A steamer off Bempton Cliffs near Flamborough North Yorkshire in rough seas. Oil on card, unsigned but attributed to Aubrey Ramus, c1930. Framed. Aubrey Ramus is one of about 11 pseudonyms used by the prolific British artist Francis E. Jamieson (1895-1930) (fl.1900-30) known for his Scottish landscapes and maritime studies in both oil and watercolour.  The oil on card maritime landscape study is in good condition with good colours and no damage or marking. The scene depicts a steamer against a wind scattered sky and gulls flying around the cliffs. There is no sign of a signature and the frame has been opened to confirm this; no script verso.  The attribution is based on the style and subject of the painting, in particular the sky and colours of rocks and seas with a smoking stack on the distant ship which can be seen in several of his maritime works. The popularity of "Jamieson" remains strong today and his paintings are in great demand.

Detail.

Graphite sketch on the paper support verso. They are prep drawings for his watercolour study titled Windsor Castle.

Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with no damage and in his characteristically subdued colours. The painting depicts three fishing smacks at moorings with smoke rising from the stoves and figures on deck in what is thought to be Tobermory Harbour with the old pier to the rh side; the scene is typical of this artist's work which often portrays coastal scenes.  The frame has been opened to investigate the script - turns out to be R.S.W. below the signature and not a date. This is interesting as it confirms that the painting was not completed before 1891 the date of his election to the R.S.W. and probably indicates that the painting was completed that year or soon after. It is known that he was living in Scotland at this time. There is also an interesting graphite sketch on the paper support verso. Further examination of the above sketches indicates that they are prep drawings for his watercolour study titled Windsor Castle which was sold at auction 25.06.2014 at Maynards Auction House, Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

TSS Statendam, Holland America Line, signed D.T. Gray, oil on board, c1960.

Faint signature below stern.

Detail.

Frame verso.

The oil painting on board depicts a retrospective depiction of the TSS Statendam (II), of the Holland America Line, built in 1917 by Harland & Wolff Belfast. She never actually sailed for HAL as she was requisitioned by the British Government during WW1 and was torpedoed and sunk in 1918 when named SS Justicia. She was the second of four ships named Statendam commissioned by HAL. This is very similar to the classic oil painting of Statendam (II) 1917 in both aspect and location and may well be based on that painting. The oil painting is in good condition with vibrant colours and captures the surge of the river as she departs Rotterdam. The painting is displayed within a basic green mount with a handwritten title below "Statendam Holland America Line". The painting is faintly signed in the lower rh quarter below the stern of the ship as DT Gray a known South African 20th Century artist who mostly paints South African landscapes.

Similar studies of this bridge have been painted by Elias Bancroft, A.H. Morgan and Lionel Townsend Crawshaw in the early 1900's but this is unusual in depicting the western side of the bridge looking north.
