In the Paddy Fields in Malaya, watercolour on paper, signed Adie (Edith Helena Adie), c1920. Original frame.
Condition/Notes : Good/Very good. The watercolour on paper study of a Malayan paddy field at sunset is in good to very good condition with good colours and no damage or marking; there is slight acid leak to the mount edges in places and a few very light foxing spots adjacent to the upper rh edge. The study depicts two workers in the field at the end of the day with a colourful sunset casting pleasing tones across the paddy fields and reflecting in the standing water. There is a sense of tropical tranquility to the scene which radiates beyond the painting and captures the attention of the viewer. The study is signed Adie in the lower lh corner.
Displayed within the original dark brown mount which is in good condition except for toning to the window edges and slight acid burn to the adjacent painting edge in a few places; there is some light coloured residue in places on the mount which appears to be on the inside of the glazing. Replacing the mount with a modern conservation standard mount will be of benefit.
The original dark brown gloss veneer frame is in good sturdy condition with light scuffing to the face and a 35mm scratch to the top lh corner corner of the frame verso. Acid board backing secured by rusty nails sealed with gummed framing tape. Inscribed verso upper centre to dust-sheet, in faded ink, with title "In the Paddy Fields" and below in capital letters "Edith Helena Adie". Old screw-eyes and wire attached. No other script visible. There may be other script inside but as the frame is very well sealed have not opened for further examination.
An interesting and very pleasing study by this listed 19th/early 20thC British artist particularly well-known for her garden studies.

Indian Woman, portrait study, watercolour on paper, signed G.G. Kanetkar, dated 29/8/18 (1918). Indian School early 20th Century. Framed and glazed.
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour portrait study of an Indian woman is in good condition with good colour. There are, however, foxing spots to the background but they do not detract from the enjoyment of the painting. This Realist study by an Indian artist is a particularly unusual work for the early 20th Century in that it eschews the traditional Indian style and adopts the Western influence thus bringing the work into the Anglo-Indian School category. The image has connotations which are open to interpretation which thus renders the work particularly interesting. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower quarter and dated 29/8/18. The burgundy coloured mount has areas of moisture staining which have been caused by climatic variations in the Subcontinent which luckily have not affected the painting. The mount can be replaced with a conservation standard board which will protect and improve the appearance of the painting. The basic gilt frame is in reasonable condition with some scuffing and an 18mm wide chip on the top edge. The frame is backed with a cardboard sheet and sealed with gummed tape. There is water staining in places. Rings and cord attached. Overall, a very interesting and accomplished portrait study.

1. Fishing boats crossing Bosphorus. The watercolour on paper study depicts fishing boats crossing the Bosphorus towards the European shore with the Istanbul skyline dominating the scene. The painting is in good condition with good colour, no damage and very slight marking in places with a dusting to the edges. The artist's signature is lightly painted in the lower lh corner. The work is displayed directly below the glazing, which was normal practice at that time, within a mottled antique style glazed wooden frame which is in good sturdy condition. Plywood backing board secured by old panel pins, sealed with old dry backing paper; remnants of a Boots Framing Department label attached to lower edge. Reference number 1952/1/600 in pencil visible below lower paper seal. Old brass rings and cord attached with small label attached to rh ring "1952/1 600" in pencil. Backing does not appear to have been disturbed since framing.
2. Ferry boat crossing with three passengers. The watercolour on paper study depicts a hand-rowed ferry boat crossing Bosphorus towards landing with many fishing boats and ferries along the city shore. The painting is in good condition with good colour and no damage; light dusting to edges. The artist's signature L. Law is lightly painted in the lower rh corner. The painting is likewise displayed directly beneath the glass in a matching frame which is also in good sturdy condition with no damage or marking. Plywood backing board similarly attached and sealed. Reference number 1952/2/600 in pencil visible below peeling brown paper seal upper lh corner of frame. Same light rings and cord attached; label string attached to ring but small label missing.
The two watercolour studies make a pleasing pair capturing the turn of the century Istanbul waterfront which was a very popular destination for European tourists at that time. Many artists worked in the city to provide such paintings for the wealthy visitors. See more details and images in Orientalist .

