Portrait of an Afghan citizen, watercolour on paper, signed Ghaussudin, Kabul, 1966. Afghan 20th C School. Framed in original wooden frame.
Dimensions : Frame : 612mm x 382mm x 50mm. Image : 550mm x 420mm.
Condition/Notes : Quite good. The watercolour on paper painting is in good condition with strong colours. There is a small area of damage as "an inverted L 22mm x 15mm tear" to the lh edge of the upper head covering which has been repaired and is not noticeable in normal viewing. The artist has skillfully captured the unique characteristics of this Afghan senior which translates into a study filled with contemplation and character set against the impending upheaval of Afghan society in 1966. Several works by this artist are recorded. The basic original wooden frame is in solid condition but with scratching and scuffing. The painting is pinned in position by small nails and backed with a sheet of cardboard which is similarly fixed. The painting would benefit from reframing and glazing.

Hello, I just came across the photograph of the watercolor sketch of the Steam Drifter "Kessingland" LT 210, when I was researching steam drifter models & photographs. I painted this one as a retirement present for AFB (Alex) Moon, Preventive Officer, HMCustoms & Excise, when we were both serving at Harwich. I took early retirement in 1998, & relocated to a small village in Brittany, France, in 2011. I have 3 of my watercolors hanging in our 300 year old cottage. Steam Drifters "Waveney" & "Ambitious", & a Revenue Cutter beating out of Harwich Harbour. I wonder how much the "Kessingland" picture sold for ? No doubt Alex Moon has passed away. Hey what ex. Hi Roger

I am in the midst of a lockdown clear out of our Orientalist style studio room.

Some while ago I bought a framed print(?) of a souk doorway and street on Ebay for £5. The picture is signed Hassan el Yashmid.

On receipt I discovered that the image had been gummed to coarse brown cardboard of the sort I can remember from childhood in the early 1960's.

Sadly I also discovered that the seller had been a little economic with the truth and not mentioned that the back must have got damp at some stage and this has stained and wrinkled the image surface. This is a real shame as the image has a lot of charm about it and the frame is really rather good with its Ikat-like shapes and clearly a vintage item.

Had the picture cost me more money I would have kicked up a fuss. But given the circumstances I didn't and put it into storage ready for the refurbishment of the studio room.

Fast forward and I am thinking whether the print can somehow be salvaged. Perhaps putting it under glass would help flatten the surface.

I saw the signature and punched that into Google and Lo and Behold I found your website!

I've attached some photos for your inspection. I think it is a print as following your comment to another viewer about using a magnifying glass I can see a kind of 'squared weave' to the image.

Hello Roger,

Thank you so very much for your reply yesterday and also this morning's message.

I really appreciate your enthusiasm that I should persevere with the print being re-mounted in its frame though I think you may not have picked up on the fact that the damp damage was not just confined to the rough cardboard backing. It had soaked through right to the image on the front and both stained and bubbled it.

I'm resending the relevant photo I buzzed over yesterday which shows this.

However, once they're allowed to open again I will take it to our local framers and see what they advise. As I said putting some glass in will undoubtedly help flatten this area and others or at least as much as it ever will.

Since our 'conversation' yesterday I have in fact made a discovery which I think is likely to be of interest to you .........I have another El Yashmid picture!

And, one whose image I haven't come across on any of the on-line image feeds.

The framed picture was another Ebay find and cost me all of £17. It arrived pretty grubby and after cleaning up I discovered it had a terribly "treacley" varnish which I stripped back.

It was not until I had read your blog about the artist and the photos that I went back to inspect my picture more closely and discovered a very tiny signature on the image. It's just to the right of the little prickly pear - see Photo 2, just above the mount.

Finally, I'd be very pleased to have my "story" added to your blog and perhaps you might like to include this latest discovery too?

Hassan el Yashmid - Victor E Pickup

Following from this morning's post, here is an interesting description of a lithograph which was on sale last year of the original watercolour by Victor E. Pickup which detailed various links to Yashmid and thence on to Barbaro:

Here is an Absolutely Beautiful Vintage Circa 1924 Circular Color Halftone Lithograph Egyptian scene titled “The Water Seller”, by the artist ‘Victor E. Pickup’ (AKA Hassan El Yashmid, fl. 1900-1930) whose printed signature appears lower right in the image along with the date ‘1923’, and whose name via research appears to be the Anglicized pseudonym name of ‘Hassan El Yashmid [or sometimes Yasmid]’, and may be another pseudonym for the English artist Arthur Dudley whose other possible pseudonym may be Giovanni Barbaro, which is strange, but was not uncommon for some artists to have multiple pseudonyms back in the day (who knows???). ‘Copyright the British Art Company Ltd.’, as appears printed very tiny is a semi-circle in the upper middle just above the image. The title appears printed lower middle in the outer margin area. The Print is on a nice heavy-weight ivory wove paper stock that features a nice square blind-embossed plate mark around the image for decorative purposes. The Print is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with Absolutely No Color Fade! Gorgeous rich color & tones. This Print has been tucked away in our archive amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition—Simply beautiful! The sheet size with wide margins is 22-1/2” x 17-7/16”, Image size is 12” in diameter, the Blind-embossed plate mark is 15” x 14” (doesn’t show up in photo). No Tears! No creasing at all in the image area! Extremely minimal (only a handful) of tiny faint foxing specks here & there on the sheet which aren’t even really noticeable and aren’t even worth mentioning. Extremely minimal slight small crescent-creases here & there in the outer margin areas, some creases along a few edges and some dog-ear creasing in the outer margin corners—all of which are basically negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Slight normal toning of the stock from age. Some light topical soiling from age (lightly grubby) in the upper outer margin area from being handled and from being in a drawer this whole time amongst other lithos & prints. There are eight tiny pin-holes here & there in all four outer margin corner areas, which I believe may have been used for the lithographic registration pin-holes when the piece was originally printed (not sure???)—also negligible. This gorgeous vintage print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.

Two more framed prints of Hassan el Yashmid's paintings titled On The Tigris Nr. Kurna and On The Nile Nr. Kantara have surfaced in Cardiff. They are in good condition with good frames and title plates. Interesting to note that these Yashmid prints always appear in the same pairs. This pair is quite uncommon.

Interesting to note that a pair of Hassan el Yashmid prints entitled "Pair of Arabian City study prints After Giovanni Barbaro", estimated at Euro 100-150, are being offered by Sheppard's Irish Auction House on 9th July at 1030. (Lot 628). The listing states that Giovanni Barbaro's Orientalist works were signed Hassam el Yashmid.

Will be interesting to see the results.

Failed to reach the reserve (Euro100.-).
