Clovelly, North Devon coast, watercolour and gouache, signed MacColl. c1900. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour and gouache study of Clovelly coast has good strong colour and no damage but there are some light foxing  spots in places, particularly the sky. These foxing spots are very light and not particularly noticeable unless viewing very closely. There is also some marking to the inside of the glazing which can be cleaned on opening the frame and a delicate brushing of the painting will be beneficial. Otherwise, the painting is in good condition. The period gilt mount is in quite good condition although would recommend upgrading to a conservation standard mount if the frame is being opened or the painting reframed. The work is signed in the lower lh corner - please view the image below. This work is  attributed to the Scottish artist Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1949) who mostly painted watercolour and gouache landscapes.

The basic gilt frame is in good condition with some light scuffing in places and complements the painting in style. The hardboard backing board is secured by arrow points and sealed with 25mm self-adhesive framing tape. A framer's label is attached to the lower which states "Thellusson Fine Art Galleries Ashbourne" which are no longer trading. Hanging cord attached.

A very pleasing study by this known Scottish artist.

Coastal beach scene, watercolour on paper, signed P. Bicknell 1925, (Phillis Ellen Bicknell 3 February 1877 - 1957). Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : The painting is in good condition with no foxing or moisture. The scene depicts an isolated beach looking out to sea. The artist's signature and date 1925 is in the lower lh corner. Phyllis Ellen Bicknell (sometimes spelt Phillis) studied under Arthur G. Bell and Durham University and exhibited at the RI of Painters in Watercolours and the Alpine Club Gallery and is recognised as flourishing between 1909 and 1933. 7 of her works are displayed in the National Trust's Collection at Wallington, Northumberland, Museum. The scene is typical of her work and her signature is signed in her usual manner. The painting is displayed beneath an aged gilt mount typical of that period. There is toning to the window cut edge and around the edges. The original gilt wooden frame is in fair condition with scuffing and scratching in places. The back of the frame is covered with a cardboard sheet secured by panel pins and partly sealed by 25mm gummed framing tape. Screw-eyes and cord attached.

A coastal landscape near Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, with coconut palms and beach, watercolour on paper, unsigned. c1920.

The watercolour study is in good condition with good colours. Some very light foxing in places above the distant headland.

The artist has skilfully captured the image of a rain squall moving across the bay and has interspersed the blue sky with bands of rain laden clouds so typical of this seasonal weather effect in this region of Oceania.

No visible signature but this could be concealed by the mount.

The painting is displayed within the original heavy pearl coloured mount which is in good condition but with some foxing and dusting in places; there is also dusting and marking to the inside of the glazing which is casting shadows to the mount. This can be can removed on cleaning the inside of the glazing.

The ebonized frame with gilt inner and outer edges is in good structural condition but with some scuffing and scratching in places. The backing board is three separate cardboard strips secured by the original nails. 9815 writted in pencil across the centre. Original dust sheet has been removed at some time. The back of the mount can be seen through a gap between the backing strips and pencil script 9815 10 x 8 1/2 can be seen. A backing board to the painting base can  also be seen and this appears to have been gummed to the back of the mount board around the edges of the mount window (which was a common display practice in late 19thC - early 20thC).

Coastal landscape with seagulls and sailing boats, watercolour on paper, signed Robert J. Pollard, dated 1920. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : The watercolour painting on paper is in good condition with good colour. The rocky foreground bushes contrast with the cliff face and grass scrub on top and the cliffs are effectively reflected in the waters of the bay. The sailing boats in the distance emphasize the calmness of the afternoon sea and the gulls give a sense of motion to the scene. The sky is lightly clouded which again is effectively reflected in the distant ocean. Overall, the work has a tranquil atmosphere. The painting is signed and dated in the lower rh corner.

The painting is displayed beneath a cream coloured mount which is in good condition. The glazing is clear but there is a 65mm light surface scratch on the rh side over the mount edge.

The textured, painted, wooden frame is sturdy and in good condition but with scuffing to the face and edges. The back of the frame is covered with a sheet of cardboard secured by pins and sealed with 50mm gummed framing tape. Screw-eyes and wire attached.

Unknown location but has features that will be known.

Coastal scene, watercolour on card, framed and glazed, signed by M.T. Barratt dated 1967.

