This partially abstract study of a figure in post contemplative mode is in good condition with good colour; there is however a small area (max 5mm x 5mm) of surface abrasion which has been over-painted 40mm to the rh side of the face . This patch of over-painting is not particularly noticeable and blends in well with the overall background. The painting is signed 9hs in the lower rh corner and dated 77 (1977).  The framer's label is attached top centre "Town & Country Fine Arts Melton Mowbray", reference number 288/33 in faded red ink below and a care advice label attached to lower edge. Screw-eyes and cord attached. The work is an interesting study indicative of the transcendental meditation movement of the 1960/70's and as such have categorized it within South Asian as it is certainly influenced by if not strictly originating from South Asia.

Condition/Notes : Good. The impasto gouache Impressionist study entitled Fishermen's Village Dar es Salaam is in good condition with good colour and no paint loss or damage except for a small 8mm x 3mm chip on the upper lh edge which has revealed the wooden base. This will normally be covered by the frame so of no real concern. The gouache painting is an unusual vibrant Impressionist study of an East African village filled with activity and motion capturing the vitality of this tropical region interpreted by this known Ugandan-Asian artist utilizing the typical South Asian medium of gouache. The painting is signed Naresh in the lower lh corner. Sengupta worked in various South Asian locations following his expulsion from Uganda in 1972. Verso has a label attached which appears to be an exhibition entry form detailing " Name : N. Sengupta, Medium : Gouache, Box No. 2153, Town : Kampala, Title : Fishermens Village (Dar es Salaam), ......section missing, Surname Initial : "S".." hence confirming that the date of event was pre - 1972.  Some water marking and general wear to the board but no further script. A very interesting and attractive work.

£300.00  Shipping : UK : Free Delivery. Europe : £40.00. World : £50.00.

19thC Indian School, c1890. Mixed media.

Original ebonized frame displayed within glazed oak frame.

Condition/Notes : Good. The full figure watercolour and gouache portrait of the Nizam VI of Hyderabad is in good condition. The colours to the figure are good and the scenic background is quite good with some fading and toning to the vegetation and the distant mosque. Very attractive and interesting scenic background executed in the traditional Indian style; Nizam's dress in fine detail.

The figure of the Nizam appears to float before the landscape which is typical of this period style of depiction. Particularly interesting is the remaining shadow of the Nizam's long flowing sideburns and hair in the original photograph which has been removed in this painted version reflecting his actual later real-life change to a somewhat shorter hair style. He reigned for 42 years until his death in 1911.

The painting is displayed within the original ebonized frame which is displayed within a larger glazed oak frame with carved beading surround; sturdy condition with scuffing and scratching in  places. The inner frame has wooden backing board secured by arrow points sealed with old tape and nailed to the outer oak frame. Old screw-eyes and cord attached. No visible script.

A very interesting and historical Anglo-Indian painting.

Indian Woman, portrait study, watercolour on paper, signed G.G. Kanetkar, dated 29/8/18 (1918). Indian School early 20th Century. Framed and glazed. Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour portrait study of an Indian woman is in good condition with good colour. There are, however, foxing spots to the background but they do not detract from the enjoyment of the painting. This Realist study by an Indian artist is a particularly unusual work for the early 20th Century in that it eschews the traditional Indian style and adopts the Western influence thus bringing the work into the Anglo-Indian School category. The image has connotations which are open to interpretation which thus renders the work particularly interesting. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower quarter and dated 29/8/18. The burgundy coloured mount has areas of moisture staining which have been caused by climatic variations in the Subcontinent which luckily have not affected the painting. The mount can be replaced with a conservation standard board which will protect and improve the appearance of the painting. The basic gilt frame is in reasonable condition with some scuffing and an 18mm wide chip on the top edge. The frame is backed with a cardboard sheet and sealed with gummed tape. There is water staining in places. Rings and cord attached. Overall, a very interesting and accomplished portrait study.

Near Arthurs Seat.

Title, script.

Near Arthurs Seat, Mahableshwar, April 12 1879, watercolour, signed initials H.J.W.

Watercolour on paper, signed initials, titled and dated. Dimensions : Frame : 568mm x 467mm x 16mm. Image : 345mm x 240mm. Weight : 2.500kg net. Condition : Good.

£300.00  Shipping : UK : Free Delivery. Europe : £40.00. World : £50.00. Unframed : £10.00/£15.00.

Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The painting depicts a view from the mountain track near to Arthur's Seat, Mahabaleshwar (Mahableshwar - Indian spelling) in the Western Ghats, Maharashtra; this was a Hill Station known as the summer capital of Bombay Province during British Raj. The viewing point was named after Sir Arthur Malet, ICS, who sat here and gazed at the River Savitri where he lost his wife and children in a tragic ferry accident.  The work is particularly interesting as it is titled and dated in the artist's hand along the lower edge "Near Arthurs Seat Mahableshwar April 12 1879" and signed in initials H.J.W. which are in the known style and manner of Sir Henry Joseph Wood (fl.1880-1900) but which would age him at only 10 years old (records show that at that age he was particularly proficient at painting although I cannot find any reference to him visiting India at that time). Further research will be required in this regard. Displayed within the original grey coloured mount with gilt window edges; toning, foxing and dusting to the mount. The original basic softwood  frame is sturdy but with scuffing and scratching in places and a gap to the lower rh mitre joint; two separate sheets of wooden backing board nailed in place and covered with original heavy dust-sheets. The outer sheet is torn and detached in places, secured with cellotape, and has ink inscription 165B Proudfoot in lower centre (probably owner's address in Bombay). The inner dust-sheet and backing boards have been examined but no visible script or markings except 222/13 in chalk. Any further findings will be added in due course.

Portrait of an Indian Lady, oil on board, unsigned. c1970.

20th C Indian School, oil on board. Dimensions : 450mm x 350mm. Weight : 0.520kg net. Condition : Good. Unframed.

£120.00  Shipping : UK : Free Delivery. Europe : £30.00. World : £40.00.

Condition/Notes : The oil painting is in good condition, impasto, impressionist portrait study of an Indian lady against an  intentionally sombre back-drop (as a relief to the intense light of out-doors). The painting is unfortunately unsigned. The painting was executed on imported Daler board - hence the old backing label. There is an upward bowing to the lower quarter of the board probably caused by atmospheric/humidity changes between India and UK but this can be corrected by framing. The painting has  been very lightly varnished. The back of the board has the original Daler label and the upper lh corner has been torn away. An interesting study which captures the true spirit of India.