Landscape with Lake, Farmhouse and Figures, watercolour on paper, faintly inscribed/signed. Attributed to Sophy S. Warren, c1880. Framed but unglazed.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper study of a landscape with a lake, farmhouse and figures is in quite good condition but with some foxing spots in places (sky, distant hills and lake). The location of the study is fairly typical of the work of Sophy S. Warren, especially relating to the proximity of water, the style of the trees, isolation and the reeds along the water's edge. Several of her listed works are unsigned but inscribed, others signed with monogram; this work being faintly inscribed along the lower edge concealed by the mount and partly missing due to damage. The inscription is worth further research but todate has not revealed any positive result (see images below which include details of the work unframed). The painting is displayed within a gilt mount which is in fair condition. The decorative gilt frame is in fair condition with losses to the moulding in the upper rh corner. Two strips of plywood are nailed in place as backing and the original framer's label is attached top centre but has been torn along the top edge "R. & W. Lizard Head, Kynance, Cornwall, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed W. Mitchell (William Mitchell c1806-c1900). Framed and glazed. c1880.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour with gouache highlights study on paper is probably pasted to board (not certain as the back of the frame is well sealed). The condition is good with strong colours and very little foxing. There is no sign of moisture ingress. The maritime scene depicts Lizard Head as viewed from Kynance Cove in Cornwall on a typical SW blustery day with hints of the afternoon sun showing in the passing clouds and gulls riding the wind; passing squall on the horizon.
This artist is well known for his maritime scenes and this painting is typical of his work.
The painting is signed in the lower rh corner.
The painting is displayed beneath an old sunned mount board which has dusting in places and toning to the window edges.
The gilt wooden frame appears to be original and is in sound condition although heavily chipped and worn around the edges. The back of the frame is sealed with brown kraft paper and gummed tape which has been pierced by the old panel pins securing the backing board. There is staining to the backing paper. The title of the painting is typed on a label which states "Lizard Head, Kynance Cornwall". The framer's label is attached centre top edge and states "Irvine's Art & Gift Shop. Ann Street, Belfast". Below is part of a label which has been covered by the gummed tape revealing "Cornwall". "Compton" is handwritten in pencil in the centre of the board and above is written in chalk "1236-14". This backing appears to be original and has not been opened. 2 screw-eyes and cord are attached.

Loughborough Town Centre, watercolour, pen and ink on paper, titled, signed and dated Loughborough, L. Allsop 1940. (fl.1930-1950).
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour, pen and ink on paper study of Loughborough Town Centre in 1940 is in good condition with good colour - there is, however, a light surface crease to the rh upper side of the telegraph pole in centre but this does not detract from the scene. The study is very interesting from an historical point as most of the features can be seen today with little change apart from the current pedestrianization of the road and extension of the market to the foreground and beyond; the clock remains in the same location. There is some interesting over-writing on the shop signs. The painting is titled and signed in the lower rh corner - interestingly, the original title was written as Nottingham in the same ink as the signature and date 1940, then over-written in graphite as Loughborough (in the same hand). Presumably confusion by the artist. The work is displayed in an off-white mount which is in fair condition with dusting and toning to edges; the plain gilt frame is sturdy with wear to edges and a 35mm long loss to the upper rh edge. Hardboard backing nailed and sealed with gummed tape; framer's handwritten note in pencil upper edge. Screw-eyes attached. Overall, an interesting work of historical interest.

Watercolour on fine/medium art paper in good condition with good strong colours and no damage or marking. There are some very light foxing marks in the border surrounding the actual painting but these can be concealed by adding a mount board beneath the glazing.
The woman is posing for the artist and is surrounded by jungle and vegetation including a spectacular date palm dominating the study. The vegetation clearance is related to water hyacinth production which is widely used in the region for agricultural fertilizer.
The work is signed in black paint in the lower lh corner in the artist's usual style.
The painting is displayed directly beneath the glazing of the pine frame which is in good condition. Backing board secured by nails and sealed with Kraft paper dust sheet. The framer's ink stamp is in the lower centre quarter "Cooper's (A.C. Cooper Prop) The Picture Shop.....".

Marguerite's Vision, watercolour on paper, 19th Century Continental School, unsigned. c1850. Framed and glazed.
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper painting is in good condition with good colour. There is no sign of foxing or moisture but there is a small 1mm spot of surface abrasion to the rh side of the walking-stick but it does not detract from the painting. There are also a few small areas of craqueleur on the vertical fireplace structures to the lh edge of the painting which appear to have stabilized and so are not of concern. The image is an interesting study of a woman's holy vision of the Divine Child in an interior location. A descriptive label is attached verso which reads "Marguerite is recovering from a severe illness which has left a deformity. She is grieving over her troubles and has a vision of the Divine Child holding up a wing on which is pictured our Lord dying. Marguerite then feels that her sorrows are but a faint image of His and is ever after reconciled to them". The painting appears to be an illustration for a narrative the title of which is currently unknown. The outline graphite drawing of the Divine Child can be clearly seen within the halo which extends to the outer regions where a stippling effect merges into the gloominess of the room; an effective technique to depict a difficult image. The work is unfortunately unsigned but evidently of Continental origin and is displayed within a pale white mount which has foxing spots in places and darkly toned window edges. The original gilt moulded frame is darkened and has scuffing in places but is sturdy with a wooden backing board secured by old nails and dry gummed tape. Remnants of the original charcoal coloured backing paper are still attached in places and the descriptive label with faded black ink handscript, as described previously, is attached to the upper centre. Rings and old cord attached. An interesting 19th Century iconic study which will benefit from identification of the accompanying narrative.

The painting is in very good condition with good colours and no damage or losses. The scene depicts a blossoming tree overhanging the slowly flowing river in the evening of an English Spring day. The study imparts a sense of solitude and peacefulness which pervades every aspect of the scene and entices the viewer to enjoy the colour and ambiance.
The painting is displayed within a double mount board array, white under cream coloured, which pleasingly presents the painting at its best.
The subdued gilt and olive coloured frame is in good condition with very light scuffing in places. Hardboard backing board secured with arrow-head points and sealed with framing tape. Painted during the artist's period of residence on the Trobriand Islands between 1922 and 1925 this work is one of a series of studies capturing the landscape and people of New Guinea.
The painting is signed in paint Ellis Silas in the lower rh corner in the artist's usual style. The card support is also inscribed verso Ellis Silas F.S.A. R.G.S., but this can only be viewed on opening the frame.