Condition/Notes :

The watercolour painting depicts a coastal scene with a house and harbour with boats in the background. The colours are good and painting is signed by the artist and dated in the lower rh corner. The artist M.T. Barratt is a known artist but I have been unable to obtain any biographical details.

The painting is displayed beneath a complementary mount which has toning to the window edges.

The painting is in good condition with no signs of foxing or moisture. There is some marking around the image which appears to be on the inside of the glass.

The frame is lightly painted wood.

The back of the frame is sealed with card covered with brown paper and framing tape. There is a handscript inscription in the centre from Marjorie and "M.T. Barratt Painted 1967" in the lower rh corner in the same hand. It appears that this is the artist's script.

Coastal cargo ship in heavy seas off Cumbria, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed Brian D. Powell 85. Framed and glazed. 1985. Marine Art.

Condition/Notes : This watercolour and gouache study of a coastal cargo ship in heavy seas is in very good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The spectacular depiction of the ferocious waves' spume highlighted in gouache is particularly realistic and the whole composition emphasizes the vulnerability of ships exposed to the might of nature. This scene is typical of the work of Brian Powell who specialises in coastal and maritime scenes related to his beloved adopted home of Cumbia. The painting is signed and dated in the artist's usual manner in the lower rh corner. The painting is displayed within an essence white mount which is also in very good condition with pleasing toning to the cut edges. The gilt lined wooden frame is in good condition with light wear to edges, MDF backing board secured with arrow points and sealed with self-adhesive framing tape. Hanging cord attached. Overall, an excellent maritime study, simple and yet very effective. Please note that despite my best efforts the images do not do justice to the realism of the painting.

Street Scene, St. Ives, watercolour on paper, signed W. Sands. c1930. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no foxing or moisture. The scene depicts a cobbled street with details of a building, which must be of significance but currently unidentified, and three lobster pots. The painting has the characteristic blue tone which Sands identified with the quality and effects of the natural light in St. Ives and can be seen in many of his works. Whether this interpretation is effective is open to debate. The study is signed in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual manner and titled St. Ives in the lower lh corner. The painting is displayed within an old grey mount which has marking and foxing in places and toning around the window. The gloss varnished frame is in good condition with light scuffing and sealed with a card backing board and kraft which is torn in places along the edges. No visible script. Old screw-eyes and twine attached.

Continental Lakeside Landscape with Boats, one grounded, and Figures, watercolour on paper heightened with white, signed Edwin Earp. Framed and glazed.

Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper heightened with gouache is in quite good condition with quite good colour. There is some light surface creasing to the base which has left a vertical crease running from top to lower edge to the lh side of the grounded boat, and another very light crease about 40mm to the left. This is noticeable but does not affect the overall image when viewed in situ. The study is typical of the work of this well-known British artist and is similar to other works, especially the depiction of the two figures and the boats. The smoke from the cottage is heightened with white and forms the centre of attraction within the somewhat desolate landscape. An interesting aspect is the apparently grounded boat near to the shore.

The painting is signed in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual manner.

The traditional gilt mount is in good condition and the decorative acanthus leaf style gilt moulded frame is in good condition with very light losses; verso is backed with new card sealed with gummed tape. Hanging wire attached. No visible script.

A professionally framed work which is presented to best advantage and ready to display.

Continental Terrace View, probably in Portugal, graphite and watercolour on paper, unsigned (possibly a faint indistinct signature in lower lh corner). Attributed to M. Kitchener. c1900.

Condition/Notes : Quite good but slightly faded. The graphite and watercolour painting on paper depicts a terrace walkway with vines overhead and a view towards distant headland across the bay. Very similar in style and subject to the works of listed artist Madge Kitchener (Exh 1921-29) and hence the attribution. There is light foxing on the horizon rh side and a few small spots in places.

The paper is mounted on a card within a traditional period ebonized frame.

The frame is in quite good condition but with a small surface chip on the rh corner. The back is covered with an old sunned backing sheet which is gummed at the edges to the frame. There are a few old panel pins in places. Screw-eyes and wire and hanging ring attached.

An interesting work of the period which will benefit from identification of the location.

Daily Chat at the gate of a cottage near Sudbury, Suffolk, signed George Oyston dated 1911. Framed. Watercolour with patches of gouache on the trees.

