Shop, 17, Lister Lane, Halifax. No visible script. Overall, a very pleasing painting which will benefit from reframing.

Clovelly, North Devon coast, watercolour and gouache, signed MacColl. c1900. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour and gouache study of Clovelly coast has good strong colour and no damage but there are some light foxing  spots in places, particularly the sky. These foxing spots are very light and not particularly noticeable unless viewing very closely. There is also some marking to the inside of the glazing which can be cleaned on opening the frame and a delicate brushing of the painting will be beneficial. Otherwise, the painting is in good condition. The period gilt mount is in quite good condition although would recommend upgrading to a conservation standard mount if the frame is being opened or the painting reframed. The work is signed in the lower lh corner - please view the image below. This work is  attributed to the Scottish artist Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1949) who mostly painted watercolour and gouache landscapes.

The basic gilt frame is in good condition with some light scuffing in places and complements the painting in style. The hardboard backing board is secured by arrow points and sealed with 25mm self-adhesive framing tape. A framer's label is attached to the lower which states "Thellusson Fine Art Galleries Ashbourne" which are no longer trading. Hanging cord attached.

Coastal View, Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius, gouache on paper, pasted to board, signed M. Gianni.

Condition/Notes : Good. Neapolitan School study of the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the background. The gouache on paper, pasted to board, is in very good condition with good colour and no marking or moisture. The painting depicts a coastal walkway with figures on the Bay of Naples with Mt. Vesuvius steaming in the background. A classic Neapolitan scene and a favourite subject for Maria Gianni - there are several very similar scenes by this artist in existence. The painting has the characteristic matt tone of gouache and a very Neapolitan feel to the overall work. The artist's signature - M. Gianni - is in the lower rh corner in the usual manner. The painting is currently unglazed and displayed without mount - typical of this period - within a decorative felt lined frame. The backing board is an acid board with brown paper pasted to the back and is currently loose fitted awaiting reglazing. As it is preferable to ship without glass, reglazing will be left to the future owner who may well wish to reframe the painting and include a conservation mount board to further protect the painting. A very pleasing painting and quite large compared to other similar works.

Coastal cargo ship in heavy seas off Cumbria, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed Brian D. Powell 85. Framed and glazed. 1985. Marine Art.

Condition/Notes : This watercolour and gouache study of a coastal cargo ship in heavy seas is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The spectacular depiction of the ferocious waves' spume highlighted in gouache is particularly realistic and the whole composition emphasizes the vulnerability of ships exposed to the might of nature. This scene is typical of the work of Brian Powell who specialises in coastal and maritime scenes related to his beloved adopted home of Cumbia. The painting is signed and dated in the artist's usual manner in the lower rh corner. The painting is displayed within an essence white mount which is also in very good condition with pleasing toning to the cut edges. The gilt lined wooden frame is in good condition with light wear to edges, MDF backing board secured with arrow points and sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. Hanging cord attached. Overall, an excellent maritime study, simple and yet very effective. Please note that despite my best efforts the images do not do justice to the realism of the painting.

Egyptian landscape, figures on bank of River Nile with Felucca and distant buildings, watercolour and gouache on card, signed Hassan el Yashmid, c1900. Framed. 19th/20thC Orientalist School.

The Egyptian landscape study is in good condition with good colour and no damage. The scene depicts an elderly man near a palm tree on the bank of the River Nile and two other figures beneath three palm trees; a distant felucca is sailing by and white buildings can be seen on the opposite bank. The study is dominated by the solitary date palm tree in the centre but the old man standing beneath is the centre of interest  appearing to be lost in contemplation and watched by the other two figures. The painting is signed in faded brown paint  "Hassan el Yashid" in the artist's usual style in the lower rh corner.

The identity of Hassan el Yashmid is somewhat vague and his name is often referred to as a nom de plume of the artist Victor E. Pickup although this is by no means certain. There has been much discussion on this subject and further information can be found at the following blog link : pending.  Please follow the Comment links within the blog for full associated information.

The painting is displayed within the original period heavy ebonized wooden frame with a mottled gilt spacer; good sturdy condition but with scuffing in places. Backing board secured by numerous nails and sealed with heavy coarse dark khaki coloured dust-sheet which is torn diagonally; "Water Color" written in large faded handscript along lower edge. Heavy hanging chain and cord attached to old large screw-eyes.