Caermarvon, moorland landscape, watercolour with gouache highlights on paper, framed and glazed, signed Alfred Grahame c1920.
Condition/Notes : The painting is in very good condition with strong colours. The heather in the foreground is highlighted in gouache. The painting depicts a moorland scene looking towards a distant peak which is typical of the works of this artist. His signature is in the lower rh corner.
The painting is mounted beneath a complementary double washline mount board; toning to the cut edges of the mount window. Otherwise the mount is in good condition with slight toning and dusting to edges.
The standard machine decorated wooden frame is sturdy and the glazing clear. Back of frame has been recovered and sealed with 50mm self-adhesive framing tape which is peeling slightly at the edges. The title Caermarvon c1888 Alfred Grahame was written on the remnants of the old dust-sheet and has been written upper rh quarter with the auction house label "98 31OCT 2009", serial number and Framer's label below "J. Pratt & Sons Derby". Screw-eyes and hanging cord attached.
An interesting 19thC landscape study very similar in style to the work of D.H. Pinder who is known to have signed some of his work with the alias Ben Graham. The scene does look typical of a Dartmoor study and very similar to some of Pinder's work. The significance of Caermarvon, presumably meaning Caernarvon, is uncertain although there are similar moorland scenes in that region.

Moroccan street scene with camel and figures, watercolour on paper pasted to acid board with a 3-5mm border around the painting. Signed Giovanni Barbaro in the lower rh corner. c1900. Unframed.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper is in quite good condition; slight age related toning to colour overall and dusting along lower edge probably caused by previous frame edge which would be laid directly to painting surface. Some speckled marking to upper rh quarter edge probably caused by condensation from previous glazing which would have been laid directly to painting as was the practice of the period (see images). Few very small paint losses along mid-lh edge probably caused by frame contact.
The study is typical of the Arabian works of the artist and is probably located in Morocco. No identifying script verso although this has been pasted to board and thus not now visible. The dimensions are typical of Barbaro and the location has been depicted in other similar works.

Mousehole Harbour with fishing boats, watercolour on paper, signed T.H. Victor. c1950 Framed.
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour study of Mousehole Harbour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking; there is a water-stain to the lower rh corner in the margin of the paper card base - this could be easily covered by another mount board. The study is one of a series of similar studies around Mousehole Harbour which the artist created over the years reflecting small changes in the view. The painting is signed TH Victor in his usual style in the lower rh corner and titled Mousehole in the lower lh corner. A very pleasing image of this picturesque Cornish fishing port with the hill overlooking the harbour. The image is set within a pencil-lined rectangle drawn on the paper base and surrounded by another blue lined rectangle leaving a 10mm margin. The paper base is displayed directly below the glazing within the cream painted pine wood frame; card backing board secured by points and sealed with gummed tape which is partly detached in places. Boots Picture Framing Department label attached above lower edge centre with pencil ref nrs 4715 1118 and dated 21 SEP 1962. Rings and cord attached.
A pleasing painting by this very popular listed Cornish artist Thomas Herbert Victor (1894-1980).

Near Arthur's Seat, Mahabaleshwar, Western Ghats, India, April 12 1879, watercolour on paper, signed initials H.J.W. Original frame.
Imperial : Frame : 22-1/2" x 18-1/2" 3/4". Image : 13-1/2" x 9-1/2".
Condition/Notes : Good. The watercolour on paper is in good condition with good colour and no damage or marking. The painting depicts a view from the mountain track near to Arthur's Seat, Mahabaleshwar (Mahableshwar - Indian spelling) in the Western Ghats, Maharashtra; this was a Hill Station known as the summer capital of Bombay Province during British Raj. The viewing point was named after Sir Arthur Malet, ICS, who sat here and gazed at the River Savitri where he lost his wife and children in a tragic ferry accident. The work is particularly interesting as it is titled and dated in the artist's hand along the lower edge "Near Arthurs Seat Mahableshwar April 12 1879" and signed in initials H.J.W. which are in the known style and manner of Sir Henry Joseph Wood (fl.1880-1900) but which would age him at only 10 years old (records show that at that age he was particularly proficient at painting although I cannot find any reference to him visiting India at that time). Further research will be required in this regard.
Displayed within the original grey coloured mount with gilt window edges; toning, foxing and dusting to the mount. The original basic softwood frame is sturdy but with scuffing and scratching in places and a gap to the lower rh mitre joint; two separate sheets of wooden backing board nailed in place and covered with original heavy dust-sheets. The outer sheet is torn and detached in places, secured with cellotape, and has ink inscription 165B Proudfoot in lower centre (probably owner's address in Bombay). The inner dust-sheet and backing boards have been examined but no visible script or markings except 222/13 in chalk. Any further findings will be added in due course.
An interesting and historical painting worthy of further research.