The painting revisits a favourite theme of the artist which captures village and farming people in bucolic mundane situations around the Suffolk countryside. The study depicts a lady starting her daily chat with the tenant of a cottage at the gate of the property. A peep into the distant countryside extends beyond the corner of the garden hedge but the attention is drawn by the mass of foliage to the back of the cottage.

The painting is in very good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. The artist has signed the painting in brown paint "George Oyston 1911" in the lower lh corner.

The painting is displayed within a cream coloured mount which is likewise in very good condition.

The plain cream coloured wooden frame with gilt and white inner edge is in good condition with light scuffing in places.Hardboard backing board secured by arrow points and sealed with gummed framing tape. George Oyston 1911 written in pencil script lower rh corner and F99 encircled in upper lh corner. There is also a faint pencil note in the lower lh corner which reads "Pastel sketch L........." which I presume refers to the striking blue foliage of the trees in the painting but which I consider to be gouache and not pastel as x20 magnification supports in my opinion. Framer's label attached lower centre "Picture Framing Service by The Pot Boiler Brentnall House, Vicarage St., North Walsham, Norfolk. Tel. 2667". Hanging wire attached and ready to display.

A pleasing work by this prolific British artist.

East Asian Shishi, Temple Guardian Lion icon, watercolour on paper, signed faintly A. Clemet with faint date 1891(?) below.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper painting depicts an East Asian  Shishi, Temple Guardian Lion, in an unidentified location, with flowers and Magnolia tree in the courtyard. The painting is in good condition with good colours and no sign of moisture or damage. The painting is signed somewhat indistinctly in red in the lower rh corner which appears to be A. Clemet. Beneath is a faint date inscription which appears to read 1891 but it is not clear. The script does not show on a photo. The painting is displayed within a plain white mount which is in good condition. The heavy, stylistic, wooden frame is in good condition but has five mortises on each inner side of the verticals which appear to have been used for some purpose. There is also green marking on the inside edges of the frame and indications of wear. Considering the nature of this painting I can confidently say that the latter indicates that a pair of doors were originally fitted to the frame so that the image could be concealed when not viewed, as in the case of a shrine painting. This image obviously has religious significance which can be ascertained when the location of the temple is identified. The gilt decoration on each corner is fading in places. The back of the frame is closed with a board secured by 12 wood screws. A hanging bracket is fitted at the top and another was fitted on the lower horizontal but is now missing. No script or labels verso. This is a particularly interesting painting which merits further research. Any updates will be added to this description.

English Cottage, watercolour on paper, signed Dudley Tennant (Charles Dudley Tennant 1866-1952). c1930.

Condition/Notes : Good.

The watercolour study of an English Cottage with a grazing cow in the foreground is in good condition with good strong colour and no damage. There are two small marks to the upper edge, one above the tree and the other in the sky between the chimney and the tree, but these are not noticeable in normal viewing. It appears that the mount has been replaced at some time as the line of the original mount can be seen lightly along the top edge about 2mm below the existing mount edge. The study depicts a traditional English cottage with a small-holding attached and the cow grazing in the foreground; a pathway leads through the wooden gate to the field in the background. The location is probably in Surrey as the artist located to this region around this time. The painting is signed in the lower lh corner in the artist's usual manner.

The beige coloured mount is in good condition. The plain wooden frame is in good sturdy condition with very light wear and good tight mitres; verso backed with hardboard and sealed with black fabric tape. Framer's label attached lower lh corner; rings and cord attached. No visible script. Note there are some reflections in the glazing.

Entrance to the Farm, watercolour on heavy textured paper, signed VE Tuff, c1990. Location probably in Lincolnshire.

The study depicts an entrance to the farm with vehicles parked at the roadside near to the out-buildings; the road leads to a wooded area beyond the buildings. The style of the work is typical of this artist and similar to other Lincolnshire landscapes acquired at various times. The artist has signed the work in black paint in his usual style in the lower rh corner. Very good condition with good colours and no damage or marking.

The painting is displayed within Sand Ingres coloured mount with single gilt lining which is also in very good condition. The pine frame with gilt inner edge is in good condition. Hardboard backing secured by points and sealed with tape. Hanging cord attached to metal lugs. No visible script.