The painting is particularly interesting as original works by this artist are rarely seen. However, lithograph prints of his works are quite common and are found worldwide - usually displayed directly below glazing with metal lugs/brackets nailed/screwed on to wooden backing boards with heavy hanging chains attached and less commonly in highly decorative period frames, either ebonized or carved oak. These lithographs appear to have been sold in the Suez Canal region (Port Said or Suez) to transiting ships and hence distributed worldwide.

Dimensions : Frame : 367mm x 261mm x 22mm. Image : 235mm x 113mm. Weight : 1.500kg gross.

Condition/Notes : The gouache on paper painting depicts a man on a camel in the Egyptian desert near to an oasis and ruins. The mountainous landscape is shrouded in heat haze and the vegetation around the water is lush and colourful. The classical ruins stand starkly against the azure sky casting a reflection across the water. The artist's signature is in the lower lh corner in his usual manner. The colours are strong and vibrant. There are two light foxing spots in the lh quarter above the mountains and another in the sky above the rh column of the ruins. There is also a small black spot in the sky to the rh side of the latter column which can probably be removed on opening the frame. These defects are not particularly noticeable in normal viewing conditions. The light stone coloured mount is in good condition with medium toning to the cut window edges. The plain wooden frame is in good sound condition. The back of the frame is covered with a sheet of light MDF board secured by points and sealed with adhesive tape. There is a framer's label attached at the lower edge with full contact details (Linmark Ltd., Manchester.). Eyes and cord attached. This painting appears to be very similar to the one sold earlier this year by the same artist.

Maoris near the Omiru Falls, Wairau, North Island, New Zealand, gouache on paper, signed Richard Ogle, c1920. Titled and described on mount below which may be a copy of script verso.

The gouache painting on paper is in very good condition with good colours and no damage. The study depicts the spectacular Omiru Falls with three figures on the bank in what appears to be a search with the central figure pointing to something out of view and the woman calling to others. The study is typical of the work of this artist and children's book illustrator who specialised in the capture of colour changes at moments of natural light intensity such as sunrise and sunset which is very well portrayed in this painting.

The painting is signed Richard Ogle in black paint in the lower right hand corner in his usual style.

The painting is displayed below a cream coloured mount board which is in good condition; title and artist's brief biography printed in lower centre which is probably copied from the painting verso (unable to verify as frame is well sealed). The machine carved gilt wooden frame is in good condition with minor scuffing in places; hardboard backing secured by slightly rusting staples sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. Biography cutting of the artist Richard Bertram Ogle (active 1920-62) attached in centre; chalk markings in places.

Overall, a very good example of the work of this very well-known early 20thC British artist.

The painting depicts a figure reclining beneath the coconut palms on a moonlit night and presents an image of tropical serenity and beauty effectively capturing the shades of blue and the reflection of the moonlight in the tranquil waters. Painted during the artist's period of residence on the Trobriand Islands between 1922 and 1925 this work is one of a series of studies capturing the landscape and people of New Guinea.

The painting is signed in paint Ellis Silas in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual style. The card support is also inscribed verso Ellis Silas F.S.A. R.G.S. but this can only be viewed on opening the frame.

Caermarvon, moorland landscape, watercolour with gouache highlights on paper, framed and glazed, signed Alfred Grahame c1920.

Condition/Notes : The painting is in very good condition with strong colours. The heather in the foreground is highlighted in gouache. The painting depicts a moorland scene looking towards a distant peak which is typical of the works of this artist. His signature is in the lower rh corner.

The painting is mounted beneath a complementary double washline mount board; toning to the cut edges of the mount window. Otherwise the mount is in good condition with slight toning and dusting to edges.

The standard machine decorated wooden frame is sturdy and the glazing clear. Back of frame has been recovered and sealed with 50mm self-adhesive framing tape which is peeling slightly at the edges. The title Caermarvon c1888 Alfred Grahame was written on the remnants of the old dust-sheet and has been written upper rh quarter with the auction house label "98 31OCT 2009", serial number and Framer's label below "J. Pratt & Sons Derby". Screw-eyes and hanging cord attached.

An interesting 19thC landscape study very similar in style to the work of D.H. Pinder who is known to have signed some of his work with the alias Ben Graham. The scene does look typical of a Dartmoor study and very similar to some of Pinder's work. The significance of Caermarvon, presumably meaning Caernarvon, is uncertain although there are similar moorland scenes in that region.
