The Water Vendor, Egyptian suburban scene, oil on canvas, unsigned. Max Arnold, c1922. Unframed on stretcher.

World : £50.00

The water vendor in an Egyptian suburban scene with figures, oil on canvas nailed to stretcher, unsigned but known to be work of Max Arnold c1922.

The oil on canvas study depicts an Egyptian outer suburban scene near Cairo with a figure drinking water, holding his horse and a water vendor; other figures to the background. The main part of the study is in good condition with good colour and light marking in places but the lower section and upper section above the date palms have some losses and damage. Directly above the palm trees is an "L" shaped tear 55mm wide horizontally and 35mm vertically which has been temporarily secured with adhesive tape (see the images). The tear, or cut, is clean and can be quite easily repaired (or this section trimmed prior to framing). There is also some surface scratching to the rh edge of the canvas to the right of the latter tear and some light scratching to the lh edge of the canvas; both can be concealed by future framing. There are also areas of paint loss and scratching to the lower edge of the canvas (see images) which can also be concealed by framing.

The painting has not been signed but is known to be the work of Max W. Arnold (b.1897 Iasi Romania, d.1946 Bucharest) by comparison with the "Family Conversation on Street leading to Al-Azhar Mosque Cairo" with which it was paired although there is no apparent connection between the two scenes unless they are part of a larger series of Egyptian themed works. They have evidently been prepared for framing by the same artisan although there is no real evidence that they have ever been framed.

The canvas support has been nailed to the wooden stretcher and bears the faded ink stamp of the canvas manufacturer "Winsor & Newton, School of Art Canvas, Rathbone Place, London" which was the company's address from 1832 until they moved to Wealdstone in 1937.

An interesting early work of the artist although unfortunately unsigned.

Thurne Dyke Mill, Thurne Dyke, Norfolk, signed initials CAW (C.A. Wright), oil on board. c1930. Artist's name and address on label verso.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The oil on board painting depicts the Old Windmill known as Thurne Dyke Mill, which was built in 1820 for drainage, and is located at the end of Thurne Dyke just off the River Thurne about 20 minutes down-river from Potter Heigham. The windmill is now owned by Norfolk Windmills Trust and is a very well known tourist attraction shown on many Norfolk Broads posters and postcards. The painting is in good condition with good colour but there is some slight surface paint loss in the lower rh corner near the board edge caused by abrason from the frame but this can be concealed by relocating the board within the frame. There is light dusting in the sky which can be removed by cleaning. The painting is signed in monogram CAW with the letter C and A formed by the cross bar on the letter W; the artist's name is confirmed on a label attached verso. The original painted wooden frame is in fair condition with surface losses in places and general scuffing; the window inner edge gilt is showing through the paint in places. The hardboard base is secured by old headless nails; the brown paper  backing sheet is detached on the lh corner  revealing access to the inner frame. An old label is attached to upper edge which states in faded type "The old windmill. Thurne Dyke. Painted by C.A. Wright. 16. Castle Street. Wroxham." Screw-eyes and cord attached. C.A. Wright is a known Norfolk artist. Overall, an historical painting which will benefit from general cleaning and reframing.

Oil on panel, Travelling Musician and Beggar Girl, possibly faintly signed with monogram JM in lower rh corner. 19th Century Continental School.

The oil painting is executed on a heavy wooden panel and depicts a travelling musician with a beggar girl performing outside a doorway in a courtyard. There is a figure at the top of the stairs to the rear of the girl. The painting has been varnished quite heavily. There is what appears to be a faint monogram in the lower rh corner which could be JM. The wooden gilt frame is sturdy. There is the remnants of a label on the lower edge of the  frame which states "Pictures Cleaned & Lined Mirrors, Mouldings, Cornices & ...Old Frames Regilt..." The back of the frame is plain wood and the panel is nailed in place by two nails and two old headless panel pins. There is some handscript on the panel but cannot read it.

Condition : Fairly good. The painting has been quite heavily varnished and there is a degree of surface bubbling in parts of the varnish to the lh side of the musician and rh side of the girl and below the fabric on the gallery above the musician. This is an interesting painting which will benefit from general cleaning.

TSS Statendam (II), Holland America Line, oil on board, signed by the South African artist D.T. Gray (20th Century).

Condition/Notes: The oil painting on board depicts a retrospective depiction of the TSS Statendam (II), of the Holland America Line, built in 1917 by Harland & Wolff Belfast. She never actually sailed for HAL as she was requisitioned by the British Government during WW1 and was torpedoed and sunk in 1918 when named SS Justicia. She was the second of four ships named Statendam commissioned  by HAL. Her successor Statendam (III) was built by H&W Belfast 1921-29 and sailed under HAL 1929-1940 when she was burnt out in May and scrapped in August 1940. They were very similar in design except for variations in the bridge and after upper-deck and lifeboat stowage. This is very similar to the classic oil painting of Statendam (II) 1917 in both aspect and location and may well be based on that painting.

The oil painting is in good condition with vibrant colours and captures the surge of the river as she departs Rotterdam. The painting is displayed within a basic green mount with a handwritten title below "Statendam Holland America Line". The painting is faintly signed in the lower rh quarter below the stern of the ship as DT Gray a known South African 20th Century artist who mostly paints South African landscapes.

The wooden frame is an attractive recessed style which is typical of this artist's other known paintings and is sturdy and undamaged. The back of the frame is protected by a sheet of plywood secured by panel pins  covered with self-adhesive tape. The framer's stamp is marked on the upper quarter. Rings and cord are attached.

An attractive and historical painting which may well reveal more information  than is currently known.

Ulm Minster, Bavaria, oil on paper, Attrib M Leek, c1860. Signature verso.

Ulm Minster, Bavaria, Germany. c1860. Oil painting on rough cut textured art paper with signature verso "M. Leek about 60/62".

Dimensions : 352mm x 282mm. Unframed.

Condition/Notes : The oil painting on paper is in good condition. The painting depicts Ulm Minster viewed from the Kleine Donau in old Ulm c1860 prior to the completion of the building in 1890. The buildings in the painting were destroyed during the bombing of Ulm in 1944 but the Minster escaped destruction as the spire was used as a navigational aid by Allied bombers. The spire is still the tallest in the world today.

The painting captures the low cloud and mist which is associated with the city and the proximity of the industrial area which was close to the Minster at that time. The location can be readily identified from photographs of modern day Ulm.

There is no signature on the painting but inscribed M. Leek verso.

The painting was housed in an old wooden gilt gesso moulded frame with a Boots Picture Framing Department label attached verso. On opening the frame and removing the painting the following pencil handscript was found verso "M Leek about 60/62" (see the images below). As the frame is quite worn and the decorative moulding damaged, the painting is being offered unframed and the quoted shipping rates reflect this. If the frame is required please contact me for an alternative quote.

The inscription "60/62" could indicate the date of the Minster at the time portrayed or the approximate date of the painting. According to records the Minster's spire was not completed until 1890 hence the truncated peak although this could be attributed to low cloud or mist which is often the case in contemporary photographs. In any event, the locality can be identified in photographs or paintings c1900 and does not exist post 1944.

Overall, a very interesting and historical painting of this famous Minster and city.