Evening River Landscape with Resting Cattle, watercolour with highlights, attributed to Edwin Earp. c1900.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour study of a Highlands scene is in good condition with good colour and no damage. The scene depicts a group of cattle resting and watering on a river bank in the Scottish Highlands. The setting sun is reflected on the distant mountain slopes and casts a warmth over the whole scene. The style of the painting is typical of Edwin Earp and though no signature is visible I am confident that the attribution is correct. A signature may of course be obscured by the mount board which is a fairly common occurrence; as the frame has been professionally sealed I do not wish to open it unnecessarily. The painting is displayed within a period gilt mount which is in good condition except for a few light scratches in places. The heavy frame with gilt decorative moulding is in good condition with no facing damage and medium/light wear to the edges; the new backing board is secured by nails and sealed with 70mm gummed framing tape. Heavy duty brass rings and double framing wire fitted. No script verso.

Falmouth, Cornwall, viewed from Flushing village, with marine traffic, watercolour on card, titled "Falmouth from Flushing", signed G.M. Avondale, c1920. Framed.

The watercolour painting depicts Falmouth Harbour viewed from Flushing village with ships in port and passing vessels on a sultry summer's morning. A distant sailing vessel is highlighted in gouache drawing one's attention to the adjacent inner harbour; counterbalance highlights in the scrub (lower rh corner). The scene is typical of the work of G.M. Avondale, aka Garman Morris, who specialised in coastal maritime landscapes. This work is titled in the artist's hand, in brown paint, "Falmouth from Flushing" in the lower lh corner and signed G.M. Avondale, in his usual style, in the lower rh quarter adjacent to the headland scrub.

This painting is particularly alluring as the lightly overcast sky and the associated reflective hues in the sea interact and mutate as the ambient light impacting the painting changes, particularly in the morning light. A very impressive work.

The watercolour is in good condition with good subdued colours and no damage or marking. There is some marking to the inside of the glazing which casts light shadows onto the painting but this can be cleaned when opening the frame. No sign of foxing.

The painting is displayed within a gilt mount which is in good condition. The original matching gilt wooden frame is in good condition with light scuffing and marking in places. The backing board is secured by nails and sealed with thick period dark grey paper dust-sheet which is patched in places by gummed framing tape. Original framer's faded label attached at centre upper edge "B.......& Moss Carpenter & Picture Frame Maker, Painter.....F..ger...Etc. 109, C.......Road, Falmouth" (Research continuing). Customer's name, Mr EC Moss, in faded pencil script lh quarter. Old hanging wire attached to old screw-eyes.

A pleasing maritime study by this prolific early 20thC artist.

Egyptian landscape, figures on bank of River Nile with Felucca and distant buildings, watercolour and gouache on card, signed Hassan el Yashmid, c1900. Framed. 19th/20thC Orientalist School.

The Egyptian landscape study is in good condition with good colour and no damage. The scene depicts an elderly man near a palm tree on the bank of the River Nile and two other figures beneath three palm trees; a distant felucca is sailing by and white buildings can be seen on the opposite bank. The study is dominated by the solitary date palm tree in the centre but the old man standing beneath is the centre of interest  appearing to be lost in contemplation and watched by the other two figures. The painting is signed in faded brown paint  "Hassan el Yashid" in the artist's usual style in the lower rh corner.

The identity of Hassan el Yashmid is somewhat vague and his name is often referred to as a nom de plume of the artist Victor E. Pickup although this is by no means certain. There has been much discussion on this subject and further information can be found at the following Blog link : Hassan el Yashmid  Please follow the Comment links within the blog for full associated information.

The painting is displayed within the original period heavy ebonized wooden frame with a mottled gilt spacer; good sturdy condition but with scuffing in places. Backing board secured by numerous nails and sealed with heavy coarse dark khaki coloured dust-sheet which is torn diagonally; "Water Color" written in large faded handscript along lower edge. Heavy hanging chain and cord attached to old large screw-eyes.

The painting is particularly interesting as original works by this artist are rarely seen. However, lithograph prints of his works are quite common and are found worldwide - usually displayed directly below glazing with metal lugs/brackets nailed/screwed on to wooden backing boards with heavy hanging chains attached and less commonly in highly decorative period frames, either ebonized or carved oak. These lithographs appear to have been sold in the Suez Canal region (Port Said or Suez) to transiting ships and hence distributed worldwide.
